Read several devotions before deciding to gift this.

My 8 year old daughter received this as a Christmas gift, and the idea of a book of devotions is wonderful. ... But this book has many mature ideas that I am uncomfortable with her reading at her age - even with discussion afterward.

Flipping through several pages in January brings up: possibly abusive alcoholism in parents (Jan 1); drug abuse (Jan 6); cheating in school (Jan 10); abusive or deadbeat parents, drug use, alcohol use, sex (Jan 14); porn (Jan 30). While these may be valid things for a teenager to think and worry about, my daughter hasn't been exposed to any of that yet, and frankly, I don't really want to point out all the negatives in the world to her for a few more years.

I will hang onto the book, and re-read it when she is in Jr. High to see if it is more fitting, but for now it is just not age appropriate.

This book assumes that girls are dealing with alcohol, physically abusive parents, and sexually active. Not exactly what my 6 year old girl needs.

This book is presented beautifully and looked perfect for my 10 year old. As we worked through Januarys daily devotions we quickly realised that the adult themes of sex, drugs and even porn were totally unsuitable. Carolyn Larsen what are you thinking?

About the Author
The extraordinary life of Laurens van der Post is not easily capsulized. Author of of many books, farmer, soldier, prisoner of war, political adviser to British heads of state, educator, humanitarian, philosopher, explorer, and conservationist are titles that barely indicate the depth and breadth of this rare individual. Born in 1906 in the interior of southern Africa, he lived among the people who created the first blueprint for life on earth, becoming the principal chronicler of the Stone Age Kalahari Bushmen. He was also one of C.G. Jung's closest friends for sixteen years. Van der Post dedicated his life to teaching the meaning and value of indigenous cultures in the modern world, a world he felt is in danger of losing its spiritual identity to technology, prejudice, empty values, and a lack of understanding of the interconnectedness of all life on earth. Awarded a knighthood (the C.B.E.) in 1981, Sir Laurens died after his 90th birthday, in December, 1996.

Van der Post's fascination, awe and respect come forth as the listener gets to know the Bushmen. The enthusiasm and excitement in Nettleton's voice translates itselfÐlisteners are observers to the mighty hunts and the celebratory dances around the fires. Nettleton even teaches some of Bush language by presenting words and their translations, which he reuses often enough to help the listener retain. This beautiful story is almost perfectly told. Exploring Africa's southern desert in search of its original human population

In the 50s, van der Post organized a group to find the last surviving bushmen living in their traditional way, entirely dependent on what they knew of the desert, untainted by modern thought and technology. On his parents' farm, he'd grown up with bushman workers who taught him their language and touched his heart with their stories of slaughter and abuse of their people by black tribes and whites. After immense frustration with his film team, and fruitless weeks in the great swamp in the north of modern Botswana, they start again and contact a family living in the dune country south of there. What they learn, about the very able and intelligent ancestors of all humanity, is both poignant and fascinating to anyone with an interest in culture and the earliest history of people.

One of the last eye-witness accounts

Well-written and accurate, Laurens managed to meet one of the last truly "wild" bushman groups before this amazing people became overwhelmed by modern "civilization" (to understand how they were ten years before and 20 years after Laurens' visit, I recommend "The Harmless People"). By the time anthropologists and, later, dna-scientists became fascinated by Bushmen, they could no longer hunt as they could when Laurens visited them. Laurens describes the Bushmen and their way of life with intimate care, relating to them as one human being to another. Not like a scientist studying an "object". He is also a good writer, for example when he describes the eland-hunt. I loved to read this book while travelling through Southern Africa. Especially for travellers to Okavango & surroundings, this is a must-read.

One of the best Jung biographies....

