Relativity Visualized, by Lewis Carroll Epstein

Perfect for those interested in physics but who are not physicists or mathematicians, this book makes relativity so simple that a child can understand it. By replacing equations with diagrams, the book allows non-specialist readers to fully understand the concepts in relativity without the slow, painful progress so often associated with a complicated scientific subject. It allows readers not only to know how relativity works, but also to intuitively understand it.

Relatively Intuitive
By Thomas Wikman
In my opinion the theories of relativity are among the most interesting intellectual achievements in human history. They revolutionized physics and changed the way we think about physics, space, time, mass, energy, electromagnetism and essentially everything in nature. Despite that fact, the theories of relativity are deterministic and possible to visualize, and unlike Quantum Physics they are not statistical in nature and they don’t have a big issue with interpretation.

I’ve been interested in this topic ever since I came across it as a high school student. Therefore I did not learn a lot about relativity from this book. I was more interested in the approach to explaining it, and I think his approach is a very good one.

I’ve found that an explanation for relativity that lacks rigor and quantitative reasoning creates misconceptions. The reader may end up thinking he understands it when he doesn’t. I’ve also found that books that focus on deriving complex equations were not only unattainable to the layman but sometimes left the mathematically inclined student with a poor understanding of relativity as well. Lewis Carroll Epstein’s book “Relativity Visualized” seems to succeed in making relativity accessible to both the layman and those who are mathematically inclined. He explains the special theory of relativity and the general theory of relativity using graphs, visual constructs, and logical puzzles that the reader solves for himself. In a sense he allows the reader to develop the theories of relativity on his own. He avoids equations and formulas but the reader will still discover more exactly what is going on.

One thing that really impressed me with this book is its special focus on the difference between what you see/experience and what you measure. As an example, take two lights that flash at the same time (in your reference frame). They could appear to flash at different times if the distance between them is large. So you will see them flash at different times. However, if you time the light flashes and take the distance into account you can measure that they flashed at the same time (non-relativistic situation). In relativity the differences you measure between frames do not only arise from the distance the light travels or from Doppler Effects but also from the relativity of time and space as well, and Epstein explains the details without confusing the reader. He focuses a lot on simultaneity/non-simultaneity right from the very beginning, and in my opinion understanding relativistic non-simultaneity is crucial to understanding what is going on.

The book also discusses the General Theory of Relativity. The General Theory of Relativity is often seen as completely off limits to the layman. It is typically explained using complex tensor calculus, differential geometry, and topology, or alternatively in a non-technical vague way that leaves the reader clueless. General Relativity was born out of an enigma. Special relativity had shown that energy and mass are the same things, so light has mass. A light beam traveling through a gravitational field must thus bend. However, that means that the side of the light closer to the mass will travel a shorter distance. From known properties of light (always a transverse/orthogonal wave) this means that the side of the light beam closer to the mass moves slower than the outer rim which would violate the constancy of the speed of light in vacuum. To solve this enigma Einstein had to introduce a time warp in gravitational fields. Later he discovered that this time warp would cause objects to fall towards the masses that caused the time warp and the practical effect of this turned out to be essentially identical to Newton’s theory of gravity and thus the mysterious force of gravity could be removed. Einstein also discovered that there is a warp effect on space which is negligible unless the speed of the objects is large (similar to magnetism for electric forces). The book helps you visualize all of this without using complex math.

Lewis Carroll Epstein’s book contains unique pedagogic approaches, novel geometric representations of relativity, as well as engaging questions and answers. For this reason the book is fiercely protected by copy right law. On the negative side, his writing style is somewhat rigid and old fashioned, the drawings and the graphics are sometimes of low quality, and the book might be quite a bit of work for the layman reader, so it requires that you are really interested. However, overall this is a very rigorous, detailed, correct, and yet fairly entertaining book that I highly recommend.

Not Enough Stars for This One
By M. J. Staley
In attempting to learn Einstein's theories of relativity (both special and general) I've accumulated pounds of books and DVD's, and no kidding, this is the best one yet. Not only is this book better than all of the others combined, but it's really all you need. As the title implies, the author uses primarily a visual approach to explain these theories.

Most of the book deals with special relativity (linear-moving frames of reference with no forces at all acting on them), and I already had a pretty good handle on that. My motive in buying this book was that it also deals with general relativity (gravity) and none - absolutely none - of my other books or DVD's covered that in any detail whatsoever.

Now, just because this book seems (to me) to be complete and understandable, this does not mean it's an easy ride - Mr. Epstein is excellent trail guide, but the trail is rough. There are equations, which means you'll have to remember your high school algebra-I, but the equations are not all that bad. If my 66-year-old brain, over a half-century removed from high school, can make sense of these equations, I'm sure you'll be fine.

More importantly, many things that you have found intuitive and common-sense to this point are going to be significantly challenged as speeds become relativistic (i.e. a significant percentage of the speed of light). Don't be surprised if you have to re-read chapters until you get the picture. Relativity is not intuitive and takes a lot of getting used to, but it's achievable.

In the arena of general relativity, this book really shines. Explaining general relativity on a two-dimensional page is next to impossible, so the author gives you some home experiments (paper, pen and scissors) where you can demonstrate the principles to yourself. The author's explanations of this not-at-all-easy subject borders on genius. On your first read, you may bypass the experiments, but I'll bet you get to them eventually. These experiments and explations are so clear, a high school senior could use them to build a legitimate science-fair project.

