Santa through History

What a refreshing read this books provides. Taking the legend of Saint Nicholas down through history, weaving in stories of other famous historical figures and events, thereby creating a marvelous story of the life of the one we know as Santa Claus. This is all done in such a realistic way that you are left with a belief that Santa is for real. The book has twenty-four chapters leading it to be an ideal bedtime book to read to children or ourselves. After reading, I bought copies of the book for my son and daughter to use with their children.

A wonderful mixture of fantasy and history

I can't even imagine how long it must have taken Jeff Guinn to research and piece together this unusual book, but the hard work was worth it. "The Autobiography of Santa Claus" is part novel, part history, and something that anyone who loves Saint Nicholas will be grateful to read.
Guinn tracks down the origins of nearly all pieces of the Santa Claus legends and pieces them together, beginning with the birth of Nicholas in 280 A.D. He traces a life that lasts over 1700 years and explains how every well-known story of Santa Claus came to be, mixing in science with magic and throwing in actual historical figures to color the piece. (You'll never believe who some of Santa's "helpers" actually turn out to be.) He takes the character through the dark ages, through the Victorian era, mixes him in with European and American history and literature and finally brings it all together in the present day.
The book doesn't have much of a climax, but that's because it is written as an "autobiography," not a novel. The stories just stop because they've all been told... for now. That's part of the miracle -- the knowledge that Santa Claus will outlast us all and continue bringing his true gift, hope, to children all over the world long after you and I are gone. It's a wonderful book,and for people who love Christmas, I can't recommend it enough.

Good First Novel

The Temple Dancer / 0-312-32548-7

"The Temple Dancer" is a fine first novel for a promising new author, although I am surprised by the description's reference to a "proposed trilogy", given the rather 'final' nature of the epilogue. Though not without its faults, the novel is an engaging read and is worth a look, particularly for fans of the genre.

To give credit to the author, the story is engaging and moves along nicely, with the exposition as fascinating and well written as the action. Speed has also finely captured his female characters, which can be a difficult feat for a male author writing about such easily stereotyped characters as the Exotic Temple Dancer and Spoiled Heiress. Yet Speed's women resist stereotyping and show great resilience and strength of character in the turmoil that faces them. The male characters are, mostly, also very well done, with the 'tired old soldier' stereotype fleshed out nicely here as the men grapple with their own lives and whether they are brave enough to risk or even discard their futures for the women they have come to love and admire.

Not all of the characters are so thoroughly fleshed out, though. Speed's "unlikely villain" seems to be almost impossibly evil and conniving - carefully disposing of every member of his family over the course of many years in order to place himself closer to his family's fortune. In addition to these carefully manipulated murders, he seems to take sadistic delight in the torments the women suffer on their journey, and while it may be said that evil does not need a reason to be evil, it would be a nice inclusion to understand what motivates this man to be so cruel. Speed also relies heavily on misunderstandings, poor communication, and just plain stupidity of characters to advance the plot, which I hope he will trim to a minimum for his next novel.

(Example: When an old, frail man who is openly taking arsenic as 'medicine' dies of arsenic overdose, it seems unreasonable for *everyone* in the camp to immediately assume it was murder. It is just as likely that he took to much medicine or that his age and frailty couldn't handle the strain, and at least a few people should have voiced doubts as to the certainty of murder.)

This book is labeled historical fiction and Speed certainly takes care with the details and much of the overlay here seems genuine. A secret, powerful cabal of eunuchs seems to stretch the imagination slightly, and it also seems a powerful coincidence that the dancer - Maya - is carrying the long-lost treasure that they lost so many years ago, and an even further coincidence that the eunuch chosen to escort her to her new life is the very same one who lost the treasure so long ago! Nor is this incredible string of coincidences ever adequately explained, but rather it is just left as one of those mystical convergences that just happen. Although it did not detract much from my enjoyment of this story, I hope that the next novel from this author relies a little less on coincidence to drive the plot. In fact, I think a little less coincidence and more of the mostly superb character development could result in a fine novel indeed.

Exotic, exciting, enticing pageturner

What a story! The beach melted away as I was transported to 17th century India on the carpet of this extravagant story. Speed is quite a story teller--the section about the fall of the elephant still has my head spinning--and is the perfect antidote for the end of summer doldrums. One warning, Speed takes a few dozen pages to get warmed up, set the stage, introduce the characters, but then his tale takes off like a rocket. Interlaced with this intricate story is a lot of historical and cultural detail, which Speed feeds you like a sweet ice between courses--tastes great, complements the next dish, and makes you feel virtuous because it doesn't have any fat.

Crowd-pleasing beauty...with serious muscle.

Usually, when faced with a work of fiction, there's a certain point, somewhere in the middle, that you can point to and say, "Now THIS is where the plot really starts to thicken." Even a great page-turner like the Da Vinci Code will have a storyline that becomes quite elaborate and developed within the first 150 pages and fizzles out at the end.

In the case of The Temple Dancer, the plot thickens on page 5, doubles in on itself by page 50, and develops into a superlatively loopy conundrum by the middle of the book. If the plot were any thicker, the book would certainly implode, which would be a shame because nobody would get to read it then.

Mr. Speed keeps the whole thing chugging along by killing off characters unexpectedly, thus creating opportunities to insert yet more action. This is exactly the sort of kinetic artistry that defines blockbuster adventure stories, and the author is clearly a master at his craft. With a little effort spent on keeping the interlocking story lines straight (the map and list of characters help), the reader can remain engaged until the very last page. Which, as it happens, contains an astonishing plot twist.

I am eagerly awaiting the second volume of this trilogy, to find out what happens next.

a nice introduction for mechanical engineers

Provides a thorough introduction to the field in a matter that is readily accessible for undergraduate mechanical engineers. The most complex chapter on viscoelastic theory is well-explained, and makes only a modest use of calculus. Discusses all the basics (creep, relaxation, temperature, load history, etc.) The Chapters are as follows:

1) Structure of the molecule
2) Structure of polymeric solids
3) The elastic properties of rubber
4) Viscoelasticity
5) Yield and fracture
6) Reinforced polymers
7) Forming
8) Design

For those interested in the computer modeling of the dynamic behavior of viscoelastic solids, there is another excellent book that delves more deeply (and requires a bit more math). "Mechanical Response of Polymers" by Wineman & Rajagopal will get you where you want to go when it comes to predicting the effects of time, temperature, and loading history. Also very accessible, although probably more suited to the graduate level.

My Review:
Wow...my first MUST-READ of 2016! This book was so good...and so unexpected.

But be warned...neither of these guys are good hero material when the book begins. In fact, that first chapter or so, I was really wondering if I would be able to keep reading. Tyler has a girlfriend who treats him AWFUL, but he sticks with her because she's a hot lay. Yeah...UGH! Serious...ugh. Then Chris is a drugged out, diva rockstar who overdoses and dies. See...I told you. When the book begins I didn't want either one of these guys to find their happy. They definitely weren't what I would consider good hero material.

But then the story went on and I fell in love with them as they both grew and evolved and cried as I realized there was no way this book could end happily. Um, did you catch that one of them is a ghost? Yeah, pretty much impossible. BUT...wow, Lauren Sattersby manages a perfect ending that made me so happy.

But before that they have to learn how to live together. Because Chris can't get more then 20 feet away from Tyler...ever. So they are together 24/7...and no one else can see or sense Chris, which causes a lot of difficulties for Tyler. There's just something a little bit crazy about having whole conversations with people that aren't really there. But then they begin to bond over things like Supernatural. :)

There were so many scenes that had me laughing out loud throughout the book and then by the end, I was literally sobbing with tears running down my cheeks. The story is beautiful and I truly loved it. This also appears to be Lauren Sattersby's first novel. Can I just say, "Wow!" She has an incredible writing future in front of her because I am a definite new fan.

If the story appeals, go buy it. It's just as good (or actually even better) than the story description makes it sound. Definitely an early contender for my top ten list for the year.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review, but I am preordering a print copy of it for my keeper shelf. Because I can guarantee you that this will be a book that I will re-read over and over again.

Lauren Sattersby nailed it with her debut book!

Rock N Soul starts out with Tyler searching all over Boston for red seedless grapes. Which seemed somewhat odd until you realize it’s the middle of the night, he’s a bellboy in a respectable hotel and there’s a rock star involved. Tyler finds the grapes, rushes back to the hotel and heads to the room to deliver the meal. Only when he gets to the room he finds the rock star, Chris Raiden, dead of an overdose, stiffing him on the tip. Tyler’s girlfriend, who is an avid fan of the band, blames Tyler and promptly dumps him. The next time Tyler goes into the hotel room, he stumbles across Chris’ ring, promptly puts it on and POOF Chris appears and now is haunting Tyler. Not the room or location like a normal ghost, but Tyler himself. Everywhere Tyler goes Chris has to go. After seeking help, they determine Chris has unfinished business that he needs to deal with. To get rid of Chris, Tyler agrees to help him out.

