My New Favorite Author

One of the most interesting authors I have stumbled upon in years. I will forge through everyone of his books. I had to take a break from Tracy Kidder's books after reading this one because it gave me so much food for thought. I have not finished digesting his revelations of Paul Farmer. Tracy Kidder finds people that are worth reading about; those with dedication, drive, and the energy to follow through a personal dream. I am hoping to find a book of this caliber about a woman. I don't know if Kidder has written one, but I'm off for the hunt!

Strange Turn

I was interested in the clinic and the troubles abroad, but the romance didn't interest me at all. It felt like halfway through the book we jumped to another person, a rich girl living her own life, and I just couldn't care less. I get that the point is to illustrate the full extent of the doctor's sacrifice - at the expense of his own personal life and love life - but this strange turn was lackluster. After what felt like 80 pages with no hope of release, I put down the book.

The story was good, but Dr Farmer did not engage me. He irritated me.Another socialist who puts down the people and countries which have prospered, but will accept every last penny they can give him. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!

Ignite Your Passion for God (Bible Study)

As a pastor, I normally do not use Bible Study books for my weekly Bible Study. We simply go straight from the Bible. But this short Bible study by Kay Arthur, Ignite Your Passion for God, caught my attention.

After reading through the book, I am going to use it during my Bible Study, but I am not certain how I will complete it within 40 minutes. Some chapters have a great deal of insight and depth to them, so I am allowing about 8 weeks to complete this study. There are “Insight” notes within the chapters which help guide the user in understanding the passage which is being discussed.

This Bible Study is designed in such a manner that you are not required to do the work or homework in advance. As we look at drawing closer to God, we will use this book and see how this impacts the people of the church.

There are 6 chapters in the book, which examines what influences or even takes away from our passion for God:

Idolatry
God’s Word
Prayer
Worship
Sharing the Gospel
Suffering

This is a very good basic study guide which I would highly recommend.

A Wonderful Study

What I Loved: I know several women who use the Precepts studies and enjoy them. This was my first time picking up one and I must say that I really enjoyed it. Part of this study style involves marking certain words in your Bible to help you better understand the passage. This was easy to do since she walks you through it.
The idea behind the 40 minute, no-homework, study is to be able to able to gather with friends during your lunch break or during a Sunday School session and work through the entire week’s session together. It’s shorter than the normal Precepts but still a well rounded study.
I approached the study alone but was still able to glean the benefits. So I think those willing to study alone will enjoy it as well as those who have a study group.

Ignite Your Passion for God pulled various passages from the Old and New Testament to help the reader understand the importance of honoring God with all of yourself. The study focuses on identifying and removing idols, honoring God, sharing Christ, the importance of studying God’s word and prayer, what proper worship looks like as described in the Scriptures, and suffering for Christ.
Every lesson is pulled directly from Scripture and can be trusted to encourage, rebuke, and direct the reader.

Rating and Recommendation: I think it’s a great study guide and give it 5-stars. I recommend the Precepts study for anyone looking to dig deeper into the Word. I really enjoyed digging into this particular theme and can recommend this one and others in the series.

Well done group study

If you want a well designed bible study book with no prep work and no homework, I recommend this book. My favorite feature about this book is the bible verses are printed in the margins. No excuses for not taking time to read a passage. Everyone is reading the same translation. You are actually encouraged to underline, circle, and makes notes on the text.

This book could be done as an individual study, but I agree with the authors that it would be best in a group setting. Each week has discussion questions to help leaders facilitate conversation. The book even included a brief guide to help you if you were the facilitator. Plus, the topic is relevant to everyone. Overall, I am pleased, especially from a facilitator’s perspective.

A Life-changing way of thinking!

I just couldn't put this book down and re-read many statements since I first read it. This was my 'all-time' best book I've read and had a huge influence on personal ways of thinking as well as a Pastor in ministry. What a great way to look at life from a Bible based perspective.

The organization can be confusing, but Gilbert provides contextual essays for individual chapters, which are arranged primarily geographically, with the deepest coverage on Oceania, Japan, and Europe/America. The illustrations, ranging from crude line drawings to full-color photos, are perhaps the most fascinating element in the book. Unlike some books on tattooing, the images do not emphasize the salacious. The book I would have written!