As I went through the book, I checked to see if a) the author covered all the ground that my other media did and if b) he added to my knowledge. The author passed with flying colors for special relativity, and for general relativity this author provided almost ALL my knowledge.

But there's bad news. This book is no longer in print, and as of the time of this posting, not an awful lot of used copies are being offered. If you want to learn the concepts of relativity, or know someone who does, I'd get a copy fast, because I don't think many owners of this book are going to be parting with it. In my case, this book will become part of my estate.

The principle of relativity
By Dawson C. Smith
The special theory of relativity was published in 1905, the general theory in 1915, though you wouldn't know it from the general ignorance of their most basic statements. Relativity Visualized is my favorite introduction to the subject, in a field crowded with good work, including what was written by Einstein.

If you would like to know why time passes more slowly for a moving object, you need only consult the light-clock diagram in Chapter 4. This illustration alone is worth the price of the book.

Why can we not travel faster than light? You'll find the answer in Chapter 5: "The reason you can't go faster than the speed of light is that you can't go slower. There is only one speed. Everything, including you, is always moving at the speed of light. How can you be moving if you are at rest in a chair? You are moving through time." An object moving through space must divert some of the speed it should be using for traveling through time. At the speed of light, there is no speed left for traveling through time. Photons do not age.

Those who want a little mathematics with their exposition might try Spacetime Physics, by Taylor and Wheeler. I prefer the first edition to the current one; the hardcover is nice, but the paperback edition with the maroon cover has the answers to the problems at the back of the book.

If you want a look at Einstein's papers, they're available in a paperback called The Principle of Relativity (Dover Books), a useful guide to which may be found in Annus Mirabilis: 1905, Albert Einstein, and the Theory of Relativity, by John Gribbin, or Einstein 1905: The Standard of Greatness, by John Rigden. In closing, I will mention The Einstein Theory of Relativity: A Trip to the Fourth Dimension, by Lillian Lieber.

The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University, by Kevin Roose

No drinking.
No smoking.
No cursing.
No dancing.
No R-rated movies.

Kevin Roose wasn't used to rules like these. As a sophomore at Brown University, he spent his days drinking fair-trade coffee, singing in an a cappella group, and fitting right in with Brown's free-spirited, ultra-liberal student body. But when Roose leaves his Ivy League confines to spend a semester at Liberty University, a conservative Baptist school in Lynchburg, Virginia, obedience is no longer optional.

Liberty is the late Reverend Jerry Falwell's "Bible Boot Camp" for young evangelicals, his training ground for the next generation of America's Religious Right. Liberty's ten thousand undergraduates take courses like Evangelism 101, hear from guest speakers like Sean Hannity and Karl Rove, and follow a forty-six-page code of conduct that regulates every aspect of their social lives. Hoping to connect with his evangelical peers, Roose decides to enroll at Liberty as a new transfer student, leaping across the God Divide and chronicling his adventures in this daring report from the front lines of America's culture war.

His journey takes him from an evangelical hip-hop concert to choir practice at Falwell's legendary Thomas Road Baptist Church. He experiments with prayer, participates in a spring break mission trip to Daytona Beach (where he learns to preach the gospel to partying coeds), and pays a visit to Every Man's Battle, an on-campus support group for chronic masturbators. He meets pastors' kids, closet doubters, Christian rebels, and conducts what would be the last print interview of Rev. Falwell's life.

Hilarious and heartwarming, respectful and thought-provoking, THE UNLIKELY DISCIPLE will inspire and entertain believers and nonbelievers alike.

From Publishers Weekly
In what could be described as religious gonzo journalism, Roose documents his experiences as a student for a semester at Liberty University, the largest Christian fundamentalist university in the United States. Coming from progressive Brown University, the author admits that the transition to Liberty, with its iron-clad attempts at controlling student behavior, came with much anxiety. He trains himself to control his foul language and even begins to pray and study the Bible regularly, much to the bewilderment of his liberal Quaker parents. He suffers his way through a course debunking evolution, but finds enjoyment in a Scripture class. Roose may be young—he's a 19-year-old college sophomore—but he writes like a seasoned veteran and obviously enjoys his work. He quickly makes friends at Liberty, but is naïvely stunned and not a little disgusted by their antigay rhetoric. School founder Rev. Jerry Falwell granted Roose an interview for the student newspaper shortly before the famous evangelical's death in May 2007. "Complicated" is how Roose describes Falwell, which is a good descriptor for his undercover student experience. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Brown University student Roose didn’t think of himself as being particularly religious, yet he conceived the novel idea of enrolling at Liberty University, the school Jerry Falwell built, thereby transferring from a school “a notch or two above Sodom and Gomorrah” to the evangelical equivalent of Notre Dame or Brigham Young. His reasons were logical, though curious. To him, a semester at Liberty was like studying abroad. “Here, right in my time zone, was a culture more foreign to me than any European capital.” He tells his story entertainingly, as a matter of trying to blend in and not draw too much attention to himself. One hardened habit he had to break was cursing; he even bought a Christian self-help book to tame his tongue. Throughout his time at Liberty, he stayed level-headed, nuanced, keenly observant. He meant to find some gray in the black-and-white world of evangelicalism, and he learned a few things. His stint at Liberty hardly changed the world but did alter his way at looking at it. That’s a start. --June Sawyers

Review
"Hallelujah for Kevin Roose. This is a remarkable book. He takes us on a fascinating, funny, nuanced journey that doesn't condescend or make glib judgments. It's just what the culture wars need. If I didn't already have kids, I'd adopt Kevin."

