From Library Journal
Since its debut, McBroom's has become the bible of the used camera industry, and there's nary a dealer who doesn't own one. The book also found a following among camera buffs but was of little interest to the general public and therefore a marginal purchase for most libraries. The advent of online auction services like eBay, however, has completely changed that. If you're looking to sell grandpa's old Graflex or your dad's dusty Nikon, McBroom will tell you what to expect for it. This latest incarnation has been revised to update prices and now includes the latest tech developments, such as APS and digital cameras. This edition retains the standard format of an introduction to each camera brand, detailing the models and the years they were built followed by charts listing each body and lens and their estimated value based on physical condition. There is also information on accessories such as flashes and light meters. The book is capped off with a roster of manufacturers' URLs. Nobody thinking of buying or selling used camera gear either online or through a dealer should make a move without consulting McBroom's. Recommended for all public libraries.

From Booklist
Formerly McBroom's Price Guide to Modern Cameras, this work has been retitled to better reflect its primary purpose: to provide prices and descriptions of popular used photo equipment. Special or limited-edition models have been omitted, as this is not a price guide to collectibles. McBroom is a photographer, writer, and camera collector.

Following the introduction, buying pointers are offered for new and used photo equipment. Individual coverage is given to 35mm cameras (Canon, Leica, Minolta, Olympus), independent manufacturers of lenses, medium-format cameras, large-format cameras, and large-format lenses. Exposure meters, strobes, and accessories are also described.

Entries may include a picture and provide a history of the camera and pricing information. Prices of new equipment are also noted, as this allows the buyer to make an informed decision when purchasing used items. Prices for used equipment are based on information collected from businesses, photography magazines, and camera swap meets. Value is based on cosmetic condition, as it is assumed that an item's mechanical, electrical, and optical features are in good working order. Condition is noted using an evaluative system from Shutterbug magazine: new; mint (new condition, but previously sold); mint minus (lower end of the mint range); excellent (light signs of use); and user (noticeable signs of use). A glossary and index complete the work.

While there are such guides to collectible cameras as Price Guide to Antique and Classic Cameras (6th ed., Centennial Photo Service, 1987) and numerous articles in various photography magazines describing new and used equipment, McBroom has created a convenient reference for all popular camera brands. Libraries serving camera buffs will want to consider purchase.

Misleading title: NOT UP TO DATE
By Older Dog
As one reviewer notes, this book is now in print 7 years, which makes it somewhat older than that given the time taken for preparation and publishing.

Some of the information is useful. But the cameras that were new way back then are not new now. Used film camera prices vary according to collectability, usability for those who choose to use film at least on occasion, and sometimes for no good reason. But there's no connection to anything that was true when this book was published.

Digital cameras are largely replacing film, like it or not. A book published about higher end digital cameras today would be largely out of date in 18 months and incomplete well before that.

The primary value of this book is that it's almost a historical short book on the value of cameras that one author considered worthwhile in 1999-2000. It gives you a picture of reasonable camera outfits. Otherwise, virtually useless.

An excellent resource for older cameras 35mm cameras, allowing comparisons of functionality, construction, and historical perspective. The pricing info of used equipment is dated, but useful for comparative purposes in today's market.

The Routledge Handbook of English Language Teaching (Routledge Handbooks in Applied Linguistics)From Routledge

The Routledge Handbook of English Language Teaching is the definitive reference volume for postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students of Applied Linguistics, ELT/TESOL, and Language Teacher Education, and for ELT professionals engaged in in-service teacher development and/or undertaking academic study.

Progressing from ‘broader’ contextual issues to a ‘narrower’ focus on classrooms and classroom discourse, the volume’s inter-related themes focus on:

  • ELT in the world: contexts and goals
  • planning and organising ELT: curriculum, resources and settings
  • methods and methodology: perspectives and practices
  • second language learning and learners
  • teaching language: knowledge, skills and pedagogy
  • understanding the language classroom.

The Handbook’s 39 chapters are written by leading figures in ELT from around the world. Mindful of the diverse pedagogical, institutional and social contexts for ELT, they convincingly present the key issues, areas of debate and dispute, and likely future developments in ELT from an applied linguistics perspective.

Throughout the volume, readers are encouraged to develop their own thinking and practice in contextually appropriate ways, assisted by discussion questions and suggestions for further reading that accompany every chapter.

'English language teaching (ELT) is now an immensely complex field of research and practice. This volume admirably captures the scope of the major themes that must now underpin informed ELT. The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, by Maria Augusta Trapp

With nearly 1,500 Broadway performances, six Tony Awards, more than three million albums sold, and five Academy Awards, The Sound of Music, based on the lives of Maria, the baron, and their singing children, is as familiar to most of us as our own family history. But much about the real-life woman and her family was left untold.