As a sociologist with strong anthropological interests turned tattoo apprentice, this is exactly the book I was looking for! Much of the tattoo world only goes back a century for its history, then alludes to ancient cultures. Just by flipping through this book upon arrival I can see that this is not the case with this book.

If there was ever a college class on the history of tattoos, this should be one of the required texts. The only thing that could make this better is if the book was actually divided into a series focusing on each area/timeframe and included more information. *hint hint*

Lots of history, a little dull.

You know, I guess I was just looking for a little more current history. Most of what you'll find in this book deals with ancient tribal and oriental histories. It's kind of like that college history class we all took dealing with ancient civilizations. Tough to find relationships to today's world (for me at least). Not a knock on the book itself, it is what it is, just my $.02.

Great Art Historical Survey of Tattoo

I had been struggling to find a book which would provide both images of the beauty of historical tattooing but also give the insights and historical context for the art. This book is amazing. Gilbert uses many historical excerpts from early explorers and early tattoo artists which make for an informative and interesting read. I highly, highly recommend this book.

Dumbest thing I ever read

The only reasons I purchased this book was because the one and two stars told me nothing. Oh bad grammar, that's all? But you have nothing to say on the plot? Then there's no problem, I can over look that. The second reason was because I read the sample of the second book and was glad that it was written in one of the character's point of views. I couldn't get past the first chapter with this one. But decided to suck it up since the writing somewhat improved by the second book.

I don't think I'll be reading the second book though.

Anyways let me just talk about this one. It was awful! God awful! Aside from most sentences not making any kind of sense, the sex the boring, the characters were boring and had no real personality, the writing as a whole sucked. And it was just too overly cliche.

I have read so many billionaire romance books that they all just have the same set ups. Poor/making a decent living kind of girl gets caught up with rich billionaire and she is different from the rest because she doesn't want his money and she is sassy and oh my god he just loves it because it's a challenge and all when it isn't.

The minute I got to the part about their agreement, I had to take a break from this. Girl accepts agreement to be a f buddy to billionaire for so and so amount of time and with it comes a top of the line new place to live, wardrobe, doctor appointment to get on pills because you know he is not going to use a condom. Same with all of these stories, girl go on the pill! You take care of your end of protection because I don't want to wear a condom. And what's this? A full body wax to match his preferences?

Ridiculous. Freaking ridiculous.

And lets go have dinner to give the story some kind of substance even though we know what the main goal of the evening is to just screw each other.

Just ugh. No. And I couldn't believe how she went around telling everyone about the deal she accepted. I mean I guess she would have to if she was not going to be living at home, but I don't know I just think it was dumb and she didn't have a personality when it came to that situation either. It was just "I'm now screwing this guy for money but we'll talk later."

And I think by chapter ten, apparently she was in like with him. But I honestly didn't feel the chemistry at all throughout the book.

I liked the little twist about him being in an arranged marriage, but oh shock what's this? Lana is knocked up?

Yeah no, I'm done with the book. Babies ruin the story and I don't think she needed to be knocked up to make things more twist like, complicated or whatever. This was a total time waster. Though I think I only spent two and a half hours on the book. I skipped a lot and returned it for a refund.

Total time waster indeed.

sexy, erotic tale full of intrigue that will take you on a whirlwind ride into the powerful world of the insanely rich

I’ve long since sworn off reading any books with billionaire, millionaire, or any other type of “aire” in the title but it was something about this particular book that caught my eye. To be honest, I was fully expecting this to be a FSOG knock-off and while there were some similarities in the beginning, this book quickly took on a life of it’s own.

The writing style took some getting used to as I’m not a fan of third person, present tense narratives.(been known to totally ditch a book because of it) However, the more I read ‘The Billionaire Banker’, the more engrossed I became in the story and it’s progression and I really, REALLY ended up enjoying the book.

The story was well-written and the plot truly unique in this age of billionaire meets naive virgin, they have kinky sex, fall in love and well, you know the drill. With ‘The Billionaire Banker’, Carre managed to turn what could have been your usual, predictable billionaire story into a deliciously erotic and intriguing read, full of twists and turns on every page. Kudos to you Ms. Carre.