I’m not always a fan of ghost romances. I like my stories to have HEAs usually the live half of the romantic couple ends up dying so they can be together. Really, how do you call that a HEA? However, I found the blurb for Rock N Soul to be appealing. Emo-narcissist rock star ghost attached a bellhop who he stiffed tipping because he died? Huh??? Yes very interesting indeed. So I grabbed Lauren Sattersby’s debut book, Rock N Soul, and settle in for a read. What a surprise!

The story itself was very entertaining. Dead rock star with unfinished business haunts a bellhop who ends up helping him settle his business, and they end up falling in love. Sounds corny but actually it worked out very well. There was no instant friends/lovers here. They were both less than thrilled to find themselves stuck with each other. The progression to friends was a nice gradual one sometimes even on the comical side. I didn’t find Chris to be a complete jerk nor did I find Tyler to be a complete loser. Both had very likable layers and as they evolved into eventually being as a couple you can see them grown as people. The secondaries characters were added bonuses and, with the exception of Carmen, I enjoyed all of them. As for Carmen, two thumbs up to Eric and the ultimate revenge! LOL!!!!

Lauren Sattersby really nailed it with her debut book, Rock N Soul. Comedy, romance, laughter and tears, I ran the whole gambit of emotions. I wasn’t too sure how she was going to pull off a HEA with this story but what she came up with definitely gives me hope there are HEAs to be found in ghost romances. This book is certainly worth the read. I look for to reading more books by Ms. Sattersby!

Tyler is adrift as a bellboy in a hotel when he runs into Chris – an emo rock-star who demands some grapes. After running around trying to find them he returns to find Chris dead of an overdose. After finding and wearing Chris’ ring, he finds that he – HIMSELF – is haunted by Chris.

Chris has unfinished business – don’t we all! – and demands that Tyler help him accomplish this.

Though the two start out as mostly enemies – Tyler’s girl leaves him when she accuses him of “letting” Chris (her idol) die – and Chris is narcissitic enough not to understand why Tyler isn’t more happy to help him – they end up developing a deep relationship that helps them both find more meaning in – ironically – life.

Eventually the story comes to it’s climax as Chris finishes his business on earth and things look like they’ll need to change again, the only question is how.

First, let me say that for a debut novel – or any freakin’ novel – this was amazingly well written. I was absolutely intrigued by the blurb and found the end result to be full of ALL the emotions: laughter, tears, anger, frustration, happiness, and love.

I loved the MCs and found their personal growth to be very touching.

I’m not a huge “ghost” fan – it’s hard to reconcile the whole “dead” thing with “happy ever after”, but I’ve read some books that did this very well (ie Motel. Pool by Kim Fielding) and the blurb hooked me.

In the end there were way more things that worked for me than not.

Things that worked for me: The writing is excellent. Very well developed characters. Intriguing plot line. “Believable” conversion of ghost into lover (and HEA). Great dialog. Hot smexy scenes. Loads of feels. Tons of funny/punny moments.

Only a few things that didn’t work for me: While I appreciated the slow burn, it was already a painful book to read – the guy is dead and we know it and without an absolutely huge magic wand or creepy zombie thing , he will remain dead – so I didn’t need MORE pain – so I didn’t like seeing the hurt on Chris’ face with the trials as Tyler got involved with other men and women. Limiting this would also help to shorten it a bit as it is fairly long and I’m not sure it needs to be this long. For example, there is a bit at the beginning that began to drag where the two are “learning” about each other but reluctant to share their sexuality and dancing around the subject that I think could have been shortened.

Those little niggles took this from a VERY SOLID 5 star read to a 4.5 star for me, but it’s really a great book and I do highly recommend it.

About the Author
Jebediah Pavleas is a graduate student in the Computer Science and Software Engineering program at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB). He received a Bachelor of Science in 2012 and was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Medal for his class. During his time as an undergraduate he took a great interest in both computer graphics and games. His projects included an interactive math application that utilizes Microsoft’s Kinect sensor to teach algebra, a 2D role-playing game designed to teach students introductory programming concepts, and a website where students can compete in various mini-games to control checkpoints around campus. Relating to these projects, he coauthored publications in IEEE Computers and The Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges (CCSC). When not working towards his graduate degree, he enjoys designing, building, and playing games of all kinds as well as adapting technology for improved accessibility. A university student in computer science, he is interested in working as a game programmer, focusing on accessibility.