--A.J. Jacobs, New York Times bestselling author of The Year Of Living Biblically

"What happens when a Brown undergrad goes undercover at Liberty University? If he's a writer as insightful and open-minded as Kevin Roose, he ends up learning as much about himself as he does about the evangelical Christians he lives with. The Unlikely Disciple provides a funny, compassionate, and revealing look at Jerry Falwell's 'Bible Boot Camp,' and the surprisingly diverse band of true believers who make it their home."

--Tom Perrotta, New York Times bestselling author of Little Children and The Abstinence Teacher

A Humanizing Portrait of the Christian Right
By Daniel Bastian
Paging through Kevin Roose's experiences in Evangelicalville was like a trip down memory lane. While I did not attend Liberty University, I was reared in an identical culture, where fundamentalist attitudes reigned supreme. Where preservation of dogma was paramount. Where absolutist certainty was all but demanded and gray areas of belief decried as a warning sign of pending spiritual failure. Where words like evolution, Darwin, the Big Bang and even science itself were considered evil and subversive. Where being a Christian also meant voting conservative.

Yes, this is an environment with which I'm all too familiar. Thankfully, I did not end up spending my college years at what Roose dubs in his subtitle "America's Holiest University". I know several who did, however, and I can say unreservedly that Roose's portrait in The Unlikely Disciple is not in the least a misrepresentation or caricature. If anything, it's too balanced, and that's quite an accomplishment for someone emigrating from Brown University.

How does someone raised in a secular family and enrolled in an Ivy League institution end up transplanting himself to its antithesis in nearly every major respect? The early outlines of the idea formed while interning for A. J. Jacobs on Jacobs' book The Year of Living Biblically. Roose realized that there is a subculture in America with whom he had never really interfaced: the religious right. You hear about them all the time on the news and in satirical send-ups by liberal media, but there's a difference between drawing your verdict from secondhand voices on the one hand and first-person experience on the other. He decided that going incognito to live among them, immersing himself in their inner society, would be an effective way to bridge the gap. And who knows--maybe his story could change how each side views the other and help moderate the bickering to an acceptable volume.

Much to his family's chagrin, Roose's application was accepted and he took his academic pursuits south of the Mason-Dixon line to Liberty University--the bastion of evangelicalism itself. At the time, the school belonged to Jerry Falwell, the same incendiary televangelist-cum-segregationist who campaigned against MLK, Jr. in the 1950s and 60s, who blamed 9/11 on feminists, abortionists, gays, pagans and the ACLU, and who frequently referred to AIDS as "God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals." With the Falwell era in full bloom, Roose found himself in what could properly be labeled the epicenter of Christian fundamentalism, a mini-kingdom dedicated to churning out warriors for God who could defend the values of the Christian right against an encroaching secular-liberal hegemony. This was no Brown. Putting up a credible facade around his new ultra-religious classmates would not be easy.

If culture shock was on the agenda, he certainly came to the right place. Draconian injunctions against R-rated films and all physical contact with the opposite sex (outside of hand-holding); weekly Bible studies, daily prayer sessions and omnipresent invocations of Jesus fever; courses that felt less like education than Christian apologetics, more sermonic and indoctrinational than didactic; surplus doses of Adam-and-Eve-based "science", homophobia-ridden expletives and rhetoric laden with allusions to hell. It's all here, and having been an insider for so long I can only imagine how alien Liberty must have felt to an observer outside the fold.

A lesser individual might have treated this as a faultfinding mission to be spun into an acerbic exposé on the backwardness of conservative Christianity. Roose chooses the higher road. Far from the minimally participative bystander, he invests his time in all of the extracurricular activities his schedule can accommodate. He befriends members of his Bible study and carries on late-night discussions with his hallmates. He goes on dates with chaste Christian girls. He joins the choir at Thomas Road Baptist Church and proselytizes spring-breakers on Floridian beaches. He even meets with a spiritual mentor once a week in which his masturbation habits tend to come up with irregular frequency. You know, normal college stuff, minus the Jesus-stuffed diet.

While Roose came mentally equipped for the fervorous religiosity, his semester away wasn't without its surprises. Like any school, one can find a diversity of views strolling the halls, and Liberty is no exception. Roose encounters several students during his time there who don't fit the mold Liberty has prepared for them: feminists, a small but closeted gay community, students who find creationism incoherent at best, who stubbornly refuse to toe the 'climate change is a global hoax' party line, who aren't militantly homophobic and don't believe same-sex attraction is morally suspect, and who sincerely question the values and political dispositions of the university's leadership. His exchanges with these nonconformists were enlightening and will be appreciated by those exploring a more progressive faith.

