About the Author
Dr. Howard Bandy has both the formal education and practical experience required to write this book. He has degrees in mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. He was a university professor of computer science and mathematics, and university dean. He began research and application of modeling, simulation, statistics, and artificial intelligence while in graduate school. He is the designer and programmer of a commercially successful computer program to time entries and exits. He was a senior research analyst for a Commodity Trading Advisory firm, where he held a Series 3 license. He is a regular speaker at international conferences, author of five books related to the design, analysis, and management of trading systems. And a consultant to trading companies and individuals.

A major contribution to the theory, understanding and practice of Quantitative Technical Analysis

I discovered Dr Howard Bandy’s “Quantitative Trading Systems” using Dr Google in 2008 while I was looking for some support while learning Amibroker, the trading toolbox. Over the previous 16 years I had moved my financial market trading from fundamental to technical and then from general technical to something more mechanical involving back testing, monte-carlo and risk analysis. This reflected my dual experiences in corporate life, I had many years in Information Technology (Operations Research, Analysis, and Programming) and also years in Management Accounting. My earlier trading platforms were not adequate for my growing focus – I needed something faster and more comprehensive and my software reviews caused me to select Amibroker. Dr Bandy’s first book provided a great deal of excellent Amibroker sample code – a really good starting place.

However, I quickly realised that the book was far more than this. It presented the most logical framework for understanding financial markets, trading models and trading systems that I had yet seen. Perhaps it arrived at a time when I knew enough, and had enough experience, to know what I was looking for – even if it was not the purpose of my original internet search! Shortly after reading the book I flew from Australia to Las Vegas to attend a two-day seminar delivered by Howard – it did not disappoint. The book and the logic models presented so clearly within, have stood the test of time and have become an integral part of my trading approaches.

Since 2008 I have read and re-read “Quantitative Trading Systems” many times, I regularly come across something I may have let slip, or gain a new insight. I still extract snippets of code. The book covers a very broad range of subjects, it looks at the clear advantages of Quantitative Analysis over both traditional Technical Analysis and Fundamental Analysis. It demonstrated how statistical analysis, computer code and robust intellectual “models” can effectively “test” trading ideas and then quantify both potential profit and risk. Many different trading approaches are both described, examined and tested. Amibroker code is provided so you can run the tests yourself on current data, nothing is hidden, nothing assumed.

In Dr Bandy's later books, particular areas in this book are examined in greater detail. Again, in later books there are some more sophisticated approaches to issues addressed in this book. This results in different methods being proposed particularly for position sizing. This book however, is still the ideal starting point for some-one wanting a broad grounding in the theory (logical framework) and practice of trading the financial markets, particularly if you are moving from traditional technical methodologies or fundamental analysis. It is especially useful if you intend to make use of the code provided for use in Amibroker (or similar after translation).

Dr Howard Bandy is new to Amazon but I (along with others) have been following his work closely since 2008. Howard’s work has revolutionised my trading. I have been an active trader, managing family funds for more than 20 years. I am a long term member, office bearer and former National President of the Australian Technical Analyst Association (ATAA) and also a director of IFTA. Over the years I have been a keen student in the field of Technical Analysis and have consumed many books on the subject. Some of my past favoured authors have included David Aronson, Ralph Vince, Larry Connors, Mark Jurik, Perry Kaufman, Benoit Mandelbrot, Nassim Taleb, John Bollinger, Thomas Stridesman and Katz & McCormick.

From my personal trading experience I strongly recommend “Quantitative Trading Systems”, along with Dr Bandy’s later books, to any financial market trader interested in fully understanding and developing competent quantitative trading systems.

The one book that should be in every serious trader's library

This book is quite simply the definitive guide to using a quantitative approach to trading and investing in the financial markets. Geared towards a statistical analysis of trading ideas to determine their suitability and reliability, this book is a far cry from traditional technical analysis books full of chart patterns and baseless claims. Rather Bandy's guide breaks his approach into bite-size chunks, with easy to understand detail, including actual coding examples that can be applied using the popular Amibroker software. By the end of the book you will have a thorough understanding of how to take your own trading ideas through design, build and test, to be able to uncover the historic metrics for them.

I discovered this book a number of years ago and it quite literally changed my trading approach overnight. If I had to cite one book which turned me into a consistently profitable trader, it would be this one. I thoroughly recommend it both to beginners and seasoned campaigners alike.

