About the Author

JANE STRAUS (1954–2011) was an educator and best-selling author with extensive experience teaching English to adult learners. She created The Blue Book because she found no resources that explained English rules “in plain English.” Straus also created the popular website GrammarBook.com. LESTER KAUFMAN is publisher of GrammarBook.com. He married Jane Straus in 1987, eventually retiring from his career in government to help with her website. TOM STERN is a veteran reporter and columnist. In 2012, his bimonthly newspaper column on English grammar and usage won a first-place award in the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspapers Contest.

I'm a writer, editor, and writing teacher. I've never considered myself a grammarian, but I'm pretty good at recognizing what's correct and what's not. I currently teach a grammar course at a community college and have been looking for good grammar books. I bought this on Amazon for two reasons: low cost and high rating. I should have looked at the unusual number of single-star reviews. You get what you pay for. Even upon quick review, I found numerous errors and just plain bad advice. Here are a few examples:

COLONS
In her section on colons, the author implies that there are only two occasions to use the colon: when lists follow independent clauses and when sentences are joined without a coordinating conjunction, as long as the second sentence "explains or illustrates the first sentence." This is bad advice! First, what follows a colon most certainly does not have to be a complete sentence: a phrase or clause will do. Yet she doesn't have a so-called "rule" for this very common use of the colon! Here's one example of a colon construction that she completely ignores:

He was greeted by a horrible sight: a dead dog on his doorstep.

Furthermore, she instructs the reader to "use a colon instead of a semicolon" when the the second sentence "explains or clarifies" the first, yet in her examples,a semicolon would be entirely acceptable, or even preferable! This is totally misleading and just plain bad advice.

Her Examples:
I enjoy reading: novels by Kurt Vonnegut are among my favorites.
Garlic is used in Italian cooking: it greatly enhances the flavor of pasta dishes.

In each case, the semicolon would be a perfectly good punctuation choice, yet she has instructed the reader not to use it! Her examples are simply not exemplary; they are not illustrative of ideal use. Instead, try this:

Of all the authors I admire, one stands out as my favorite: Kurt Vonnegut.
The key to Italian cooking is garlic: it greatly enhances the flavor of pasta dishes.

The point is that colons, when used correctly, create suspense and excitement in writing. There is a kind of pregnant pause after the colon in which the reader, with bated breath, awaits the answer. The fact that the writer is not aware of this is a dead giveaway of her lack of expertise.

COMMAS AND SEMICOLONS
In Rule 21, she writes, "Use either a comma or a semicolon before introductory words such as namely, that is, i.e., for example .... when they are followed by a series of items." This is not correct! She just made this up! She cites the following examples as being correct:

You may be required to bring many items, e.g., sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing.
You may be required to bring many items; e.g., sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing.

I have never come across a single grammar or style book that allows a semicolon to be used to join an independent clause with a simple list. When it is used in conjunction with a list, its sole purpose is to separate items with internal punctuation. This is just bizarre.

Because it has been so difficult to find a good, inexpensive grammar textbook, I felt I had write this review for everyone else like me who's out there.

I hate teaching grammar...

Let’s be honest. No one is purchasing this book because it’s an exciting read and there are plans to release a movie version soon. You need a grammar book that will allow you to reference something quickly, such as using the correct form of ‘effective’ or how you should avoid using the word ‘literally’ when what you really mean is ‘virtually’. If that’s what you’re after, then this is the book for you. As an English teacher, I’m always on the lookout for an easy to use, teacher-friendly grammar book. What I liked most about this book was its organization and length. It cut right to the chase and focused on the most important parts of grammatically correct writing.
The organization of the workbook is its strong suit. It is easy to reference a particular rule or topic. Chapter Five is entitled; Confusing Words and Homonyms. It is a concise list of words that are often misused and confused. I use the list in my classroom every day! Literally, every day!