THE STRUCTURE OF FUNDAMENTALISM

Offensive, comical and rebarbative all at the same time, many may wonder how such a community can survive under the duress of modernity. As a former evangelical with a foot in both sides of the pond, I know the mentality well. More than anything else, institutions like Liberty are interested in the doctrinaire attachment to an ideology. Their dogma is a thinly veiled version of Christian dominionism. Any information deemed in conflict with said dogma is viscerally suppressed; inconvenient facts are pushed aside and only addressed once they become too difficult to ignore. Fundamentalist communities are so arranged as to propagate internal views at the expense of external ones. Within the propagandistic bubble, only views consistent with the dogma are given any weight. Its members are fastened, often without a weighing of alternatives, to a system that valorizes ignorance and trammels free thought. They are not aware that they are 'suckers' bred on intellectual deprivation, any more than fish are aware of the oxygen outside the fishbowl.

This basic schematic maps well to several pockets of Christian fundamentalism and churches dotting the American landscape, even if its application to today's Liberty loses some precision. Towards the end of the book, Roose learns through his continued communications with Liberty students that the school has grown a bit more lax in the ideology department following Falwell's departure. Given the extreme contrast between the late reverend's views and those of mainstream America, we can only hope this was inevitable.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Possibly the defining introspective work of our generation, Roose's sojourn turned memoir is an honest, transparent, balanced look into a cultural divide that seems more unbridgeable by the year. His stay at Liberty was attended by no shortage of disheartening revelations, including run-ins with narrow views on sexual ethics, gender and race, rampant (faculty-encouraged) homophobia, and distortions of inconvenient science, sentiments deeply rooted in American culture and for which Liberty is but an emblem. But contrary to what might be expected from its gimmicky-sounding premise, Roose doesn't spend the length of the book razzing de-intellectualized Bible-belters who max out on the Christian Richter scale. Roose stepped into the shoes of an evangelical to learn about their beliefs, values and traditions, and came away with so much more. He found that on the surface there is much that separates the evangelical community from the rest of American society, but scratch below that surface and you find a lot more commonality than polarizing media profiles would suggest.

This is easily one of the best books I've ever read, perhaps because it hits so close to home. Roose's closing words in the epilogue continue to resonate with me.

"At the end of the day, the two sides of this culture war still have glaring differences, and those differences are likely to continue to define the relationship between the evangelical community and America at large for decades to come. Humans have always quarreled over religious beliefs, and I suppose they always will. But judging from my post-Liberty experience, this particular conflict isn't built around a hundred-foot brick wall. If anything, it's built around a flimsy piece of cardboard, held in place on both sides by paranoia and lack of exposure. It's there, no doubt, but it's hardly forbidding. And more important, it's hardly soundproof. Religious conflict might be a basic human instinct, but I have faith, now more than ever before, that we can subvert that instinct for long enough to listen to each other." (p. 315)

One of my favorite memoirs!
By WestMetroMommy
This is a re-read for me--I had originally read it, on the recommendation of an Agnostic friend--back in 2009 when it was first published. This year, I suggested it for my book club as our March selection.

This book was born out of another book--My Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs. In that book, Jacobs takes on a "slave" as part of his Biblical experience. The 21st century American translation for "slave" is apparently "unpaid college intern" and Kevin Roose, as freshman at Brown University, fit that bill. As part of his slave duties, Roose accompanied Jacobs on a research trip to Liberty Univeristy in Lynchburg, TN where, while waiting for Jacobs to conclude an interview or something, Roose first makes contact with "the other side."

I have to start with a very notable thing about this book: it is one of the few books that I enjoyed more the second time I read it--and, to be fair, I enjoyed it quite a bit the first time I read it. I don't know if it the 5 added years in maturity caused this, or the fact that I didn't have to cut through the initial shock factor to get to the meat of the book that caused this phenomenon. Whatever it is, I'm not complaining.

I will say that I could relate to a lot of this. I did not attend Liberty, but I did attend a school (the College of William and Mary) with a large evangelical presence. Coming from the Pacific Northwest, this was a sector of the population that I had had very little contact with until going to college. As a Christian (mainline Protestant), I had a number of things in common with these people--more than Roose did when he embarked on his experiement--but there was still a bit of a chasm between us. I am still in touch with some of my evangelical friends from school and I am glad that they were part of my college experience.

My head is still spinning from the fact that Roose was in college when he wrote this. When I was his age, I was still trying to decide on a major and here he is, writing a book. I guess that summer of slavery was good for him.

But, anyway, back to the book. I adored this book--one thing I have never been able to truly understand is the divisions within Christianity. I mean, I get that we have different ways of expressing out faith, but the idea of you have to do this and this and this to be saved is just beyond me. Last time I checked, we were saved by God's Grace (yeah, I'm a Lutheran). I think that Roose was actually quite brave to try to at least understand this divide by going into the Lion's Den of American Evangelicalism.

One thing that caught me this reading that I didn't pick up on the first time I read this book is the question of ethics. I mean, Roose is pulling off a great deception here and is pulling others--his classmates and hallmates--unknowingly into the deception with him. While this is something to think about--and it should be thought about while reading this book--I found it to be a part of the book and not a detriment to the book. Roose, himself, questions his ethics during his Liberty experience.

Roose is a very gifted writer. This could have been a comedic book or it could have been overly academic. It was neither--it was an entertaining, thought provoking account of someone who chose to learn about a foreign culture (one that was a 12 hour drive away).

I will say this: I think different readers will have different reactions to this book depending on their own views. I can see how some might find it cynical and others might find it insulting and others might find it preachy. However, I can't base my own feelings on how others might feel and, in the end, this has become on of my favorite memoirs.

An Excellent View Into An Evangelical Subculture
By Philip
I was originally hesitant in picking up this book. After all, the premise is based in a sort of deception research; representing oneself as something one is not. That said, it's one of the best amateur ethnographic works I've had the pleasure of reading. Kevin Roose is helping a professor on a project when he goes to Thomas Road Baptist Church, run by the late Jerry Falwell, and while there he speaks with three young people...or rather, he attempts to. He realizes just how big the "God Divide" can be, when it seems they're speaking separate languages. The idea begins to fester within him, and soon, this Ivy League student is on his way to one of America's strictest Evangelical universities.

Had I read this book while I was still a Baptist, I probably would have been downright offended at points, but that's because it's easy to be defensive when someone points out a negative thing. However, Roose's outside view of Evangelical life and subculture provide an interesting look that people within the movement most likely don't think of. A friend gets him ready by putting him through basic Bible boot camp and by loaning him her Veggietales DVDs. Anyone who has grown up in this generation in the Evangelical subculture automatically gets that reference and can understand how it was useful to him in preparing.

From singing in a choir, to the dilemma of what to do when you fall in love while living a lie, to having to reveal your secret after returning to Brown, this book never lets up a nonstop pace of the challenges of living within a subculture outside of one's own. It also gives those of us who are Christians an idea of how those outside the faith might see us. Tellingly, it takes Roose a while to find people who are arguing about the ACLU and when a gay friend from his secular school visits, he fits right in with the Evangelical students.

If this book were to be summed up in a single word, it would be "complexity". The students at Liberty are a diverse and complex bunch of people, no two exactly alike, and very few conforming to the stereotypes the author expected. The professors were a wide ranging group from a sarcastic Creationist who kept insisting he was a real scientist to the pastor who tried to "cure" gay students (not out of hate, Roose reflects, but out of a genuine if misplaced love and pity) with counseling. Even Jerry Falwell, Roose notes, upon the famous televangelist's death, was a complicated man; a prankster to those around him, a grandfather and father that doted, a demigod to some of the students, and a man who believed every volatile thing he was saying.

Roose finds himself sometimes longing for what his fellow students have spiritually, but in the end, he stays himself. In fact, this is one of the most poignant parts of the book, as his admission of the truth to his Liberty friends elicits heartbreak from many that he isn't Saved. But otherwise, they treat him no differently, because he's still "Rooster" and their friend. If you want a good look at what it's like to live within America's Evangelical Subculture, then this book is well worth the price.

Amazon.com Review
Ben Hogan's premise in this 1957 classic is driven home in bold letters: "THE AVERAGE GOLFER IS ENTIRELY CAPABLE OF BUILDING A REPEATING SWING AND BREAKING 80." Religions are founded on less, and Hogan's detailed analyses and illustrated demonstrations of grip, stance, posture, and the two basic components of the swing make up a sacred book. Though its very simplicity seems dated, this is the tome of technique that should serve as the foundation of every golf library.

Review
Jim Fogerty Professional, Sunset Country Club, St. Louis Most articles on golf deal only in theory, but Ben is to be congratulated on probably the most practical series on golf instruction ever written.

Timothy E. Sick Calgary After reading the first two articles, I had a 73 for the first time in my life, and hadn't played for six months before that.

Frank Sadler Professional, Bellingham Country Club, Bellingham, Washington It's the first time words and illustrations have made golfing technique absolutely clear. I'm applying the lessons to my teaching program here and highly recommending them to my pupils. I'd say it's the greatest instruction series of all time. Women are particularly keen on it. It'll make a lot of new golfers -- good golfers.

About the Author
Ben Hogan discovered golf as a fifteen-year-old caddie. He turned pro at seventeen, joined the tour full-time as a nineteen-year-old in 1931, and has won nine pro majors. A four-time PGA Player of the Year, he is one of only four golfers to win all four professional majors. At forty-one, he won five of six tournaments, including the Masters, U.S. Open and the British Open. Hogan died at eighty-four in 1997 in his home in Fort Worth.

A great read with excellent graphics!
By John Stewart
Hogan's book is a short, but comprehensive analysis of the golf swing. His stated purpose of giving the average weekend golfer the tools to develop a repeatable golf swing has, in my opinion, been met. The fundamentals he espouses are few, and simple enough to implement without causing one to overthink. I found his views about grip and stance, and their importance in setting up the rest of the swing, particularly helpful. If you're a student of the game, this book is a prerequisite before reading the multitude of expert analyses of Hogan's swing that are available elsewhere. The advanced golfer interested in developing his/her knowledge of shaping shots and ball flight won't find information here. But if you're like me and want to develop better consistency of contact with all your clubs and eliminate anxiety as you stand over the ball, then this book is for you.

Excellent for New Golfers - Learn Good Habits Early
By MTE
I can't rate this book highly enough for new golfers.

I started with golf approximately 2-3 weeks ago. The most "golf" I played before was mini-golf and, of course, Wii Golf.

I played nine holes and went to the driving range. I was terrible, as expected. Inconsistant, my back hurt after, and I probably shot an 80...in nine holes.

I bought this book, determined to not build bad habits.

I read the book in a night For a week, I practiced my grip, posture, and swing. I went to the driving range and it was night and day. I still have a LONG way to go, but the improvement was remarkable and noticeable.

