About the Author
George M. Cole, PhD, PE, PLS, is a practicing surveyor whose assignments have ranged from surveying remote areas of the Arctic to participating in the first worldwide satellite geodesy program. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Tulane University and a master of science degree and doctorate from Florida State University. In addition to authoring PPI’s Fundamentals of Surveying Practice Exam and the Principles and Practice of Surveying Practice Exam, Dr. Cole has contributed articles to Point of Beginning magazine and published a guide to the legal and technical aspects of water boundaries. He has recently served as a visiting professor of surveying at the University of Puerto Rico and currently teaches at Florida State University.

Concise review of surveyor problem solving

The best way to describe this book is by showing two photos of pages that I selected at random. This contains a thorough review of the calculations that would need to be solved in just about every fieldwork scenario you can imagine, focused on the NCEES PS exam. Because the explanations are so concise, it's not something that would explain surveying principles deep enough for the beginner to get a real understanding, but rather this is best who have already studied the basic concepts elsewhere. This is a very well organized book with many geometric illustrations so it is productive for the busy person for quick reference and review.

a book to behold

This book has EVERYTHING you would ever want to know about surveying. A very large portion of the book is dedicated to mathematics, especially trigonometry. Tricks of the trade in area and volume finding are clearly explained. It goes into 'soft' side of surveying such as licensing and business. It has very little information on using theodolite. I guess that's left for a user manual, as there are many different kinds.But the theory described in this book should apply to all such devices.

Indispensible ...

This is the most up-to-date version of this text. For instance, the section on aerial mapping has been expanding from the earlier editions. Therefore, if you have one of those earlier editions, it may be well worth the investment to upgrade to this newest version. (This is especially true for university libraries updating their reference section and for professors using this text as a supplement to their classes).

While seemingly a hefty price, this text is invaluable to those preparing for the Fundamental (FS) Surveying Exam. This massive text is, by all means, comprehensive. Now, this is also suitable for those studying for the Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exam. Still, the author does caution that "it may not be suitable as a stand-alone guide for all portions of the PS" (intro). So, if this is your current situation, be certain to supplement your studies with other texts also.

What I like about the text is that it not only prepares one for the exam itself, but demystifies the process (which can radically diminish the anxiety that accompanies these exams). If you have not spoken with others who have taken this exam, try to invest time in the introduction. You will learn that your exam will be unique to you (i.e. the test-taker next to you will NOT have the same exam that you have), that you are permitted to review problems BUT not permitted to jump ahead to specific problems, and the interface contains a pop-up scientific calculator. By reading this section, there will be fewer surprises. You will, most assuredly, feel more confident in entering the exam. (Still, as a professor, I have had to take many such exams ... and, I know for a fact that it will also help to speak with some folks who have already been through the process. So, if possible, try to do that. Getting honest feedback from several people is optimal.)

This immaculately edited, intensely researched text can help you polish areas in which you feel slightly deficient and, equally as valuable, it will confirm the areas in which you excel. In sum, it will be a boon to you.

If you are taking the FS exam, invest in this text. You will not regret it.

A book that helps you effectively troubleshoot and you don't end up wasting a bunch of time detouring

I'm a professional programmer for less than 2 years, however my debugging skill stands sharp amongst my team, owing to this book. I cannot believe how powerful these debugging rules are. For example, one time I have to troubleshoot a very tricky race condition issue. The rule "quite thinking and look" forced me not to make any pre-assumptions, and rather look into the loggings and the data in the database. Along with "divide and conquer", I was able to narrow down the amount of data to look into and find it is a race condition issue by looking at the update date fields.

Interestingly enough, I think some programmers do make pre-assumptions when troubleshooting. This set of debugging rules advice against the pre-assumptions and stick with scientific methodologies.

Excellent non-technical book

I greatly enjoyed reading this book on the metro because it was non-technical and it sounded just like when I help my father solve various electronic/mechanical issues. In fact, it was like he was right there telling me the war stories despite him being 5800KM away.

As per pros for the book:
* Rang true with me by stating, don't get lost in the details, but actually get in there and LOOK at the problem - not read about it.
* Good stories and examples
* Good flow and not boring
* Good techniques for problem solving
* Good price for the content

Cons:
* Reads a bit like a personal opinion like rant
* Needs a bit more editing (small typos)
* Slightly repetitive (but I understand that this may have been a literary tactic)

Honestly, this was a good read and I would gladly recommend this book for any person attempting to improve their thought process regarding debugging or solving problems. Undergraduate and graduate students + professors should seek to read this book or have it among the required readings for advanced programming classes.