The characters were absolutely addictive. Fairly dynamic with a unique richness all their own. When I’m left wondering about even the supporting characters and asking myself “What’s their story?” I know that the author has done a fantastic job in thoroughly developing them.

while I liked Lana and admired her determination…I found her naiveté astounding. I loved her determination and her honesty…especially her honesty which I found to be very refreshing. I also loved the relationship that she had with her family, friends and the parents of her friends. They may have been brought up on the wrong side of the tracks but they had what mattered most, love, loyalty and respect.

Blake on the other hand was mysterious but likable. I was drawn to him immediately. The unemotional, aloof way in which Blake was characterized, along with the sense of entitlement held by the other characters of his social class lent an air of realness and authenticity to the character that we don’t normally see in a genre that is over-saturated with billionaire/virgin story lines. The author, with her descriptive words and vivid imagery was able to paint a picture in which the reader felt as if they were right there in the midst of the chaos as it was happening. Blake’s turmoil and inner struggle was palpable. Torn between his unexpected feelings for Lana and his loyalty to his family.. I could actually feel his conflict and confusion. Carre allowed us to witness Blake’s transition from a somewhat aloof (well for lack of a better word) azz to someone who not only comes to care about Lana but also is able to view commoners as people and not pawns.

Oooohhhh, the connection between Lana and Blake. *fans self* The connection between the two was explosive. They were literally drawn to one another like a drug addict looking for their next fix. They absolutely could not get enough. The sex was smoking hot…. simple, but hot! The scenes were well written and not too over the top, it’s depiction, exactly what one would expect in this type of arrangement.

The only negative I have concerning this story is the fact that there is a cliff hanger which I absolutely loathe. I’m lucky that I wasn’t aware of that fact before I started reading because quite honestly, I most likely wouldn’t have bothered with the book to begin with. Yes,I’m well aware of the fact that I would’ve missed out on an awesome tale because of it. Luckily, It seems as if I chose the right time to read it because the sequel was out the day after I finished which worked out rather well if I do say so myself.

Overall, The Billionaire Banker is a must read novel. If you are looking for a sexy, erotic tale full of intrigue that will take you on a whirlwind ride into the powerful world of the insanely rich, RUN, do not walk, and pick up ‘The Billionaire Banker ASAP.

Evil has come knocking on her door,literally forcing her to leave. Will she survive her broken heart or is her future as bleak as she imagines?

I enjoyed the way the author developed Blake from being so cold and ruthless to the beginnings of a softer emotional side. Lana also spread her wings from a frightened, naive and vulnerable girl to a woman aware of her sensuality and strength. Although with this only being book one there was no happily ever after, I felt hope that the second book would deliver the necessary ending. I certainly hope it is a happily ever after.

Well developed characters interlaced with a well thought out plot to bring this novel to life on each and every page. With vivid descriptions of the scenery, the colorful supporting characters' lives and the differences between Blake and Lana's upbringing, I felt as if I was there on the pages as well. Excellent book. All I can say is: Where is book two???!!

I would recommend this book to all romance readers.

Turning Uncertainty into Risk

This concise and somewhat polemical book is successful effort to argue for a relatively large role for state intervention in fostering economic growth. Mazzucato points to the substantial role of state-led interventions in the development of important techologies. Her analysis goes well beyond the usual discussion of DARPA and the Internet to discuss a broad array of important technologies fostered by the state, particularly the US Federal government. Who knew, for example, that Apple had an SBIR grant in its early years or that Google's original algorithm development was assisted by an NSF grant. Mazzucato lays out the many ways in which Federal and sometimes US state patronage contributed substantially to the development of important, novel technologies. A key point is that these successful efforts go well beyond routine R&D support, tax credits, and educational efforts to active participation at many levels to translating research into successful products. Mazzucato is quite critical, and successfully so, of conventional views of the roles of venture capital and our financial system in general. She captures this quite nicely by describing the role of the state as dealing with Frank Knight's famous concept of uncertainty - only the state can make the sustained investments and create the market environment for novel technologies - in the essentially unpredictable world of science and technology. Only when uncertainty has been transformed into calculable Knightian risk will conventional market mechanisms assist the development of new technologies.

This is very well done but will be familiar to almost anyone with a modest knowledge of the history of technology development in the 20th century. A more novel and very interesting aspect of Mazzucato's argument is her sustained criticism of venture capital and general corporate finance policies in relation to technological innovations. This is an effective critique discussing the general theme of public risk and private profits. She also makes a credible argument that the public should get a better return for its tax supported investments in novel technologies, something that could expand the development of new technologies and foster growth.

Minor defects of this book are over-reliance on technical language common among economists and a couple of unclear arguments related to some of the more technical aspects of economics, notably the critique of conventional growth theory. Strongly recommended.

Interesting analysis on how the state can contribute to long term economic growth especially through investment in research. I found it in line with some of the seminal contributions of Ken Arrow, Dick Nelson, and Keith Pavitt, among the others. However, I would have expected a deeper exploration of the conditions and the rules that can increase productivity and positive externalities of public investment. Moreover, as shown by the cases of Silicon Valley and Cambridge Ma., the US public research system has properties that other national systems of innovation were not able to replicate. So, I would have expected more emphasis on the interplay between competitive, mission oriented, public investment and vibrant market driven innovation dynamics. A good reading in any case. The state as an essential partner in innovation

This well researched book proves that most important innovations are based on financing from government. Apple's iPods, iPhones and iPads are presented as one of the examples. The author describes in detail how the government has financed all essential technological innovations used. The author recognizes the genius of Steve Jobs by visualizing an attractive product that people would buy, selecting technologies, and putting them together in a compact beautiful package.

At first sight this appears the way it should be. The government finances technological breakthroughs that are picked up by business. The problem she sees is financing by the government. Governments are pressured to reduce costs and furthermore are accused to be highly inefficient in everything they do. She describes how for example the governments the US, Germany and Denmark invest heavily and effectively in research and development. They act as entrepreneurs taking the highest risks.

She shows that businesses, in the medical electronic and other fields have radically reduced their funding of the more longer term research and development on which breakthroughs depend. Business and venture capitalists are short term orientated. When "innovative" companies are hugely profitable they buy back shares and/or raise dividends but do not invest it in the longer-term future. She presents a lot of statistics to prove this point.

She considers that it is very important for the people at large to recognize the essential role government plays as the fundamental force in innovation. This role goes beyond developing new knowledge. The state in many cases also has to finance the development of a new technology to the point where it is applied and achieve critical mass. The governments is involved in the supply side but in important cases also on the demand side. The government chooses, has to choose, the winners.

The United States is by far the most effective and largest investor in innovation. Many people believe that the free market and entrepreneurs are the driving force in innovation. She refers to this as a "myth" presenting many examples.

Companies in general but especially highly profitable global companies go out of their way to reduce their taxes. Statistics show that these global companies are highly successful on this point. The tax income in addition to being reduced is also not going to the countries that have financed the new technologies that played an important role in generating the profits. She believes it is naive to believe that national governments can enforce tax regulations on global companies and therefore proposes other solutions.

One suggestion is to attach a royalty obligation to a technological innovation. The first buyer, as the public at large financed the innovation, should after a few years of exclusive rights, license other companies to use the innovation. She also refers to government financed development banks that provide financing for the early sages of development. A good example is such a bank in Germany the KfW (www.KFW.de).

She considers the present system as "dysfunctional", where governments take the highest risks and businesses take all the profits being an example where risks are socialized and the profits privatized.

I have worked extensively in this field, both in business and for government. I found this book stimulating to read and recommend it to others. I am however not sure, to what extent, the suggestions can be implemented. I do not doubt the importance and essential role the government plays in financing R&D. That kind of financing and managing, early stage innovation even including the creation of demand can also be seen as a logical task of government. I do agree that it is important that people at large should become more aware of the entrepreneurial role of government in innovation, and the necessity to organize and finance it.