Excellent 2014 Update Makes A Worthy Addition To My Library

I regularly write letters to clients of our firm, and the Blue Book has been absolutely instrumental for proper grammar and punctuation. I was delighted to see this new edition — this update and revision does not disappoint! Being a weekly newsletter subscriber, I can appreciate the number of man-hours and meticulous research Mr. Kaufman and Mr. Stern devoted to this project. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it would be a shame if would-be purchasers paid attention to a critical review over the mistaken notion that one word was supposedly used improperly. After all, anybody can put anything up on the web, but this book had to be reviewed and edited multiple times before publication. The 2014 version of the Blue Book is a worthy addition to my library. I look forward to referring to it frequently and often!

Spirit of Prophecy
By Miss L
Ellen White really brings the reader into Bible with her insight and commentary. She brings understanding to the events represented in scripture. The detail is amazing. I do not understand why the text of the book has not been reprinted using modern technology(not changing the words, just retyping the text). There are areas in the book where the text did not print in the center. I had to finish the words (not hard).

About the Author
Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming is a renowned author and teacher of Chinese martial arts and Qigong. Born in Taiwan, he has trained and taught Taijiquan, Qigong and Chinese martial arts for over forty-five years. He is the author of over thirty books, and was elected by Inside Kung Fu magazine as one of the 10 people who has "made the greatest impact on martial arts in the past 100 years." Dr. Yang lives in Northern California.
Jeffery A. Bolt, Tournament promoter and Vice President of the USA Wushu Kungfu Federation, was inducted into Inside Kung Fu Magazine's Hall of Fame for Outstanding Martial Arts Promotions. Studying and teaching Chinese Martial Arts since 1975, he currently runs the Houston Institute of Chinese Martial Arts. Mr. Bolt lives in Houston, Texas.

Northern Shaolin Sword: Form

I've practice the martial arts for years. However like most people in the martial arts world whom live in the United States and have a family, I have a primary job that takes away 97% of my time. This book is a good refresher and refreshing to read and see the demonstrations within the many photographs taken-which corrected my techniques I was in error of. It also offered new techniques which are a little different yet similar from forms used in Tai Chi. As a person whom studied Both Northern and South Shaolin “influenced or brother” styles in addition to Japanese and Korean when I was younger. I highly recommend this book.

A good work

To begin, I believe that books are an inadequate didactic medium within the martial arts world; only a live instructor can point out the subtleties and variations in the motions of the arts. However, many books, this included, are a valuable resource to practitioners.
Although the greater part of the book was very thorough, I have some caveats about those parts which are not as acceptable. The beginning covers a brief history of Chinese swords (mainly of the jian variety). I'm not sure if this is a misconception by the author or a mistake in editing, but some of the pictures misrepresent the weapons they are supposed to illustrate; a slight rearrangement would fix this in most instances, but the fact that they are not arranged properly may result in trouble for the less cautious reader, or for the amateur. I further disagree with some of Yang's descriptions of the jian; the paragraph about the "blood groove" in especial. Although he is a respected martial artist, I maintain that those writers who know little about the weapon itself should write less; knowledge of its use does not, in many cases, signify knowledge of construction/history.
Yang does not go into as much detail as I would like in some aspects; the martial merit of some techniques should be explained more deeply. In many cases, he suffices to say that these techniques were efficient and worked, but did not really provide any reason besides vague references to balance or qi.
However, I am impressed with the thoroughness with which Yang tackles the subject. He covers basic stances, guards, and attacks, and depicts three very detailed forms (he dedicates approximately 100 pages to the first!). I was also pleased to note that he included the hanzi for many of the terms he uses, although he uses the English translation of the terms throughout the text rather than the Pinyin; e.g. he would refer to the Horse Stance rather than to Ma Bu. As something of a purist, I would rather see the Chinese than the English, but some may prefer the contrary.
One last point with which I was pleased was his enthusiasm to warn the reader that his book is NOT a comprehensive manual, and that actual instruction is required to reach any real level of skill in jianshu. I agree with this whole-heartedly. Even though this book is excellent for beginners, no beginner should rely solely on it to attain skill.
Overall, a very decent book indeed; certainly worth a look, and a good foundation for building new skills or for refreshing old skills.