Useful Book For Experienced Trading System Developers Who Are Developing Their First Trading System In Amibroker

This was a hard book for me to rate. On one hand, I thought this book covered quite a bit of ground on trading systems and provided a good introduction to AmiBroker. On the other hand, with a nebulous title like "Quantitative Trading Systems" and a back cover that listed topics ranging from principles of system design and testing to Monte Carlo analysis I thought this book covered many key concepts without much depth (e.g. risk management, position sizing). In the end, I thought this book was more of an introduction to AmiBroker with some pearls of wisdom sprinkled in than a general trading system development book that happened to choose AmiBroker to illustrate points. I was seeking the latter.

I appreciated the discussions on how to properly test systems and how to use basic statistics to determine if my trading systems were broken. And I did download AmiBroker and code a few examples from the book and they did work, so no dings for providing broken code. But the discussion of trend following systems was disappointing to put it mildly. The (light) discussion of position sizing was buried in the Monte Carlo section where Dr Bandy explains position sizing requires a lot of thought and testing (and pretty much leaves it at that). Also, this book pretty much avoids the topic of option trading even as a simple substitute for trading the underlying (probably because AmiBroker doesn't natively support it). And unfortunately, after I finished reading the book and wanted to go back to revisit some topics Dr. Bandy brushed on, I couldn't find references to them in the index.

Overall, I would recommend this book to people who already have some experience developing trading systems and who want to quickly port over their work to AmiBroker.

This book must have been copied and rebound. The code that is used to access the online material usually found with these books was not there, so I could not access the free lessons. Still a great book, but definitely not worth the price since I did not receive all that it offers if I bought it straight from the seller or from a book store.

International Law vs. Sharia

Sharia, Muslim States and International Human Rights Treaty Obligations: A Comparative Study" by Nisrine Abiad, (2008), 240 pgs. Of the 240 pages, only 75% (175 pages) pertain to the author's analysis of various topics - with 5% for an Appendix, and the 20% balance being the bibliography [no index!]. Hopefully, the "Look Inside" display option is available. Otherwise, the chapter topics are: (1a) The substance of Sharia and its relation to the concept of human rights [criminal law, marriage, freedom of religion, and women's legal rights]; (1b) The status of Islamic law within the legal systems of Muslim states [Lebanon, Turkey Iran, Pakistan, Bahrain, Egypt, Malaysia]; (2) The direct influence & relative impact of Sharia on the Ratification of major international human-rights treaties], (3a) The impact of Sharia on the implementation of human-rights standards into domestic practice, (3b) The implementation of legislative reforms within the framework of the Sharia [the moudawana of Morocco, divorce in Egypt, polygamy in Tunisia, Pakistan's rape law], & (4) The role of the judiciary in the application of human-rights norms [in Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Morocco, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Turkey]. Not being an international-law attorney, I cannot attest to the quality of this author's legal analysis. By reading the daily newspapers, it seems to be an oxymoron to equate `human rights' and `international law' (let alone `law') to many of the countries that the author discusses. The author did note: "An examination of a cross-section of Muslim States reveals that the same types of violations occur across the spectrum, despite the differences in their treatment of Sharia within the hierarchy of norms" (xvii). This female author, an attorney, writes well in a nice, tight style: identifies and discusses a topic, and cites specific references to the Quran, hadith, and legal books. She goes into detail in discussing many types of Bedouin (pre-Muhammad) marriage norms and terminology, how Islam `improved' the lot of women, and while she refers to the major Islamic `schools of law' -- she does not really detail their differences in too much detail. The author discusses various Islamic `hadd' offenses: qadhf (unlawful sexual intercourse), wine (sharb al-khamr), apostasy (ridda). The author contends: "The penalties of flogging, capital punishment, death by stoning, and amputation are contrary to international law principles" (27). At times it seems that the author is using somewhat of a `shotgun' approach in discussing some topic, by noting some `international law' and detailing all-too-briefly how it might apply to some Muslim country. The author notes the problem as to how some international law might apply to some Muslim country that holds reservations as to how such laws will be applied: "Saudi Arabia limits its engagement to the CRC by providing that it enters `reservations with respect to all such articles as are in conflict with the provisions of Islamic law'....the Kingdom is not under obligation to observe the contradictory terms of the convention" (70). The author discusses `rape law' in Iran and Pakistan, but this reader was left with the feeling that those countries legal defenses of women run counter to what one reads in current newspapers with women being flogged for reporting that they were raped - and thereby admitting that they had engaged in what the state considers to be `unlawful sex' and are therefore punished for engaging in sex outside of marriage. The author makes just a passing reference to Israel: "A recurrent reservation found in international treaties signed by Muslim States, refers generally to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict...[but] is not in any way founded on Sharia...it is a political consideration" (83). A book more for `food for thought' than one leading to any major conclusions about the relevance as to how International Law is applied in Islamic countries.