Here, Baroness Maria Augusta Trapp tells in her own beautiful, simple words the extraordinary story of her romance with the baron, their escape from Nazi-occupied Austria, and their life in America.

About the Author
Maria Augusta Kutschera was born on a train en route to Vienna just before midnight on January 26, 1905. Her mother died when she was only two years old and her father left her with an elderly cousin so that he could be free to travel. She experienced a lonely and very strict upbringing without any siblings or other children in the household. She was raised a socialist and an atheist and was actively cynical towards all religions. It was during a visit to a church to hear a Bach concert that her mind was changed when she heard the words of a well-known priest, Father Kronseder. Her meeting with him led to her entering a convent to become a nun. While she was devoted to the convent life, she was taken away from the outdoor activities she once thrived on. Her doctor, concerned that her health was failing, helped the nuns to decide to send Maria to the home of retied naval captain Georg Von Trapp, to be governess to his bedridden daughter. On November 26, 1927, Maria and Georg were married. The rest is history.

because I love the movie The Sound of Music and I've always ...
By Carina Rodrigues
I decided to read this book, of course, because I love the movie The Sound of Music and I've always been curious about what happened to the Von Trapps after they crossed those mountains, and I've always wanted to know how their lives changed when they came to America.

The plot of the movie takes up only the first few chapters of the book and is, honestly, quite different in many respects. Maria, who is a teacher, is sent to tutor one of the Von Trapp children before taking her vows and becoming a full-fledged nun. The children all have different names in real life, by the way. Not sure why. Anyway, Maria goes to the Von Trapp home, meets the children and their father, who does have a whistle to call his children but is otherwise a very nice man and father who only avoids his kids because they remind him too much of his dead wife. The Captain is engaged to a princess (not baroness) who quickly leaves the picture after telling Maria that the Captain is in love with her. The family begins to make music together, Georg proposes, and the Mother Superior forces Maria to marry him even though she doesn't really want to. Hitler takes over Austria and the Von Trapps leave Europe in a very legal way without being chased by armed Nazis.

Then the real bulk of the story begins, when Maria tells of their journey to and life in America. It was all interesting, albeit a little too focused on religion for my liking...but to each his own. There were some things that I found odd as I read about the lives of the Von Trapps and their ten children (yes, Maria and Georg had three more on top of the original seven) and all the honorary family members they met along the way. Most noticeably, I thought the kids were TOO nice. They never disobeyed their parents, they went to mass every morning, they prayed every day, they were not the least bit distracted or corrupted by life on the road in America, they never complained about wearing those traditional Austrian costumes everywhere they went. Those kids seemed like robots, honestly, especially when you stop and realize that they are now full grown adults and their parents still treat them like the children they were back in Austria. Overall, glad I read this. It satisfied my curiosity, but doesn't compare with the awesomeness that is the movie

I recommend it; just know that Maria didn't reveal her downside (who does!) Agathe sheds light in her book though
By Pippin606
Read this first and then read Agathe von Trapp's biography. I still love the von Trapps and the movie (which the family didn't like). It's just that Maria really paints a fuzzy warm picture. In direct contradiction to Agathe's take on things; Maria makes it sound like the children didn't know what music was until she came to them with her guitar. Agathe said there was a ton of music with her Mother and Father, they played multiple instruments and sang as a family.

Captain von Trapp was a sweet, kind hearted man and father. Maria, on the other hand would have these volatile blow ups and then quickly get over it. From all the info I have been able to get, there was a lot of good that truly happened in that family. But Maria was domineering and driven. They created incredible music together and it seems they all loved doing that. They had their summer music camp for years......just amazing and wonderful.

Worth reading, especially for kids, not exactly a biography
By Amy D.
Maria Trapp's book reads a little bit like one of those Landmark biographies written for kids back in the 50s. That is not to say that the book isn't good. It is! But there's very little in the way of dates, historical background, reflection, analysis, introspection or anything negative. Maria tells her tale in a largely unimaginative style with mostly just the facts of how things happened. Note that, as the title indicates, this is a book about the family's singing career and life in the U.S., and not strictly speaking an account of Maria's life.

Thus, most disappointing to me was the almost complete lack of information surrounding the family's flight from Austria after the European phase of their singing career had begun. Similarly, Maria tells next to nothing about her romance with the Baron except for one little whimsical anecdote, and, then, suddenly they were married! Nor was there a shred of information about Maria's childhood or life prior to entering the Trapp household.

