A must read biography for anyone wishing to understand Japanese postwar politics
By Joe6Pack
Yoshida was a fascinating character. As a classical colonialist of the British school he did not as a Japanese consul mind at all Japanese encrouchement upon China (after all the Western powers all did the same), but what he did mind was conflict with the UK and US over spheres of influence there, which he desperately tried to avoid. The Brits tried to give him a fair hearing in order to seek compromise with Japan, since they did not fight war at two fronts. But then it increasingly became clear that Yoshida had become a free lancer without authority to talk on behalf of Tokyo. Dismissed into retirement by MoFA he was soon ignored ignomiously. He continued to plot cautiously for peace negotiations (for which the Allies were unavailable) and then for surrender, until the Kempetai got wind of this and briefly threw him into jail. This qualification endeared him to MacArthur and SCAP to make him postwar PM of Japan, a task which he fulfilled against all odds twice. This is a first rate, though fairly critical biography of the man, his times and his ideas (portrayed as reactionary, but fine with me).
Since for his inexisting powerbase in the conservative camp Yoshida recruited lots of former elite bureaucrats, he set up the basis for these "bureaucratic" factions which continue to this day to be one of the more reliable and consistent mainstays within the ruling LDP. Needless to say that the book is well written, expertly researched and a pleasure to read.

Testing Object-Oriented Systems: Models, Patterns, and Tools, by Robert V. Binder

More than ever, mission-critical and business-critical applications depend on object-oriented (OO) software. Testing techniques tailored to the unique challenges of OO technology are necessary to achieve high reliability and quality. Testing Object-Oriented Systems: Models, Patterns, and Tools is an authoritative guide to designing and automating test suites for OO applications. This comprehensive book explains why testing must be model-based and provides in-depth coverage of techniques to develop testable models from state machines, combinational logic, and the Unified Modeling Language (UML). It introduces the test design pattern and presents 37 patterns that explain how to design responsibility-based test suites, how to tailor integration and regression testing for OO code, how to test reusable components and frameworks, and how to develop highly effective test suites from use cases. Effective testing must be automated and must leverage object technology. The author describes how to design and code specification-based assertions to offset testability losses due to inheritance and polymorphism. Fifteen micro-patterns present oracle strategies--practical solutions for one of the hardest problems in test design. Seventeen design patterns explain how to automate your test suites with a coherent OO test harness framework. The author provides thorough coverage of testing issues such as: *The bug hazards of OO programming and differences from testing procedural code *How to design responsibility-based tests for classes, clusters, and subsystems using class invariants, interface data flow models, hierarchic state machines, class associations, and scenario analysis *How to support reuse by effective testing of abstract classes, generic classes, components, and frameworks *How to choose an integration strategy that supports iterative and incremental development *How to achieve comprehensive system testing with testable use cases *How to choose a regression test approach *How to develop expected test results and evaluate the post-test state of an object *How to automate testing with assertions, OO test drivers, stubs, and test frameworks Real-world experience, world-class best practices, and the latest research in object-oriented testing are included. Practical examples illustrate test design and test automation for Ada 95, C++, Eiffel, Java, Objective-C, and Smalltalk. The UML is used throughout, but the test design patterns apply to systems developed with any OO language or methodology. 0201809389B04062001

What Is This Book About?

Testing Object-Oriented Systems is a guide to designing test suites and test auto- mation for object-oriented software. It shows how to design test cases for any object-oriented programming language and object-oriented analysis/design (OOA/D) methodology. Classes, class clusters, frameworks, subsystems, and application systems are all considered. Practical and comprehensive guidance is provided for many test design questions, including the following:

  • How to design responsibility-based tests for classes and small clusters using behavior models, state-space coverage, and interface dataflow analysis.
  • How to use coverage analysis to assess test completeness.
  • How to design responsibility-based tests for large clusters and subsystems using dependency analysis and hierarchic state models.
  • How to design responsibility-based tests for application systems using OOA/D models.
  • How to automate test execution with object-oriented test drivers, stubs, test frameworks, and built-in test.

This book is about systems engineering and software engineering as much as it is about testing object-oriented software. Models are necessary for test design--this book shows you how to develop testable models focused on preventing and removing bugs. Patterns are used throughout to express best practices for designing test suites. Tools implement test designs--this book shows you how to design effective test automation frameworks.