One of the best arrhythmia books around!

If you've read Garcia and Holtz's The Art of Interpretation, you'll find yourself right at home with this book. While not broken down by skill level, it instead focuses on the general classes of arrhythmias. The structure of this book is more like a workbook, guiding you through the various classes of arrhythmias, completing each chapter with a short test. At the end of the book is a full blown rhythm test, not unlike those seen in Paramedic school.

If you work your way through this book and Garcia's companion 12-Lead book, you will quickly master electrocardiography. I highly recommend this book for all levels of providers both prehospital and inhospital.

A good book for learning cardiology

This book is a good buy for somebody who wants to learn about cardiology with having very little, if any experience with it. In the beginning it assumes that you already understand the basic anatomy of the cardiovascular system, but lightly reviews it anyways. If you're looking to fully learn the cardiovascular system, this book won't do that for you. It lightly covers some of the key points to get you through cardiology and that's about it. For the paramedic student, it provides what you will need to know. It does however, cover the electrical system of the heart very well. At first I thought the way the book was written was a little difficult. As you read it, it's reading as if there is a person sitting there talking to you about the topic. This was a little unconventional to me and initially it confused me a little bit on some topics, however, later in the book it makes things a lot easier to understand at time. I'm not all the way through the book yet but so far the information is very good and very detailed. Where most books will describe what the electrical impulses of the heart are doing, this book will compare it to something else to make it easier. That right there is what made many topics throughout cardiology clear to me. If you're looking for just a basic review on cardiology this is a great book to purhcase. It gives the paramedic student everything they need to know about cardiology, and then a little extra. It does keep referring to the next book in the series about 12-lead ECGs, however, I don't feel the need to purchase it as a paramedic student. This book includes plenty of practice strips where it makes you break down and measure out the rhythm to determine what it is and then gives you the answers later in the book and explains why the answers are what they are. All in all I think this is a great book. It has a unique way of explaining the topics and it works very well. I initially reviewed this book to be a 4 out of 5. I have since come back to up it to a perfect score because as I got further and further into the book, the book did a better and better job of explaining everything.

The definitive guide for pre-2000 minor league sets. No other published book comes close.

Despite being listed as the "Premier Edition", it is, in fact, the ONLY edition. That said, it is simply the most comprehensive reference book for minor league baseball cards through early 2000. In no other book will you find this many minor league sets listed in their entirety. Even for anyone picking up later editions of the larger Standard Catalog, this volume is still essential, as the later, larger books eliminate the complete checklists for newer sets in favor of simply listed the set names and card quantities per set.

It is a crime against the hobby that there was never a later edition of this work published, but I understand the economics involved and the extremely narrow target audience. Despite Beckett's efforts in their online price guide database, there are STILL sets listed in this book that Beckett does not acknowledge, and this book is 14 years old. I still use this book on a frequent basis.

Sports Collectors Digest follows up their 1,664-page "Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards" with another informative price guide, this 480-page guide specifically covers minor league cards. SCD has done their homework with this guide as well, publishing more information on more sets than any other price guides available. I highly recommend this book!

I collect all of the Red Sox minor league teams, and this book helped me identify all of those team sets, plus provided a name-by-name breakdown of players on all of the prospects and all-star sets. If you are a team collector, you will love this book!

A good overview of US Health Care and very readable, but somewhat dry

I hope to give a somewhat objective review of this book, having actually read it. When writing this there was only one review of this book that gives a more-than-a-little skewed overview(and the author obviously only skimmed through the table of contents rather than reading its content). In this review I will briefly discuss the books content and hopefully guide some potential purchasers to know whether this is the book they are looking for.

Its primary purpose is to provide an overview of the United States health care system. Additionally, it brings out some of the policy issues that the system is facing and as some of the history that led the system to where it is today.