....from a gifted writer who knew Jung personally. The beauty of this book's language is surpassed only by its relevance for an in-depth look at Jung's life and ideas as narrated by his friend and associate. This book lacks the factual content of some of the big Jung biographies, but it illuminates and explains many of Jung's deepest ideas while providing anecdotes not available in other biographies. Well worth reading if you can get past the author's almost unwavering tone of idealization ("Jung was the first ever to --"; "no one else in all of human history had done such-and-such before Jung" etc.). He manages to remain insightful in spite of it.

An Intimate Look at Jung and his Work

After World War II, still in uniform and having been in a Japanese POW camp, Van der Post arrived in Zurich where his wife was studying with Carl Jung's mistress, Toni Wolff. Van der Post met Jung and an unlikely friendship ensued, based at first on a common love of Africa (van der Post's native continent.) The book explores Jung the man with rich doses of Van der Post's own narrative and subjectivity. It is unusually vivid, non-analytic, yet deep. The era of the end of the War and emerging Cold War helps set Jung in a meaningful context. Van der Post resonates powerfully with Jung's emphasis on dreams, which seems surprising in a man of action, but the depth he achieves in exploring some of Jung's well-known dreams is rewarding. He also catches some of the man's faults and foibles, so the tone, while idealizing on the whole, has a convincing precision of detail. The two men, author and subject, share a deep passion for the religious (as well as similar Reformed roots) and so the reader is drawn into a passionate dialogue about good and evil, God, the collective unconscious, war, racism, and other fascinating themes of Jung's work. Van der Post illuminates Jung's work without getting into the scholarly or pedantic mode, and brings the world of Jung's time to bear on our understanding of the man and his work. In addition to Jung, other members of the Zurich coterie are portrayed with spirited appreciation. Highly recommended.

Makes a great gift for anyone with a Beard!

I got this as a gift for my husband. He has a beard and love history. It has all sorts of chapters about types of beards and how they came about. He enjoyed it and thought it was interesting. Some small images / sketches in it. Made a great gift.

A MUST READ FOR EVERY BEARDED MAN OR EVERY MAN THINKING OF GROWING A BEARD

Allan Peterkin is a genius and great historian. In order to write a book related to a cultural history of facial hair takes passion and commitment.

I just finished reading this book and found it fascinating, enlightening, educational, and historical. ONE THOUSAND BEARDS also had a brilliant editor. The content follows a pattern organizational content put together beautifully from the introduction to the bibliography.

Allan Peterkin gave me the opportunity to look up certain words that I did not know the meanings of. However, I completed reading the book first and underlined parts of its vocabulary. Instead of using the dictionary during my reading, I waited until I waited until I was finished digesting the entire content of ONE THOUSAND BEARDS.

This is not a four star book. It is worth ten stars. Forget about the 1992 publishing date. ONE THOUSAND BEARDS is current, to the point, and an incredible read.

I was so impressed with this book; I would consider it an honor if I could get my copy autographed by the author. Hopefully if Allan Peterkin reads my review he will contact me through Amazon and make my wish a reality.

I have a great deal of respect for its author. The only thing left to say is congratulations.