Is This Book for You?

This book is intended for anyone who wants to improve the dependability of object-oriented systems. The approaches presented range from basic to advanced. I've tried to make this book like a well-designed kitchen. If all you want is a sandwich and a cold drink, the high-output range, large work surfaces, and complete inventory of ingredients won't get in your way. But the capacity is there for efficient preparation of a seven-course dinner for 20 guests, when you need it.

I assume you have at least a working understanding of object-oriented programming and object-oriented analysis/design. If you're like most OO developers, you've probably specialized in one language (most likely C++ or Java) and you may have produced or used an object model. I don't assume that you know much about testing. You will need some background in computer science and software engineering to appreciate the advanced material in this book, but you can apply test design patterns without specialized theoretical training.

You'll find this book useful if you must answer any of the following questions.

  • What are the differences between testing procedural and object-oriented software?
  • I've just written a new subclass and it seems to be working. Do I need to retest any of the inherited superclass features?
  • What kind of testing is needed to be sure that a class behaves correctly for all possible message sequences?
  • What is a good integration test strategy for rapid incremental development?
  • How can models represented in the UML be used to design tests?
  • What can I do to make it easier to test my classes and applications?
  • How can I use testing to achieve greater reuse?
  • How should I design test drivers and stubs?
  • How can I make my test cases reusable?
  • How can I design a good system test plan for an OO application?
  • How much testing is enough?

The material here is not limited to any particular OO programming language, OOA/D methodology, kind of application, or target environment. However, I use the Unified Modeling Language (UML) throughout. Code examples are given in Ada 95, C++, Java, Eiffel, Objective-C, and Smalltalk.

A Point of View

My seven-year-old son David asked, "Dad, why is your book so big?" I'd just told David that I'd have to leave his baseball game early to get back to work on my book. I wanted to explain my choice, so I tried to be clear and truthful in answering. This is what I told David at the kitchen table on that bright summer afternoon:

Testing is complicated and I'm an engineer. Making sure that things work right is very important for engineers. What do you think would happen if our architect - didn't make our house strong enough because he was lazy? It would fall down and we could get hurt. Suppose the engineers at GM did only a few pages' worth of testing on the software for the brakes in our car. They might not work when we need them and we'd crash. So when engineers build something or answer a question about how to build things, we have to be sure we're right. We have to be sure nothing is left out. It takes a lot of work.

As I was speaking, I realized this was the point of view I'd been struggling to articulate. It explains why I wrote this book and the way I look at the problem of testing object-oriented software. Testing is an integral part of software engineering. Object-oriented technology does not diminish the role of testing. It does alter some important technical details, compared with other programing paradigms. So, this is a large book about how testing, viewed as software engineering, should be applied to object-oriented systems development. It is large because testing and object-oriented development are both large subjects, with a large intersection. By the way--David hit two home runs later that afternoon while I was torturing the truth out of some obscure notions.

Acknowledgments

No one who helped me with this book is responsible for its failings.1 Dave Bulman, Jim Hanlon, Pat Loy, Meilir Page-Jones, and Mark Wallace reviewed the first technical report about the FREE methodology Binder 94.

1. John Le Carre crafted this concise statement about assistance he received on The Tailor of Panama. I can't improve on it.

In 1993, Diane Crawford, editor of Communications of the ACM, accepted my proposal for a special issue on object-oriented testing, which was published in September 1994. The contributors helped to shape my views on the relationship between the development process and testing. Bill Sasso (then with Andersen Consulting and now answering a higher calling) sponsored a presentation where questions were asked that led to development of the Mode Machine Test pattern (see Chapter 12). Bob Ashenhurst of the University of Chicago, James Weber, and the rest of the Regis Study Group raised more fundamental questions: What is a state? Why should we care about pictures?

The following year, Marie Lenzie, as editor of Object Magazine, accepted my proposal for a bimonthly testing column. Since 1995, writing this column has forced me to transform often hazy notions into focused, pragmatic guidance six times each year. Lee White of CASE Western Reserve University and Martin Woodward of the University of Liverpool, editors of the journal Software Testing, Verification, and Reliability, encouraged my work in developing a comprehensive survey, patiently waited, and then allocated an entire issue to its publication. Writing the survey helped to sort which questions were important, why they were asked, and what the best available thinking did and did not answer.