Excellent debugging tips!

I just finished reading David Agans' wonderful book, "Debugging". I've worked in the software development field for many years and I wish I had this book when I started out. I really like his approach to debugging because it is practical and methodical. In a nutshell, David suggests that you should trust no one, "stop thinking and look". Basically, rely on how you think the module / code should work. You need to look and verify the actions / results.

Even if you are not a software developer or an engineer, this book is still valuable. Members of the QA team and help desk can also benefit from this book. It will help you in your troubleshooting efforts and also allow you to file bug reports that contain good data.

This book is only 175 pages, it is an easy read ... but it is filled with practical advice. Great job David!

RICK “SHAQ” GOLDSTEIN SAYS: IN THE RING THERE IS AN ANIMAL INSIDE ME… THE STREETS TAUGHT ME WHAT I NEEDED IN LIFE & BOXING

This is the autobiography of the infamous “MANOS DE PIEDRA”… “Hands of Stone… multi-world-boxing-champion… Roberto Duran. And as Duran likes to say…”Manos”… not “Mano”… both hands. This book… fortunately… just like the man himself in the ring… is unabashedly direct… with no defense provided or intended. Unfortunately… one or two times a little bit of civility… would have been better for all. I pride myself on being a type of “street-fighter” in life… having come from meager circumstances… but absolutely nothing like Roberto… who came straight… straight… straight… from the harshest impoverished streets of Panama. I warn any potential readers… that the writing… is just like he talks. In addition to my early background… I am also an Honorably Discharged Viet Nam Era Veteran… and as such… I unabashedly admit… that an extremely high percentage of my language… in the right circumstances… includes many four letter words. So when the book starts out… Duran (through the writing) talked to me like I’m used to talking and being talked to. But… I always try my best to be a perfect gentleman in front of women and others deserving of such courtesies. So… it was very disappointing… and offsetting… the way Duran would talk to people like Sugar Ray Leonard’s wife and others. As I’ve tried to attest to in the opening of my review… I’m not from a lot of culture and don’t drink with my pinkie in the air… but Duran’s language was totally out of place in the proximity of some.

Putting that aside… if you’re a big fan of boxing… and the time of Duran’s heyday was a golden age of boxing…. you can either relive your experience… or expand your historical perspective of the fight game. The championships he won… have truly earned him not only enshrinement in multiple boxing Halls of Fame… but rightful inclusion on many top ranking lists of all-time.

It is almost poetic… when I tell you that this book is written… exactly… I mean exactly… like Duran fought. When the bell rings… and the book is opened… there is no dancing around! “Manos de Piedra” comes right at you… he cuts off the ring… and starts battering you inside… and it doesn’t stop till the end of the book. In addition to the gamesmanship… and psychological manipulation… that went into every big fight… you’ll also get a grueling immersion into the pounds… YES LITERALLY POUNDS… of sweat… like blood dripping in a barrel… that was each and every training camp. I always knew… about his enormous… non-stop partying… and that quite frankly… was one of the things I loved about him… along with him… going inside and challenging the manhood… of ever guy he fought. But… until this book… I never truly knew… I don’t know of any… non-insider… who really knew… that at times he’d have to lose 60-70 pounds in a month! (Yes… a month!!). How could you possibly have any strength to go toe to toe with another boxer for the world title in that weakened state.

Additionally… his womanizing as a married man… a married man to a woman he says he’s always loved and cherished… is almost hard to fully comprehend… it was as unstoppable as his drinking and spending. There are numerous children out of wedlock… and the most amazing aspect of this book… at least to me… who has been a big boxing fan my whole life… and have gone to some of his fights… in addition to the astronomical amount of weight he would gain between fights… is how he threw millions and millions of dollars around… as if each dollar was radioactive… and would immediately kill him and his whole family. (I’m not sure he cared if it infected the sluts he constantly cheated on his wife with.)

Duran was bankrupt more than once… and his love-hate relationship with his native Panama… is the kind of thing “books-are-written-about”! From a penniless street urchin… to a World Boxing Champion that returns to Panama… and has more people greet his return (300,000 – 400,000) than turned out six weeks later for the Pope! Then after losses he felt Panama deserted him… and then after regaining a championship once again… the love chimes are playing loud and clear.

This book… like the great fighter… pulls no freakin punches. At times some of his bombast seems like it couldn’t quite be really true… but please read my footnote below:
