An excellent book to ace wall street quant interviews

What I like most about this book is that it has detailed step by step solutions to the many many real world interview questions included in it. It explains how to approach common (and many not so common) problems --from analyzing the problem, breaking it down to its parts, to arriving at a good answer.It changes the way one thinks rather than provide mechanical canned answers.. Unlike a few other books that have been in the market this one has greater breadth and depth.I'd recommend the book to both job seekers and interviewers.

Lots of quant interview questions and detailed solutions!

Anyone who's been to a quant finance interview knows how difficult some of the analytical and technical questions can be. I recently bought this book (thank you, Amazon Prime!) to prepare for an upcoming interview, and was really impressed by the 200+ questions the author has collected as well as provided detailed solutions for. I've definitely seen some of the questions in real before, so I believe the author when he says these are real-world questions. This is a valuable guide for anyone going into quant interviews. If you're a newbie to the quant job market, this book goes well with another book, written by this book's editor, called Starting Your Career as a Wall Street Quant: A Practical, No-BS Guide to Getting a Job in Quantitative Finance and Launching a Lucrative Career which is more about general advice and tips.

A Fast Read

A fast read. A good first book for Greg Scott. It gave me a much better understanding on the 'Bullseye" breach (counting myself as one of its millions of victims). There are parts of the book where you can definitely tell it was written by a "rookie" author (no disrespect intended), but overall, Mr. Scott keeps the story moving and interesting. Being in the IT / Information Security field myself, I recognized many of the issues we face in the industry, especially the attitudes from IT and business executives that look at security as a burden and not an absolute necessity. I look forward to Mr. Scott's future work.

I loved this book and you will too!

Bullseye Breach is a fictionalization of the recent security lapses at major retailers and a plan for how to fight back against such breaches. The IT side of this book is right on. For starters, the method used by the bad guys to hack into the retailer highlights the role of social engineering. Access to Bullseye's intranet is through a simple password gleaned from a third-party vendor via "phishing" --- the technique hackers use to get someone to click on a link in an email and/or download something. The hackers dress up the link so the person being targeted ignores any security warnings from the browser or operating system. A similar technique is also used in the book to gain administrator passwords for the retailer's intranet. The message is clear and can't be stressed enough: know your sources. Don't click on or download from anyone you're not 110% sure of. And, don't ignore security warnings from your antivirus program or operating system.

Beyond a blueprint for how the recent credit-card scams might have happened and how to prevent or deal with the hacking, Bullseye Breach is a great read. There are many characters, but each is idiosyncratic enough to be memorable in their own right. The bad guys are plausible and unfortunate. The main hero is adorable, with his loud sweater and inappropriate footwear. (You can just see this nerdy man in action.) Scott's prose is fluid and easy to read, gently propelling the reader onward through the twists and turns of the breach and resolution. I loved this book, and you will too!

I am just over 1/2 way through the ebook (55% - just (re-)read the sample "Regina").
Sad to say, some of the characters came out a little 'caricatured' and 'sterotypical' - specifically the "bad russian mobster" and his 'favourite' nephew. While I found myself visualising these people, they were more like a '1D' representation.
I do appreciate the tech-side (being more than a little paranoid and in ITSec myself), but some of the characterisations could have done with some some more polish.
I will continue reading until I finish (I bought it this morning, should be done sometime tomorrow).
It is a page-swiper (it is an ebook :)
I will admit, parts of it remind me of Clifford Stoll's classic "The Cuckoo's Egg" - which is a "good thing" :)

Is there in inherent wisdom to mankind passed on via threads of culture, or do we have to break our foreheads anew each time? And what about numbers? Does math matter? What is one man? What are two? Three? What about seven? Ten? Three thousand? Does the dynamic of society change simply because instead of a few, there are too many of us? And what is redemption? Is this a trick, God's apocalyptic finger mocking us? My head swirls with a thousand more questions after reading this, and the beauty of the answer is in the words of one of the characters: I don't know. We don't know. None of us know. We're afraid of this, we like to pretend, hold smart long talks about everything under the sun, and yet, it's very simple. We don't know.

I've read a lot of Stephen King's books. I would say, most of them, starting from when I was 16 (when I discovered him), and, well, without spilling my personal story here, culminating in The Stand, which I should've read a long time ago, but somehow never found the time. And, I think it's the best of his that I ever read. The characters are so beautifully flawed, you want to cry. That's what makes them real. Usually I write up a summary of the book in my reviews, but I don't even know where to begin, there are so many overlapping stories here…it's about humanity. Against the background of a sterile post-apocalyptic vista, with a bit of horror ("His face was a cratered red soup", anyone?) and a bit of fantasy, just the right mix. I'll try to summarize it for you. So. The world is swept by mutated flu "Captain Trips". It's a pandemic. Most people die, some live. Some more of those few die of stupid causes, later. Now, those few who stay alive see dreams. There are two kinds, of an old woman, Mother Abagail, and of the dark man, Randall Flagg. With our spilling too much beans here, you can guess. The world (or whatever remained of it) splits in two. Who will win? You can guess this too. But how? Oh, this is what the book is about. The stand. Will you take a stand for what you believe in? And, to twist you even more, are they all doomed? No matter what the outcome, what about the babies? The babies that will be born into the world, will they be immune to Captain Trips? Yes? No?

I think it took me 2 months to read this book, and I'm a relatively fast reader, but I had to stop, and think, and bite my lip. A lot. You will probably too, but you must read it. Set time aside for it. It's a masterpiece.

P.S.: Oh, and as a note, I haven't read the original version, I read only this one, the uncut one. I don't know how they compare, apart from the fact that 1980's have been modified to 1990's, etc. Just so you know.

Epic Masterpiece

The Stand is one of Stephen King's most popular and highest-rated books, and with good reason. It is an amazing and epic story, and in typical Stephen King style, there is so much interesting back-story that you become invested in the characters and plot, and you will not want to put it down. It is over a thousand pages long, but even so, I wished it would never end. The only reason I did not give it five stars is due to a recurring flaw in King's style, which is, in researching for a book, he will wonder what the word is for some rare thing, find JUST THE RIGHT WORD, and then over-use that word throughout the book, and subsequent books. So, a word that I have never heard in my entire life, now suddenly I am reading eleven times in one book. This book must have been written before he found the words "knee-hole" and "isinglass", though, because those are in almost every book he writes. Even so, this book is a masterpiece.

Stephen King at his best.

King in his prime. Many King fans consider this his best work and I am among them. Set in a post apocalyptic America in the beginnings and aftermath of a superflu epidemic, this is ultimately a tale of a showdown between good an evil on a very grand scale. This version contains two updates from the original 1970's version. The first in the 1980's replaced several pages of prose that were edited out for the sake of brevity in the original printing, They don't make the novel any better or worse, but for true King fans like me, more pages equals more fun and the changes were welcome. (Spoiler Alert!!!) The only thing that revision took away from the original book was the very poignant ending with Frannie and Stu watching Peter play in Mother Abigail's dooryard, and tacked on a very silly epilogue involving the fate of the Walkin' Dude. This also takes away the ultimate showdown aspect that is the reason for the book. The second revision seemed unnecessary to me, but didn't detract from the book... in the 1990's the book was updated with cultural references that included things King couldn't have foreseen between writing the book in the 70's and today. Sure. Why not? This is a wonderful novel I reread over and over. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Don't waste your money :-(

Oh dear. Sadly I must tell you that this book is a complete waste of money, time .... and paper. There's a trend at the moment where ill-advised, unqualified, naïve, self-aggrandising and self-professed experts produce meaningless rubbish like this book as a ruse for their own hoped-for get-rich-quick scheme. Luckily for them, as long as your editor comes up with a catchy title, and your graphic designer comes up with a catchy cover-design, there's a gazillion lemmings out there who will buy the book. Some will even try to read it. And that's when the authors' laughable combination of arrogance and ignorance gets revealed. Simple and superficial solutions don't solve deep and complex problems. They make matters worse. As a ninth generation "White African" who works in the pro-poor economic development industry, I would encourage the authors to come and do what I do for a few years. Then maybe they can write a sequel. Maybe they can call it "Why we fail to understand why nations fail". PS. I've given this book a one star rating because Amazon forces you to apply a rating. Unfortunately Amazon doesn't give you rating options on the minus side of the scale. But if they did, I would rate this book Minus 10.

Outstanding book

I thought this was an outstanding book. It is organized in a way that logically walks you through the rationale behind picking the appropriate statistical tool for your type of data. It is comprehensive in covering the different situations you'll encounter whether you're designing your own study or reading someone else's. The mathematics are presented in an easy to understand format striking just the right balance of providing the important concepts without getting bogged down in minute details. It utilizes practical examples and references from the medical literature that you'll be comfortable applying day one to that journal laying on your desk. Whether you're starting out as a student or have been in practice for years and want a refresher, this text should be on your shelf.

Not for Yosemite users.

I bought this book just before my Mac died. I went out and got an new computer w/ Yosemite installed. Despite a copyright date of 2015, the book was actually released in mid-2014, as I found out later. Altho' the book's intro states it was written on Maverick, it says you may use it with Maverick (10.9) or Yosemite (10.0). Well, that isn't the case; by p.17 the illustrations (which are so poorly printed, it's hard to make out detail) do not match up. Even poking around in the usually intuitive Apple Apps lead me down blind alleys (or created messes.)

I'm surprised at the positive reviews, not because of my personal experience, but of how poorly it's written. Some authors suffer from explaining their subject so many times they can get sloppy, lazy, or just take readers' knowledge of the subject for granted. Don't get me wrong—I have used Apple Pro Training Series Books w/ much success before. I guess like all things these days, updates are hard to keep up with.

Fabulous guided tour of everything you need to know to use GarageBand

OK, I have to confess that I have been intimidated for years by GarageBand. In recent months I succeeded, through the help of some YouTube videos, in making a simple two-track recording, but I was still completely intimidated and afraid to even touch most of the controls. Then I bought Mary Plummer's book. She starts by walking you through the download of all the resources you'll be working with to complete the book's projects, and continues with very detailed explanations and screen shots as you dive right into recording, editing, working with loops, patches, software instruments, midi, and so much more. No need to be intimidated, and if you do something unintended, you can always hit Command-Z! Thanks for a great book that has freed me to have fun with the amazing recording studio that has been lurking in my laptop.

I think this book is for earlier versions of GarageBand that I don't have. I have 10.1. Some things that are referred to are not there. Other things that are referred to don't work. I was able to work around some things but other things I was not.

David E. Root is an Agilent Research Fellow at Agilent Technologies. He co-led the Agilent research and technical development of X-parameters through its commercialization. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and co-editor of Nonlinear Transistor Model Parameter Extraction Techniques (2011).

Jan Verspecht is a Master Research Engineer at Agilent Technologies. He invented X-parameters in 1996 and is a Fellow of the IEEE.