My publications, conference tutorials, and professional development seminars on object-oriented testing served as a conceptual repository and proving ground. Many of these materials, with the necessary changes, have been reused here. The cooperation of RBSC Corporation, SIGS Publications, the ACM, the IEEE, and Wiley (U.K.) is appreciated in this regard (see preceding Sources and Credits for details). The real-world problems and questions posed by my consulting clients and thousands of seminar participants have been humbling and constant spurs to refinement.

The patient support of Carter Shanklin and his predecessors at Addison-Wesley kept this project alive. Boris Beizer's steady encouragement, suggestions, and acerbic critiques have been invaluable.

Several adept programmers suggested code examples or helped to improve my own: Brad Appleton (C++ in the Percolation pattern and elsewhere), Steve Donelow (Objective-C built-in test), Dave Hoag (Java inner class drivers), Paul Stachour (Ada 95 assertions and drivers), and Peter Vandenberk (Objective-C assertions).

Drafts of patterns, chapters, and the entire book have been reviewed by many people. I am very grateful for the reviewers thoughtful and detailed feedback. Elaine Weyuker helped to debug my interpretation of her Variable Negation strategy presented in Chapter 6. Brad Appleton and the Chicago Patterns Study Group held two pattern writer's workshops that focused on the test design pattern template and early versions of the Invariant Boundary and Percolation patterns. Ward Cunningham commented on an early draft of the test pattern template. Several people reviewed test patterns based on their work: Tom Ostrand (Category-Partition), John Musa (Allocate Tests by Profile), and Michael Feathers (Incremental Testing Framework). Derek Hatley reviewed an early version of Combinational Logic (Chapter 6); Lee White, Regression Testing (Chapter 15); Doug Hoffman, Oracles (Chapter 18); and Dave Hoag, Test Harness Design (Chapter 19). Anonymous reviewers of an early version of the manuscript pointed out many opportunities for improvement. Brad Appleton, Boris Beizer, Camille Bell, Jim Hanlon, and Paul Stachour reviewed the entire final manuscript and provided highly useful commentary.

Finally, thanks to Judith, David, and Emily for years of support, patience, and encouragement.

Okay

Didn't meet my expectations... I purchased this book expecting that it would come filled with software patterns for testing software in general (not specifically OO), but as the title says, it's very specific to OO systems and OO technologies. Still a good reference.

"In this clever and fun introduction to assorted shapes, Greene and Kaczman collaborate effectively, clearly expounding an oval, square or octagon through bouncy rhyme, familiar examples and clean-edged artwork," wrote PW. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2. Ten shapes are presented in picture and verse. Along with the familiar circle, square, triangle, diamond, rectangle, octagon, and oval are the less frequent star, heart, and crescent. Each shape has its own verse and double-page spread packed with visual examples. There are even some extras for observant children to discover. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations are bold and clean, with ample color; however, a texturing technique occasionally results in a slightly murky appearance. At no time does this texturing obscure the text or interfere with line or shape. Those tired of bright primary colors in children's books may find the muting a nice change. A fine addition to units on shapes and a perky read-aloud.?Jody McCoy, Lakehill Preparatory School, Dallas, TX
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Cataloging several examples for each of ten regular shapes, Greene develops in an ever-changing rhyme scheme the premise that all shapes are made from bent lines. It's an eye-opening insight for readers, but confusing when blocks are considered square, a bubble, marble, and ``curled kitten'' are included in the list of circles, and ``star'' is defined as ``the shape of a fish.'' Readers may also falter at the triangle spread, since the three blocks of text are placed so that it's hard to tell in what order they're to be read; the ``tent built just for you'' has a triangular opening, but what children will notice is the diamond- shaped side. Kaczman's picture-book debut features a set of stylized, evenly colored, very simply drawn scenes, sometimes viewed from playfully skewed angles or featuring sight gags--a police officer chowing down on a doughnut, a kilted man playing hopscotch. Still, an instructional intent hangs heavy over this, and the examples are not always on target; a better book on the topic is Dayle Ann Dodds's The Shape of Things (1994). book review, books about teaching art to kids
By L. M. Freda
This book is lively and fun with great illustrations and wonderful rhyming words. I purchased it to help teach elementary school children about two of the elements of art: line and shape. It did the job very well and has so many examples in the course of the poetry that it is one of the books you can easily read over and over.

Review from ultra
By Scout Stevenson
In an industy where hundreds of childrens books are introduced almost every month, this one impressively stands out among all the other casualties for content and especially illustration. This is a rare case where illustration style and story does not try to partonize parents and their children nor does it come across as an over-intellectualized wanna-be childrens book. I can't wait to have children so I can read and reread this book to them.

Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles, by Geoff Emerick, Howard Massey

A fascinating memoir featuring never-before-told stories from Beatles recording engineer Geoff Emerick—the industry legend who made music history by crafting the groundbreaking sound of the group’s most famous records, including Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, and Abbey Road

Geoff Emerick was only fifteen years old when he began working with the Beatles as assistant engineer for their early classics "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You." Incredibly, at the age of nineteen, he was promoted to full engineer, taking the helm for the group’s groundbreaking album Revolver. Ten months later, he joined forces with the Beatles for the recording of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, hailed by Rolling Stone as the greatest album ever made. In their constant quest for experimentation and new sounds—and despite the technical limitations of the pre-digital age—Emerick developed a slew of innovative recording techniques, many of which are still in use today.

In Here, There and Everywhere, Emerick tells his story for the first time, taking the reader through the hallowed (though somewhat dingy) corridors of Abbey Road Studios to give rare insights into the Beatles’ unique creative processes and personalities and provide a behind-the- scenes look at how the greatest band of all time made their greatest records. As Emerick describes the Beatles’ transformation from wide-eyed Liverpool teenagers into tour-savvy professionals, he provides a startling picture of the Fab Four. Fascinating and moving, Here, There and Everywhere illuminates the creative tensions within the band that fueled their early success, but would ultimately lead them to record in separate studios while the partnership was disintegrating.

From Publishers Weekly
Emerick was a fresh-faced young engineer in April 1966 when producer George Martin offered him the chance to work with the Beatles on what would become Revolver. He lasted until 1968, when tensions within the group, along with the band members' eccentricities and the demands of the job, forced him to quit after The White Album, exhausted and burned out. In this entertaining if uneven memoir, Emerick offers some priceless bits of firsthand knowledge. Amid the strict, sterile confines of EMI's Abbey Road studio, where technicians wore lab coats, the Beatles' success allowed them to challenge every rule. From their use of tape loops and their labor-intensive fascination with rolling tape backwards, the Beatles—and Emerick—reveled in shaking things up. Less remarkable are Emerick's personal recollections of the band members. He concedes the group never really fraternized with him—and he seems to have taken it personally. The gregarious McCartney is recalled fondly, while Lennon is "caustic," Ringo "bland" and Harrison "sarcastic" and "furtive." Still, the book packs its share of surprises and will delight Beatle fans curious about how the band's groundbreaking records were made. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Emerick was only 15 when he began working with the Beatles as an assistant engineer at Abbey Road Studios. Later, as a 19-year-old full engineer, he was on board for the seminal Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Always aiming for perfection, the Beatles never took no for an answer, and he did his best to oblige by developing innovative recording techniques, some simple (e.g., using a loudspeaker as a microphone), others more sophisticated. Being the Beatles' engineer wasn't entirely pleasant. Eventually, during the tense and uncomfortable White Album sessions, the Beatles barely spoke to one another without anger, and Emerick quit before recording was finished. But he returned to work on Abbey Road and several McCartney solo records, including Band on the Run. Anyone interested in the Beatles and their music ought to love Emerick's as-told-to insider's account of working with the world's most famous band when they made their most famous music. June Sawyers

Fascinating Reading, Though Not Without Issues
By Michael Leake
Geoff Emerick’s “Here, There and Everywhere” is a fascinating book for any Beatles fan and I would recommend it, though it is not without its problems. Emerick had the opportunity to be the proverbial fly on the wall pretty much throughout the entire Beatles recording odyssey, starting initially as an underling in the early sessions and eventually becoming the recording engineer by the time of the Revolver sessions. He quit early on in the making of the White Album, amidst the well-documented acrimony in the studio, but later returned for Abbey Road.

It’s clear that Emerick has a pro-McCartney bias. This is partly due to Paul being more friendly toward him than the others right from the beginning. But it's also because he holds the opinion that McCartney was the "pure musician" of the group. Given McCartney’s proficiency on bass, fingerstyle acoustic guitar, lead guitar, piano and even drums, it’s hard to argue with that. However, Emerick also holds a dim view of George and Ringo as musicians, and it should be noted that others, such as Beatles engineer Ken Scott, had a much higher opinion of the talents of the latter two than does Emerick and have flatly stated their disagreement in that regard. Of course, as someone who was there, Emerick is certainly entitled to his opinion.

It should be mentioned that McCartney is not always presented in a flattering light either. Emerick notes that he was driven and could sometimes be overbearing to his band mates. He was even testy and bad-tempered at times, like all of the Beatles, in the group’s latter years. Meanwhile John comes off in the book as very talented but moody, impatient, somewhat lazy, and often high as a kite in the studio. He could be incredibly sweet and charming, according to Emerick, and sometimes very angry and nasty. Based on what we now know, that’s probably fairly accurate.

Where this book shines is in the descriptions of the recording process. From about 1966 on, the Beatles were searching for unusual sounds--a guitar that didn’t sound like a guitar, for instance--and it was the job of the engineer to figure out how to make it happen. Fortunately for the Beatles, Emerick was young and experimental and willing to break the steadfast EMI rules about how recording was to be done, which often landed him in hot water with the administrative higher ups. While George Martin was a gifted producer and orchestral and vocal arranger, it’s clear that he relied heavily on the engineers to satisfy the Beatles’ demands in their quest for the ultimate sound. Fortunately for the Beatles, Emerick was there to help through most of it.

Emerick is clearly very enamored of the Revolver/Sgt. Pepper period. The White Album that later followed in 1968 was such a wide departure and so different from the 1966/1967 period, perhaps this is why (incredibly to me) Emerick finds the White Album to be virtually unlistenable. Or perhaps it’s because he worked on it very little and thought he could have done it better. Either way, I’ve always felt it was a fine and diverse album, though again he is entitled to his dismissive opinion about it.

There is lots of interesting recording minutia scattered throughout the book. For instance, we find out why the alarm clock rings on “A Day in the Life” and learn that it was pure serendipity that it ended up dovetailing nicely with the “Woke up, fell out of bed” section in the middle. Working within the limitations of four-track tape recording, Emerick helped pioneer much of what we now take for granted in the greatly expanded digital recording world and it’s interesting to see the process unfold.

As for the breakup of the greatest band ever, Emerick actually goes pretty easy on Yoko, though he notes the tension and disruption her presence clearly caused. By 1969, as Emerick saw it, the Beatles were basically going in different directions musically--and in personal life--as well as growing sick and tired of one another amidst the clash of egos.

All in all, this is a fun and interesting read. I recommend it to any Beatles fan. You may find yourself in disagreement with some of his opinions, and there are some occasional factual issues, but this book really helps illumine the recording process of some of the most iconic pop/rock music ever produced.

But if you want to know what they were like in studio
By Dave Blazek (Consignment)
A tremendous look at the Beatles and their music from a production standpoint. If you're curious about the Beatles' lives outside the studio, you may want to look elsewhere. But if you want to know what they were like in studio, and how they and their engineers came up with their unique sounds, this is the book for you. Packed with tidbits ranging from the teenage girl stampede that energized the record of She Loves You to Geoff Emerick almost electrocuting John Lennon by trying to plunge a condom-sheathed microphone in a bottle of water to Yoko in a bed in the studio, this book covers it all. After I read it, I went back and listened to the entire Beatles archive with new ears.

Puts you in the studio and the recording room with the Fab Four
By Aviator Mario
An insightful read, places you right in the studio and recording booth with the Beatles in their prime and sudden decline. Emerick is one of those rare witnesses to musical history who tells it straight and doesn't make themselves the center of the story. He tells his role, plain and straight, and teaches a lot of the technical aspects of shaping music alongside the Beatles. He also gives a window into the band's dynamic, witnessed first hand, very straightforwardly and with no added drama. I respect Emerick's account of the band very much for this. A highly recommended read.