The book is well written. Hogan's instructions are easy to follow and there are many illustrations included. Hogan did a great job explaining the "why" for grip, position, etc. He also gave sage advice when you notice a problem. Don't focus on the problem alone. There's a reason in your swing why it is happening. At first, I shrugged off the idea of keeping a notebook when I golf, but I now see the reason. Ben Hogan doesn't need my endorsement as a great golfer, but he has it.

Much more interesting than I had envisioned an instructional on golf to be...
I bought and read this to be a helpful and supportive wife as my husband learns a new sport. I wanted a bit of instruction for myself as well in the unlikely event that I ever went with him.
The end result was that I am very interested in learning myself now. The instruction and illustrations in this book were excellent. It was all well organized and detailed without being complicated.
It also makes the sport sound so much more interesting, fun and inclusive of grace and choreography of movement than I had imagined.

Amazon.com Review
One doesn't usually think of rock stars as insightful, but, against all odds, glam-trash superstar Marilyn Manson has written a book that is actually an intelligent look at growing up. This autobiographical bildungsroman brings out the creepiest aspects of childhood, conveying the terror and fascination that young Marilyn (then called Brian) felt when looking through his grandfather's pornography, getting his first French kiss, and being taunted by the girls he wanted to "date." Manson has the benefit of having grown up as an outcast and loser and then having become a star without forgetting what he went through. This gives him an incredibly broad perspective, which he brings to bear on his ordinary life in order to convey the more potent and frightening moments that shaped him into the pale-skinned weirdo that the Christian Right loves to hate. Best of all, Manson is shockingly honest, and portrays himself as occasionally stupid, self-centered, over-sensitive, ignoble, and, mostly, highly fallible and human. It's a long way from the auto-hagiographies that other stars have written, and it's easily one of the best reads in celebrity bio. --James DiGiovanna

Gross, Arrogant, Fascinating Freak.

Marilyn Manson will always remind me of that deep well of imaginative, fantastical nonsense that is the collective mind of christian fundamentalists. As someone born in the early 90's, he was the guy the older kids were warned about by the well-meaning-if-zealously-nonsensical spokespeople of my various local congregations. Warnings that filtered down to us.

He sacrifices animals onstage

Made a pact with the devil

Worst of all; he is a homosexual

Presumably all stuff they said about Black Sabbath in the 70's and Motley Crue in the 80's. Gun's and Roses in the early 90's. Sinatra in the 50's.

And it will probably never end

Anyways, now for the review:

Brian Werner (birth name) was born and raised in a small town in Ohio. It seems like from an early age his life was filled with the disgusting and obscene. Central to this book are themes of unbleonging, anti-social anger, social disgust, filth, and the character of Werner's grandfather; an off-putting, strange old man with perverse, obscene habits indulged in from his filthy basement. The story arch is not really a personal one, despite the tital, because Manson barely changes his personality beyond the 3rd chapter, but really it is the story of his rising from a hated freak on a local level, to a hated freak on the international stage.

The book is vulgar, as you'd expect, but if i'm reading a rock star's biography its just what i would expect. What did put me off was how gross everything was. Piss, blood and vomit make an appearance every few pages. A girl smokes old ground up bones from a bong. Manson picks up a broken beer bottle and cuts his chest open. Werner's grandfather jacks off unknowingly in front of his 13 year old grandkid. Manson himself is not a pretty sight to see. This man is obsessed with filth.

Manson is profoundly arrogant, like most people who enter being hated and self-hating are, and this book is filled with his various judgments and insights. Christians do not come off well; neither do Americans. Moralizers come off immoral. Manson is hyper sensitive to such hypocrisy.

The most prominant celeb featured in Trent Reznor, who signed Manson and was there for his mainstream breakout. Traci Lords and Jemma Jameson both make appearences, as well as Courtney Love, and Connan O'Brian. But most of the chacters are personal friends, acquaintances, enemies.

And as you'll notice from the heading, Neil Strauss was "involved" with the writing, making the prose superb.

Overall, an excellent rock bio, excellent peice of writing, and fascinating story. His unique story makes this a worthwhile read even to those who would never listen to his industrial garbage-pop.

If he had willing partners unconcerned with dirty needles & sexually transmitted diseases that's their problem
By GAM
I could stomach everything but the animal cruelty. His drug use, deviant lifestyle & filthy personal hygiene was his business. If he had willing partners unconcerned with dirty needles & sexually transmitted diseases that's their problem. But Marilyn is a coward, bully & sadist who gets off on torturing & sacrificing defenseless creatures. The world is better off without evil incarnate like him & his ilk.

Honest and at Times Disturbing Account from Marilyn Manson
By Jeff McMillan
I have seen Manson and the band live a few times later in his career, where the antics on stage aren't quite as depraved as some of what is written about in the book. In addition to writing about his life; letters and "stories" from people or entities that also opposed the band, their performances and their rise to stardom are included. An interesting read, to say the least, but this book and some of its content is not for the faint of heart or the queasy of stomach. The reader must consider the subject and the content, to know exactly what type of written journey they are going to embark upon.
Sex, Drugs and Rock 'N' Roll are on full display in this book.

What a great book. I will admit he has a way of making me feel like my progress in yoga is not progress at all...but that is the point. One must be ready to read this book, and be ready for the feelings that will come up. It is well written and pretty easy to understand but don't expect it to be a cake walk. Some of the chapters are very short but are filled with such information you need to read more than once. I can honestly say that I have grown tremendously from reading this book and my asana practice has also grown. There a If you're ready to grow your yoga practice then GET THIS BOOK.