History, meaning, and how-to

Psychiatrist and writer Allan Peterkin has a playful and curious mind, and an obvious love of research. His past wanderings have taken him into the vagaries and varieties of the language of erotics, which he tackled enthusiastically - with a thesaurus, no less. The subject of beards is one that he admits he had never given much thought until one morning a few years ago.
His interest was piqued, he says in his introduction to this delightful book, in "one of those perverse moments of inspiration." Walking to work in downtown Toronto, "rather than indulging my own thoughts as usual," he started noticing faces, and he then noticed that more than a third of the males were in some fashion bearded, soul patched, sideburned, mustachioed - and so it began. He wanted to uncover the meanings of facial hair, the "unconscious reasons" that men grew and tended beards, and even the "ritualistic symbolism of shaving." He wondered what women thought about beards. His survey expanded to his colleagues, his psychotherapy patients, and strap-hangers on the Toronto subway. (You might guess that he asked his friends, too.) He was off and running.
This marvelous and generously-illustrated book is the result of his considerable ability to tackle his subject with energy, brainpower, humor and a sense of fun. It's a documentary, a history, a survey, an appreciation, and a catalogue. There are hundreds of black and white illustrations, and topical quotations from famous and not so famous beard-wearers. Chapter 6 deals with the (usually) unwanted thing: "The Feminine Beard." The compulsory beard (the Taliban being a recent and dramatic example of mandatory beardedness) is examined, too - in a chapter on religious beards. There's a "Timeline of Queer Facial Hair" among other remarkable bits of information in the chapter "The Gay Beard."
Facial hair's inevitable products and labors (shaving cream, razors, clippers, trimmers, and more) are included. Chapter 13, "The Personal Beard: Grooming Strategies" is a sort of owner's manual. If Great-grand-dad is no longer around to show you how to strop a razor, you can use Peterkin's instructions.
There are a lot of useful addresses and websites listed at this book's end (even "Where to Order False Facial Hair" should you need some), an extensive bibliography but, unfortunately, no index. Nonetheless this is a delightful book that is comprehensive and smart - and also a lot of fun. I know that I won't look at or think about facial hair in quite the same way ever again.

By this latter value in particular, the kitsch painter is able to work according to knowable standards that painting prior to modernism has established--standards that are “more than art,” for, as Nerdrum puts it, “the kitsch painter commits himself to the eternal: love, death and the sunrise.” Kitsch is a manifesto that recruits figurative painters both old and new, such as William Dyce, Paul Fenniak, Sampo Kaikkonen, Isaac Levitan, Osiris Rain, Ilya Repin, Giovanni Segantini, Valentin Serov, George Tooker, George Frederick Watts and Anders Zorn, and situates their work alongside more than 70 of Nerdrum's recent paintings. Alongside essays, poems and plays by the artist, Kitsch contains an extended dialogue on the topic between Nerdrum and Maria Kreyn.

Another good book about Nerdrum

The more I learn about Nerdrum, the better he gets.

First of all, this is a great looking book. Classic linen spine with leather title badge. Beautifully printed, lots of high quality full color reproductions of Nerdrum's work, new and old. Compared to Odd Nerdrum: Themes and Odd Nerdrum: Paintings, Sketches, and Drawings, this book does have some overlap with the images offered, but the majority of Nerdrum's work depicted here is not seen in the other books. Also, some of the work here seems less polished than work we've seen previously. Not inferior (not at all) but different. One gets the impression that work compiled in his previous books were selected very carefully to depict certain themes (obviously, the recent book being called 'Themes'). Some of the new work here would probably not fit in very well amongst some of the other paintings. For instance, one of Nerdrum's paintings here has an airplane in the sky. Really, it does. Nothing wrong with it, it just wouldn't fit with a lot of his desolate landscapes. Also depicted are several new still lifes (mostly fowl), new landscapes and of course many new figure paintings including self portraits. Many pictures of work by Nerdrum's students is here too. Some better than others, of course, but all very nice. An account of Nerdrum's school is also given which gives insight into Nerdrum's practices both as a painter and a teacher.

The 'Kitsch' text in this book is also very good. Though the book was not originally published in English, the language is very natural and easy to follow. (Unlike some translations which end up with awkward sentences and difficult rhythms.) Lots of insight about Nerdrum, and of course Kitsch, is offered here for the first time. If you're well educated with Nerdrum and have had discussions with any of his students, very little will actually be 'new.' But don't let that turn you off, as several interviews with Nerdrum, as well as poems and essays by Nerdrum himself, are also included for the first time. Again there is some overlap with his previous Kitsch book On Kitsch, but not so much that it becomes a problem.

A True Genius of Our Time

I have been a huge fan of Odd Nerdrum for many years...I consider him one of the few genius artists of this century....He is the Rembrandt of our time and I see no one even close to his talent...The Kitsch, More than Art book provides yet another view of this amazing artist and his thoughts about his own work and the work of others....I am very satisfied with my purchase....

The virtuoso painter uses Kitsch in your favor.
It's an interesting research showing that humans can understand contemporary concepts but still inside the same, always sharing your human nature, so, we like beauty, in the past, now or in the future. If dadaists killed art, at least some gave credit to that, it lives like ever and we can call it "kitsch" :-D

Good addition for trainees

Pros: Very easy to read, case based therefore good review for trainees prior to a case, very useful succinct literature review on important topics.

Cons: Very limited information on the basics of neuroangiography such as neurovascular anatomy, angiography techniques and instuments etc and no in-depth details/discussion of any topic.

In my view its a good addition for trainees, very limited use for an experienced interventionalist.

Unique book in interventional neuroradiology

This is definitely a fantastic book on Interventional Neuroradiology. Learning in this field involves a combination of technique knowledge with vascular disease knowledge, especially natural history and brings one up to difficult and specific management problems, to which the answer is not always on the literature. A real answer to those problems was was what impressed me the most in this book.
Its a unique book because it is case based, approaching in each case and for every theme, the different situations / problems one can face concerning that pathology. For each problem a schematic answer helps to organize your mind on how to approach those different situations, always with review of the current state of art, and the authors personal experience / opinion about the different options presented.
The cases are presented starting from clinical history with physical examination, differential diagnosis evolving to the detailed description of the material used, the treatment (with tips really helpful for your daily pratice). Then for each case there is a review of the available options (conservative, surgical, radiosurgical, endovascular....)with the pros and cons arguments for each option, ending with a critical review about the published literature on treatment options.
Details on specific problems regarding management, follow up and possible complications are also included, with important advices on how to avoid problems.
For everyone in this field, starting or with experience (or preparing for examination like me) this is a book definitely worth its value!

Practical and sufficiently detailed for real world practice, this book contains valuable tips, tricks, and principles of best practice from a world-renowned group. The Difference Between a Reporter and A Historian

The good news: an epic sweep through computing history connecting the dots as Isaacson's sees them. Even if you're not a technical history fan than this book will serve as the definitive history of computing through the first decade of the 21st century.

The bad news: this book will serve as the definitive history of computing through the first decade of the 21st century. It is at best technically wrong, misses some of the key threads in computing history and starts with a premise (that innovation comes from collaboration) and attempts to write history to fit.

The difference between and a reporter and a historian is that one does a superficial run-through of a rolodex of contacts and the other tries to find the truth. Unfortunately Isaacson's background as reporter for Time and CNN makes this "history" feel like he was comfortable going through his Rolodex of "Silicon Valley" sources connecting interviews, and calling it history.

I'm sure Isaacson would claim, "more details get in the way of a good story," however that is exactly the difference between a throwaway story on CNN and a well written history. The same epic sweep could have embraced and acknowledged the other threads that Isaacson discarded. The gold standard for a technical history is Richard Rhodes "The Making of the Atomic Bomb."
(Other reviewers have pointed out pointed several critical missing parts of computing history. I'll add one more. While perpetuating the "Intel invented the microprocessor" story makes great business press copy it's simply wrong. Intel commercialized something they knew someone else had already done. Lee Boysel at Four Phase invented the first microprocessor. If Isaacson had done his homework he would have found out that Bob Noyce was on the Four Phase board, knew about the chip and encouraged Intel to commercialize the concept.)

Finally, one of the "facts" in this book that differentiate reporting from history is the garbled bio of Donald Davies, one of the key inventors of Packet Switching. Davies is described as "during the war he worked at Birmingham University creating alloys for nuclear weapons tubes..." I started laughing when I read that sentence. It's clear Isaacson had no idea what Davies did in WWII. He obviously found a description of Davies' war work, didn't understand it and re-edited it into something accidently amusing - and revealing. What Davies had actually done during the war is worked on the British nuclear weapons program - codenamed "TubeAlloys".