There are few and far books in between to act as a reference for the science of cellular signal transduction, primarily because it is, somewhat, a new science. A reference for signal transduction is prone to become a pedantic, collation of incomprehensive trivia, authors and editors generally finding it difficult to depart from its biochemical origins. This difficulty is primarily stems from the broadness of its subject matter which reaches from biochemical interactions, genetic codes and motifs, molecular dynamics, systems biology and network theory. It is easy for both the author and the reader to become myopic, focusing on only one aspect of this broad description of the most dynamic aspect of biological functions.
One of the best books out there that first presented a cohesive science of signal transduction was Cellular Signal Processing, edited by Friedrich Marks et al, and published in 2009. Marks had succeeded where others had failed by primarily focusing on the motifs of signaling proteins, how domains of a molecule affect the function of the pathway and through sharing these motifs they can be presumed to be genealogically associated with others, all the while presenting introductions to more specialized fields of networking, sacrificing voluminous myriad of details in lieu of a broader picture. Unfortunately his book is now already five years old.
Fewer books have since been able to present a reference that is unifying in its scope, while also presenting a detailed professional approach to its subject. Thankfully, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press has again collected the leading minds of the field under a unified direction in an attempt to provide the next best thing. Concisely, Signal Transduction, edited by Cantley et al, succeeds in many places Cellular Signal Processing, edited by Marks et al, fails, and also fails in some noticeable points. For one thing, it is comprehensive and authoritative. It is indeed presented by the leading figures in the field, and its quality is on par to become staples of the researcher’s shelf like other books from its publisher. However, at times it does fall prey to the shortcomings of its field, as in section II where pages and pages are followed by the most up-to-date version of pathways after pathways. The important thing to understand when looking for a book on signaling pathways, or other cutting edge science for that matter, is to understand that within five years these descriptions will become obsolete, whereas a philosophy behind these pathways would at least last a decade.
Unfortunately, the researcher can seldom wait that long for someone to make sense for them, and we must carry on with what we have. In this sense, Signal Transduction is probably the best concise guide to the complex web of cellular signaling that is up to date

Great Book.

Signal Transduction is all about the role of communication within the body’s cellular structure, and how the cells respond collectively to nerve stimuli. These can be internal (such as with hormones or increased fat consumption) or external (such as inhaled gases) and the cells will all react differently. The book begins by listing and describing the roles of the different cell receptors, with their benefits and drawbacks clearly defined. The Tyrosine-Kinase receptor, for instance, stimulates cell proliferation, but if it becomes overactive, it can encourage uncontrolled cell division with is, to the layman, a tumor.

The next, and probably the most important part of a textbook like this, is the illustration. Take the chapter titled “Signaling and Cell Polarity” as an example; it uses a diagram to show the Hippo Pathway, and the connection between the proteins and other factors. The chapter on Sensory Receptors discusses things like photoreceptors, which play a role in vision. As we can all guess, any interruption between those receptors would result in impaired vision, so the diagrams show the capacity to process, store, and if the signals are not needed, dispose and discard. Another diagram shows the difference in receptor response to plant colors in bees versus primates. It shows how the photoreceptors of these animals respond differently to colors with regard to feeding.

Signal Transduction goes further into the subject of cellular communication, including reproduction. In this chapter, we learn how hormones can dictate sperm cell count, heart rate, and blood pressure. However, the authors don’t blame the problems entirely on the internal factors alone. They also discuss how external factors effect cell behavior, such as temperature, day and time, nutrition, etc. We know that gland such as the pituitary can be shut down by physical trauma, and if the pituitary gland doesn’t provide hormone, it can cause cells to become idle.

I give this book an excellent review, with regard to its clear explanations and use of diagramming to illustrate cell communication. I would, however, welcome some case studies of the symptoms of negative effects. The chapter where the photoreceptors are discussed would have been well-served with some photographic examples.

I like this book****

I think this is a great guide if you want to learn the foundations of starting a business and being an entrepreneur. Anyone might think it's easy to do and would be a breeze but it's definitely not. The guide was surprisingly very detailed and long and in-depth. I think this is a really fantastic guide even though I'm giving it less star than perfect. I just have a small gripe that I wish that these will contain helpful charts or illustrations to really increase engagement of the readers and those enthusiastic start ups. I still think this is a great guide though. The book has the series of steps from the time of Idea development to the time of selling your products and Accounting for the expenditure and profits.

Fantastic sales techniques bundle

I am one of those people who is sales-averse and it has taken me a long time to internalize that sales are integral part of success in any business. As a business owner, this is so important and I was very impressed with author Justin Cook's book "The Art and Science of Likeability". As I hadn't picked up his other books yet (they were on my list), grabbing this awesome package was a no-brainer. There are some great tips in his "Extreme Salesmanship" on how to deal with almost any sort of client and I am always in need of help with my negotiating skills. Cook writes in a very easy to read and relatable style and I can't recommend these books enough for anyone in business. Very well done.

This "bundle" is really just a collection of shallow, cliched observations that seem to have been gleaned from magazine articles. For example, the section on getting people to like you includes revolutionary tips such as:
- have a firm handshake
- be sure to smile
- make jokes (but not lewd ones)
- don't constantly check your cell phone

Even worse, it is filled with advertisements to link to the authors other publications. It feels like it was pumped out in a couple hours to capitalize on the kindle impulse buy market.
The only plus I can say is that I only wasted $5 to learn a lesson.

Andy explores his inner self with a discerning eye toward answering the "why do I do it" question. This memoir is well written and properly edited and is a worthwhile read. He brings the reader along with him on a number of interesting journeys. Highly recommended

A great read for both alpine climbers and the general public.

SO good. May times, stories about climbing and mountaineering get "embellished" and lack the honesty and humbleness with which Andy Kirkpatrick describes them. I loved the sense of humor, and how you can go from sweaty palms to laughing out loud, back to sweaty palms. Great book, great writing.

Andy is a funny guy. Who writes of the terror and hard climbing he's done, in a psychotic driven fashion. I love his honesty about why he climbs and what he does. A very good read that will make you appreciate being warm and a soft bed while at the same time make you long for the mountains.

An Amazon Best Book of November 2016: Last year’s Reacher book, Make Me, ended on a minor medical cliffhanger which I, for one, was looking forward to seeing resolved this Fall. But author Lee Child isn’t giving up the goods so easily. Instead of picking up where that book left off, he takes Reacher back in time to 1996. Still in the Army, Reacher is coming off a medal-earning career triumph when he is sent back to school. His three-man class (Reacher, a CIA guy and an FBI agent) however, is a front for a secret mission: figure out the plot behind a message intercepted in Germany which reads “the American wants 100 million dollars.” The good news for fans is that all the familiar elements show up in Night School: the words “Reacher says nothing” appear at least half a dozen times, and as usual, Reacher combines mechanical precision and brute strength to beat up bad guys with a degree of violence falling somewhere between Bruce Lee and a backhoe. Best of all, fan-favorite Sergeant Frances Neagley makes a welcome reappearance, riding shotgun with Reacher as he hunts for his quarry. Is the plot as robust and impressive as our hero? Not entirely, but readers will barely notice. Twenty-one books into this series it’s clear that what makes them work as well as they do is the joy of watching Reacher’s extraordinary powers of deduction working in tandem with his remarkable ass-kicking abilities. Lee Child's new book, "Night School" - a little less of the Jack Reacher we know and love, but still very good.

I’ve read all 20 Jack Reacher novels, written by Lee Child. I jumped at the chance to evaluate copy of his newest book. You don’t read 20 of anything unless you really like the characters, and “Night School” is no different. Taking place back in the mid-90’s Military Police Major Jack Reacher is reassigned to go back to school – but it isn’t what anyone thinks. It’s really just a cover to investigate a possible act of treason and terrorism. Reacher teams up with his old colleague Sgt. Frances Neagley and a group of new folks representing the FBI, CIA and the national Security Council to find out what is happening and how to stop it. The best part of a mystery is finding out what happens, so I won’t spoil anything, but Jack Reacher does his usual thing and in the end prevails in the usual Reacher fashion. The interaction between Neagley and Reacher, along with the other team members is entertaining.

That’s the good part, now the part that isn’t quite as good. I like Reacher novels because over the years he has been consistent - Jack Reacher is a really interesting character – keeps a clock in his head – always know exactly what time it is. Calculates the physics of a punch before he throws it, etc. In this book, Reacher is a bit more superficial. There is a lot less of Reacher’s thought process in this book and I felt it made the book a bit less fun to read. In fact, I can only give it “4 Stars” because it’s good – very good, in fact… but it lacks a bit of what makes Reacher novels so enjoyable.

Reacher fans will love it. Folks new to the series will enjoy it, as well. I enjoyed it. I just wish Lee Child done a bit more to keep Reacher’s character as unique and entertaining as he has done in the past.

I love Reacher novels, and own them all, but this one was flat-out boring. Normally I can't stop reading and end up losing sleep because I have to know what happens next. With "Night School" I had to force myself to keep going. I'd suggest skipping this one, or waiting till later once the price has dropped.

Lee Child, in "Night School," takes us back to 1996, when Jack Reacher was a thirty-five year old army major who had served his country for twelve years. His superior officer, General Garber, orders him to report to the Pentagon, where he is supposed to take a continuing education course. However, this is merely a ruse to keep anyone from knowing that the President of the United States wants Jack and a select group of agents from the CIA and FBI to prevent a catastrophe.

Alfred Ratcliffe, the National Security Adviser, and Raticliffe's deputy, Dr. Marion Sinclair, inform Reacher and his colleagues that an Iranian spy working for the CIA in Hamburg, Germany, has learned that Middle-Eastern extremists are about to make a major purchase from an unidentified American. We are off to the races, and fortunately, Reacher is on our side. In addition to his prowess in hand-to-hand combat (he is six feet five and two hundred and fifty pounds of muscle), Jack is a thinker who analyzes data, makes critical decisions, deploys resources as needed, and uses his uncanny instincts to excellent advantage. He recruits the intelligent and competent Sergeant Frances Neagley to assist him. Jack and company face a daunting challenge: They must identify the key players in this proposed exchange; find out where and when the sale is supposed to take place; and stop it from happening. All of this must be accomplished without alerting the public. Reacher ignores orders and sidesteps the law when it suits him. He knows that if he succeeds, he will be forgiven, but if he fails, he will be blamed and perhaps face prosecution.

"Night School" is a diverting throwback to the days before 9/11. The Internet and supercomputers had not yet changed the world. In addition to Reacher, a man who makes every word and deed count, the cast includes a German chief of detectives who has good reason to help Jack; a band of Aryan racists eager to pursue their own nefarious agenda; and the shadowy American who intends to enrich himself at the expense of countless innocent lives. This plot-driven story has the usual clichés (a race against time, highly-charged romantic encounters between Jack and his sexy lover, and a final violent confrontation), and the author makes no attempt to delineate his characters with any degree of subtlety. "Night School" may not be great literature, but Child doesn't pretend to be Tolstoy. He delivers a fast-paced novel of action-adventure that has enough thrills to entertain fans of this long-running series.