Beautiful meditations on practicing and teaching yoga
By Craig Shoemake
While I find I enjoy and benefit from anything Iyengar writes, I was actually more impressed by this book than I had expected to be. I did not go into it with any particular expectations--perhaps that helped--except the very positive reviews on Amazon. It is not an asana book, and Iyengar not being a scholar (he does not even have a high school degree he says on page 28, and was a "dumb student"), it is not a "learned" tome of any sort. This book is, rather, a subtle, gentle, at times revealing, and quite elegantly written series of reflections on the practice and teaching of yoga. Mr. Iyengar may not have been much of a student (what does this say about schools, I wonder?), but this book is clearly the product of an intelligent, discerning, and dedicated life.

It is divided into five parts: (1) "Yoga and Life," with essays describing generally the traditional Hindu view of the life process and how yoga fits in with that; (2) "The Tree and Its Parts," where the eight limbs defined in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are described; (3) "Yoga and Health," which is pretty self-explanatory; (4) "The Self and Its Journey," examining the higher practices of pranayama and meditation leading to samadhi; and (5) "Yoga In the World," which has only two essays, the first about yoga as an art form, the second about the requirements and responsibilities of yoga teachers.

Although Iyengar does quote a bit of Sanskrit here and there, I would not say any of the essays are particularly "technical," though this is certainly not to say they are at all superficial. Quite the opposite--this book could not have been written by someone who was anything less than a master of his field, with long years of experience and reflection. Which leads me to say that although anyone can read this book--beginner or advanced, the merely curious to the hardcore--what you get out of it will definitely be determined by the depth of your own practice. Many rereadings, particularly when one is at different stages of development, or when one has perhaps crossed the line from student to teacher, will no doubt yield new insights and understandings.

I'd like to share a few points of what, for me, were highlights. Mr. Iyengar has a way with analogies, and a brilliant one is found on page 17, where the four original castes (peasant, merchant, warrior, priest) are compared to attitudes or states of mind. His essay entitled "Childhood" (20) was simply beautiful, and I found the description of some of his life contained in "Family Life" (27) very inspiring. The second part of the book is an excellent overview of yoga practice as a way of meditation and illumination; I thought in particular the notion of the Eight Limbs (ashtanga) of Patanjali as a hologram (see "The Roots," page 50) to be nothing if not brilliant. There are, in fact, many very insightful and illuminating passages in this section, things I never thought about in quite that way. His discussion of yoga as a healing art (especially from p. 93ff) was very interesting--I wish he would write a whole book devoted to his experiences in this regard. I could go on, as there are many excellent passages, but lastly I will cite p. 117ff as a brilliant evocation of why the Buddhist practice of mindfulness is so easily in accordance with the practice of asanas. Iyengar writes:

"Conciousness is always present in our finger, but most of the time we are not aware of it, so the consciousness of the finger is dormant. You should know the difference between consciousness and awareness. Consciousness exists everywhere in the body. When you are walking, if a thorn touches your foot, what happens? It pricks, and you immediately feel the pain, so you cannot say that consciousness was not there. But until he thorn pricked you, you were not aware of your foot. The consciousness in your foot was dormant, but the moment the foot was pricked, it was brought to the surface. To awaken that dormant consciousness is awareness. Your consciousness is six feet long, or five and a half feet long in your body--it is as long as your body is tall. But awareness is small. Awareness may extend two feet, one foot, one inch or half an inch. The yogi says that by practising asanas, you can bring awareness to an extension equal to that of consciousness. This is total awareness. This is meditation."

Mr. Iyengar is of course a hatha yogin, and while practicing asanas may take you a long ways, I do not feel it is a substitute for a hard-core sitting practice. This may be the area where he comes up short, and indeed, the only passage of the book that I thoroughly disagreed with revealed this. On p. 139 he writes:

"If you work diligently on asana, pranayama and pratyahara, you will receive your reward of dharana, dhyana and samadhi, which are the effects of that practice. They CANNOT BE PRACTISED DIRECTY [emphasis added]. If we say that we are practising them, this means that we do not know the earlier aspects of yoga. It is only by practising the earlier aspects that we can hope to arrive at their effects."

I don't agree with this at all. In fact, as a statement of the reality of meditation practice (especially in the Buddhist tradition, pick your yana), it is patently false. All over the Buddhist world (not to mention the Christian, Muslim, Jain, Hindu, etc), people come to meditation without ever having practiced asanas or pranayama, and many of them do just fine. Might they benefit from asanas? Of course! But, as Iyengar showed quite eloquently, the Path can be approached and the Goal attained through any of the limbs of yoga (though some are more direct and less time-consuming). While I do not wish to make overmuch of this one little misstep in an otherwise superb book, I do think it points out a shortcoming in Iyengar's approach, which appears marked by an imbalance favoring asanas over direct meditation practice.

This aside--which is just my nitpicking--I cannot recommend this book enthusiastically enough to anyone exploring the world of yoga. Read it, practice, reflect, and reread it. Do not read it for information, rather for grounding, seasoning, maturation. If yoga is a tree (and since Mr. Iyengar says it is, who are we to argue?) then read it and learn to think like a tree--to make my own unworthy stab at a different sort of analogy!

An Esteemed Teacher's Short Essays
By George H. Cox
In yoga circles, Mr. Iyengar taught many of our teachers' teachers. His attention to posture details and teaching method are renowned. And yet we rarely have a chance to hear his thoughts on the place of yoga practice and teaching in the contemporary world. The 36 short essays in this reader give us such an opportunity. Each little essay is compact and addresses a single reflection. This enables the reader to take in the theme and then spend time considering its importance for his or her practice or teaching. Never has Iyengar been more digestible. Recommended reading for thoughtful yogis and interested observers of the spiraling yoga phenomenon in America and around the world.

Reverb
Equalization
Delay
Pitch Shift
Volume
More than 100 line drawings and illustrations.
Accompanying website featuring examples of all FX covered in the book.
Discography of FX at the end of each relevant chapter.

From the Sound FX Intro:

The most important music of our time is recorded music. The recording studio is its principle musical instrument. The recording engineers and music producers who create the music we love know how to use signal processing equipment to capture the work of artists, preserving realism or altering things wildly, as appropriate. While the talented, persistent, self-taught engineer can create sound recordings of artistic merit, more productive use of the studio is achieved through study, experience and collaboration. This book defines the technical basis of the most important signal processing effects used in the modern recording studio, highlights the key drivers of sound quality associated with each, shares common production techniques used by recording engineers with significant experience in the field, references many of the touchstone recordings of our time, and equips the reader with the knowledge needed to comfortably use effects devices correctly, and, more importantly, to apply these tools creatively.

Review
"Sound FX is a entertaining, informative, and useful book that will find more time on the mixing console and effects rack than on a shelf in the library of practicing engineers, musicians and producers who want a better understanding of what the boxes in the rack or the plugins in their computer can do and why do it." - Neil A. Shaw - AES Journal Dec 07

Unlocking the Creative Potential of Recording Studio Effects
By Charles J. Holbrow
Of the many audio engineering books I have encountered, Sound FX stands out in several distinct ways.

The Book is incredibly thorough and detailed. After covering the basic function of each studio effect, Sound FX goes on to describe many different uses that each effect can serve. For example at the end of the chapter on compression (page 163), nine different goals that compression can accomplish are listed. Over the course of the chapter, compression has been analyzed so thoroughly that you will understand how and to achieve each one of these nine desired effects and why and when you would want to.

Why would an engineer pick one compressor over another? There are several paragraphs outlining characteristics that change from model to model. Knowing what to listen for helped cue me on to some subtle differences that I had previously not heard. Sound FX is filled with details like this about every effect that mixing engineers use. Other studio effects are described just as carefully. (EQ, expansion, gating, reverb delay, pitch shifting, distortion, and so on)

Have you ever listened to a compressed track, and cranked the compressor's release time from as low as possible to as high as possible and not hear the difference? Sound FX explains what you need to listen for. Have you tried adjusting the "room size" on a reverb unit and not heard the difference? Again Sound FX explains what this means and what the sonic results are.

While engineers working on material that is not musical may find valuable information here, the book is primarily about working with music. A fair amount of technical information is presented, but the material always circles back to how the technology can be used to accomplish musical tasks.

It's taken me time to learn what effects are needed to to find the sound I want to hear. Understanding the complexity of what each effect has to offer and knowing what to listen for when I adjust parameters has drastically improved my mixes. The authors experience and meticulous attention to detail comes through here and analyzes the material more effectively than any other source I have encountered. After reading, I'm always left with a powerful urge to rush to the studio and put the material to use.

The Well Tempered Engineer
By R. Kwan
Sound FX is a comprehensive, beautifully laid out resource for all levels of recording engineers. Professor Case has found a way of re-examining the tried and true building blocks of music production that imparts new perspectives while covering fundamental topics. The book aims to empower engineers to understand the science behind the tools of the control room in order to inspire greater creativity within their recordings. Many of the described effects utilize tools found in most studios, but in a way that will be new to many of the readers, even those working in major recording studios. Musical references have been included so that the reader seek out discussed effects first hand.

Perhaps the greatest asset of Sound FX is the manner by which the material is presented; Alex Case has included a light hearted, witty narrative that makes the reading experience a breeze regardless of the material.

As is probably true of many audio people, I own several books covering various topics in recording but none that are as insightful and as inpiring as this one; highly recommended!

Excellent Resource
By John Melley
I've had the benefit of taking courses from the author prior to this book being published. As a result I know his teaching style. The author's style and voice comes through loud and clear in the text. It's enjoyable to read while you're learning some rather complex subjects.

Coming from a non engineering background I find the explanations of concepts clear and the graphics used to illustrate the concepts extremely helpful. This text will be useful for those wishing to learn more about the science behind the art.

If you want to know things like how to add a touch of reverb to make a voice pop through a music bed without having to simply lower the volume of the music; this book will show you how to do that and other production techniques in a way a non-techie will understand. It will also explain 'why' it works.

Having said that, this is not a "Sound Effects for Dummies" book either. This book goes in-depth. It will benefit those who have a technical/engineering background and are more "into the math" of sound and acoustics as well.

Access to the website with audio examples and the samples that are used to further illustrate the concepts is an invaluable resource that obviously took time to compile.

Investing the $39.95 for the knowledge "Sound FX" contains is a "no brainer" for anyone seriously interested in learning more about the science of sound and sound design.