Understanding the distinction is the difference between a reporter and a historian.

An epic, fast moving history with some flaws and omissions that can be corrected in a second edition or paperback epilogue

One of the greatest strengths of Walter Isaacson’s latest book is the author’s personal interviews with some of the post-Altair key players. A curious weakness noted by a few reviewers is that some of the earliest digital computers are absent from the text. A paragraph or two on the fascinating history of the ancient abacus would have been nice. While Isaacson is generally correct in observing that advances in computer technology have benefitted from or were made possible by collaborations, those advances often occurred as step functions and not gradual ramps.

A full review of this latest Isaacson book would require a book of its own. So I’ll zero in only on the Altair 8800 story. While the Altair’s Intel 8800 microprocessor was developed in Silicon Valley, Isaacson begins his account of the Altair by noting that the first commercially successful hobby computer was developed far away in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Altair was designed by Ed Roberts, who headed MITS, Inc. Isaacson captures only a hint of Ed’s personality during those heady days, and he emphasizes Ed’s hobbyist side more than his degree in electrical engineering. Ed was a first class designer of both analog and digital circuits, an ability most notably shared by Steve Wozniak.

Elsewhere in this tome Isaacson adds flavor and spice to the origins of the PC era with some captivating interviews with some of the key players. Unfortunately, Ed passed away in 2010 (Bill Gates visited him in the hospital), and was not around to be interviewed. Dave Bunnel and other MITS veterans could have added some great Ed stories and corrected a few flaws. For example, the Altair was not developed in The Enchanted Sandwich Shop, which I rented for $100 per month so we could move MITS from Ed’s garage to prepare the Opticom kits we sold through Popular Electronics. That was in 1970, long before the Altair. The Altair was named by Popular Electronics staffers Alexander Burawa and John McVeigh, not by Les Solomon’s daughter.

These errors are trivial (one of Ed's favorite words) in light of this book's vast reach and they don’t take away from the significance of this book, which could be the primary text for a university course on the history of modern computing. But since Ed’s Altair set the stage for much of the industry that followed, it would be good to have a flawless and somewhat more detailed account of the Altair’s origin. A number of other histories of the PC have similar errors. While a revised and corrected second edition would be best, perhaps the paperback version of Isaacson’s book can includes an epilogue with at least some mention of the missing computers noted here by other reviewers and more about Ed, MITS and the Altair story.

An ideal platform for an epilogue is the Startup Gallery of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque. Startup, which was conceived and largely financed by Paul Allen, presents the history of modern computing with many rare artifacts from Allen’s personal collection. The centerpiece is devoted to the development of the Altair, complete with video interviews with Ed Roberts and the other key players. A nearby multimedia presentation is must watching.

2015 will be the Altair’s 40th anniversary. If Isaacson can visit Startup and provide advance notice of his arrival, perhaps some of us MITS veterans can meet him there and give him a tour.

Excellent telling of the story of computing technology

Wonderful overview of the history of computing technology, blending the human stories with their industrial results. My suggestion to non-tech readers is that if you feel put off by the theoretical, early contributions of Countess Lovelace, give it a couple of chapters for the relevance to become apparent, or just fast forward a chapter to World War II, when the race is on between British and American computing efforts, spurred, in part, by horrific weapons and a cryptographic arms race with Germany. This book demonstrates well how the iPhone and the Internet are both side effects of the Cold War, as well as some pretty arrogant, greedy bastards and novel organizational concepts that grew into the ecology we call Silicon Valley, thanks in no small part to Professor Frederick Terman. Lots of taxpayer money was fairly well spent by the IT sector of the military industrial complex, enabling, among other things, our beloved Amazon. For those who enjoy broader history and science of the Cold War, I suggest, as complementary books: Martians of Science (Istvan Hargittai) and The Wise Men (Isaacson and Thomas).