Overall, I would say it succeeds at its first objective. While it doesn't get into all the specifics of the industry, it at least explains the major aspects of most of the health care system's components. If you want the nuances of a particular issue, you'll have to go to a different book or head to the academic literature. If you just want a basic idea of how the US health system functions, then this gives a decent overview.

The book struggles a bit more with the policy and history aspect. Anybody that has spent much time working in health policy knows that the historical events, the policy decisions and the unplanned results of legislation are so convoluted that it is impossible to cover them all in one book, let alone in just a few sections in one book. That said, if you, are starting from square one in regards to health policy and health care history, this does give you a very brief introduction, though the policy discussions are not as well-covered as the overview of the system as a whole.

One other thing to keep in mind is that this was published shortly after the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was passed and does not have a comprehensive summary of the provisions of that bill. It does mention some of what the bill does, but it does not, by any means, break it down. If your goal is to imagine what the health care system is going to look like in the future based on the ACA, choose a different book.

In terms of writing, the book is very readable with clear prose and generally understandable descriptions, though it is somewhat dry. It is not a presentation of changes in the future or solutions for how the health care system should change, but a summary of what it is right now. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who just wants to learn how the American health system's pieces fit together. Compared to other health system overviews I would recommend this book due to its readability.

Contrary to the first review of this book, it is not a left-wing socialist glorification health care. It is a relatively objective overview that is ideal for people who really don't understand what the health care system consists of. While it does discuss different payment models (including socialized systems like the UK and national insurance systems like Canada (which is not socialized)) it does not advocate for them. After all, this is a descriptive, somewhat dull, textbook, not a political treatise.

Good introduction to the American health care system

The book is a good basic introduction to the American health care system. If you are doing advanced health policy research this book is not for you. If you are teaching a class for undergraduates (or are someone who wants to know about 'nuts and bolts' issues) this would be perfect. For what it does (basic intro), it does well but do not look for sophisticated analysis here.

Simply outstanding as an introduction to healthcare.

Almost every class has a textbook, and almost every professor assures his or her students that his or class' particular textbook is worth buying. Rarely is this true. In the case of Shi & Singh's book, though, I actually agree.

I bought this book for the first course that I took on the U.S. healthcare system. I was skeptical but Shi & Singh quickly won me over with their excellent writing, which presents the material in quick, readable fashion and stays relevent and fresh throughout.

Some might see "bias" here, because the authors are quite clear from the start that the U.S. healthcare "system"--I use the quotes because one thing that this text makes clear is that America has no system at all--is fundamentally flawed. To me, that is not bias, because it is a point on which virtually everyone agrees. Moreover, while Shi & Singh do advocate for the creation of a true system, they do not limit their approach to one model. It is when one contrasts Singapore's true-market model with Britain's pure-national model that one comes to grasp how bizarre and nonsensical the American approach to healthcare really is, a solution that satisfies no one and does little if anything efficiently from either a market or a social perspective.

I came to Amazon.com today to sell back my books from this semester. The others have been posted. Shi & Singh's Delivering Health Care, however, is a rare example of a text that will be staying on my shelf. I recommend this book to everyone interested in understanding healthcare in America.

By reading this book I have understood about what are binary options and how it works, how to weight risk versus rewards, popular indicators, and much more. It opened my eyes to the basis of binary option. It also taught me about the benefit of trading through binary option. I am very happy with the knowledge i got from this book as i have learned a new way of passive earning. With the tips i got from this book i can be able to trade effectively without the fear of losing so much money

Striking.

Literally true! You get what you want in terms of knowledge and information. The author self is is knowledgeable about Binary Options which for me is a plus and convincing, you get my point right? What their some author that talks about a certain topic but doesn't truly understand what does it men and happy to say that this book or author is not like that. Apart from the info's you get, the approach itself is striking. It has this approach that fells like a pro and I'm happy with it.

Binary trading? there's no other option than to get this book

I didn't really understand Binary Options before and I am not even interested to learn what it is. Until recently, when my friend told me about her Binary trading went out, I was curious and got interested to learn about it. I bought this book to learn what Binary trading is and I was not disappointed, because this book have all the details and info you need about Binary options and what are some tips and techniques you can use to ensure success. However, it was more clear in this book that you should plan and be quick to analyze things around.

If you are like me who were not interested about Binary Options before, but was now interested, then you have to get this book and be amazed on how Binary trading works.