This new book provides a unified, in-depth, readable introduction to the multipredictor regression methods most widely used in biostatistics: linear models for continuous outcomes, logistic models for binary outcomes, the Cox model for right-censored survival times, repeated-measures models for longitudinal and hierarchical outcomes, and generalized linear models for counts and other outcomes. Treating these topics together takes advantage of all they have in common. The authors point out the many-shared elements in the methods they present for selecting, estimating, checking, and interpreting each of these models. They also show that these regression methods deal with confounding, mediation, and interaction of causal effects in essentially the same way. The examples, analyzed using Stata, are drawn from the biomedical context but generalize to other areas of application. While a first course in statistics is assumed, a chapter reviewing basic statistical methods is included. Some advanced topics are covered but the presentation remains intuitive. A brief introduction to regression analysis of complex surveys and notes for further reading are provided. For many students and researchers learning to use these methods, this one book may be all they need to conduct and interpret multipredictor regression analyses. The authors are on the faculty in the Division of Biostatistics, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California, San Francisco, and are authors or co-authors of more than 200 methodological as well as applied papers in the biological and biomedical sciences. Nice coverage of important topics for biostatisticians

The authors say that they created this book to fit with a course they taught at UC San Francisco to medical students. The book is very sophisticated and a great reference source for practicing biostatisticians in industry or research. It surprises me a little that they find it effective for there non-technical audience. Although the topics are technical and many are advanced they do cover it in a conceptual way without heavy mathematics but still requiring some statistics classes as prerequisite.

Regression does not cover all the techniques of biostatistics but as the authors point out the four topics in the subtitle are among the most important. I know this from my many years of experience as a bisostatistician in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries. They use many good practical examples useing many of the common variables studies in many clinical trials where physical exams are given to record blood pressure and other vital signs and chemistry labs are done to determine cholesterol levels and other things that can be factors in various diseases. Also glucose levels are very important to monitor for diabetes trials.

In addition to the standard topics general estimating equations and generalized linear models are covered and where appropriate bootstrap confidence intervals. There is even a chapter on complex surveys a topic important when quality of life is an endpoint and survey instruments are used to measure it.

In the survival analysis chapter the Kaplan-Meier curves, log rank tests and Cox proportional hazards models are covered as expected but the authors go further to include extensions of the Cox model when the proportional hazards assumption fails. My only disappointment is that there is no coverage of actuarial life tables. At the medical device companies that I worked for it was common to get interval data on events rather than continuous data and then the Cutler-Ederer life table method is the analog for interval data to the Kaplan-Meier estimator for continuous data.

The book covers many topics but is concise as the authors claim. The authors provide a lot of examples that they work out using the statistical package Stata. The authors claim that Stata is the package of choice for biostatistics. This may be the case in academic settings but is certainly not the case in the pharmaceutical industry where SAS is used almost exclusively. I think that it would have been better to show how to write the computer code for solving these problems both in SAS and Stata. To the authors credit Stat is a very good package for their purpose and they do at times mention SAS and SPSS which are the other two major statistical packages used in industry.

All in all this is a very good book that is worth its list price. I will use it as a reference. it also contains a very nice bibliography of 9 pages.

very good book, compact but comprehensive

This book covers a wide range of topics in Biostatistics, in a comprehensive, but not overwhelming way. In my opinion this book has the potential of being useful to a broad audience, from Statisticians to other professionals who do health related research.

Regression Methods in Biostatistics: Linear, Logistic, Survival, and Repeated Measures Models

Regression Methods in Biostatistics is clearly a very well-organized book, covering topics from simple linear regression theory and methods, to the more complex survival analyses. The material is especially recommended for students who have just completed introductory biostatistics and statistical programming, and are looking for practical applications of their skills (of course, for those looking for more thorough practice, it is recommended that those individuals take more advanced biostatistics courses). Relevant examples are abundant throughout the chapters, and the authors are also very thoughtful in providing a website ([...]) where one is able to download the data (in all types of files) used in all the examples in the book, as well as for the practice problems. One drawback to this book, however, is the authors' reliance on only STATA to present the modeling examples; this is incredibly useful for primarily STATA users (the authors provide tips on STATA codes) but not particularly helpful for SAS users, for example (though it is certainly not a very huge learning barrier).