The highlight of the book for me was Maria von Trapp's deep devotion to her Catholic faith which I found really very inspiring. Her faith permeated everything she did. This is especially apparent in her touching account of her husband's untimely death, one of the few incidents that she reflects upon with the reader, exposing her thoughts and sharing her fears.

Maria must have certainly been a force to be reckoned with, a woman of action. You know, "how do you keep a wave upon the sand" and all the rest of those lyrics. In fact, there are times when I had almost had enough of her can-do, Climb-Every-Mountain attitude. How much can one person do anyway! At first glance, she might seem to be a carefree, light-hearted spirit, but she was an extremely capable, talented woman with an entrepreneurial streak who usually triumphed over adversity through common sense and persistence-- --and perhaps a large ego?

Hers was an extraordinary life that might be better told by someone other than herself. However, I felt edified and enriched for having read the book and recommend it happily. I think this book might find its best audience among parents who would like their kids, especially their girls, ages 11 and up, to read about a strong-willed woman of deep faith and traditional values who was successful and influential in pretty much everything she did.

This book won't just sit on your shelf.
By DebC
This is the best book on drawing that I have seen. I have read through the book several times and now I am going through page by page and practicing each step. His instructions are clear and easy to follow with drawings to help illustrate each step.
I highly recommend this book.

It's Just That No One Taught You How
By DreamEye
I took oil painting classes from Bill Martin 40 years ago and still think of him as the best art teacher I ever had. Why? Because he had a knack for laying out an organized and readily understandable structure...step by step. One of those steps is drawing. Don't think you can't draw; it's just that no one taught you the basics. How wonderful that Bill Martin wrote it all down...that his gift for teaching lives on. Plus he was such a good guy. Now all you have to do is practice, practice, practice.

Still Relevant in 2003!!
By Amazon Customer
but the lessons on those pages are taught with such clarity they will stick with you and help when you go further with your talents into areas like colored pencil, watercolor, pen and ink, acrylics or even oils.
The lessons include things like perspective, a lesson taught in just about every book on art written today. It seems so many books cover this topic because it is such a hard topic to teach - notice I say teach and not learn. If it was easy to teach then more of us would learn it and would not have such a hard time with the concept. Bill Martin has touched something in his lessons on perspective, at least for me, and I will never have the same difficulty with perspective again. At least if I do in the future, I will have this little gem to pick up and refer to! He does not cover this topic quickly, but goes into it slowly and covers it quite completely, as he does most difficult topics. I will no sell the four or five books on my shelves devoted to perspective, books purchased to help clarify a topic once so unclear.
The only downside about his book is the section on color theory, which could be much more indepth. There is only a small chapter covering it at the end, almost as though it was an afterthought. It would have been great to see Mr. Martin tackle the important and often difficult topic of color with the same skill he had handled perspective and so many others in this great little book!

Definitive Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim, Vol. 1, by Alex Raymond

  • IDW's Library of American Comics is producing The Definitive Flash Gordon & Jungle Jim as part of the Ultimate Alex Raymond Collection. Edited by Eisner Award-winner Dean Mullaney, The Definitive Flash Gordon & Jungle Jim will present every Sunday by Raymond from both classic strips together for the first time, in the oversized 12" x 16" champagne edition format.
  • Created by Raymond in 1934, Flash Gordon is arguably the most famous science fiction comic strip of all time. It follows the adventures of the title character and his companions, Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov, as they leave Earth to discover the source of meteors that are threatening the planet, and get waylaid on the planet Mongo, where they battle the evil Ming the Merciless. The three Earthlings encounter one strange race after another, from the water-breathing Shark-Men of the Undersea Kingdom, the winged Hawkmen, and the ferocious Tusk-Men. All the while, Flash finds himself in the arms of one beautiful woman after another — much to Dale Arden's chagrin.
  • Jungle Jim was created as a strip topper for Flash Gordon, and followed the life of Jim Bradley, who fought pirates, slave traders, and assorted villains in the exotic Southeast Asia of the 1930s. This neglected Raymond classic also features Jim's native cohort Kolu and femme fatale Lille DeVrille.

Finally someone gets it right!!
By Diego Cordoba
This must certainly be the definitive edition/book collection of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon comic strip. It's reproduced along with the original Jungle Jim topper. You have already heard about the book's huge size. Now what about the quality inside? Contrary to what one reviewer said, complaining about the quality, please bear in mind that for this volume they scanned the original newspaper Sunday pages were the strip was printed. Those of you expecting to see a book containing scans from Alex Raymond's original art can keep on dreaming, as that will never be possible (most of the original art is already lost or scattered all over the world and in the hands of art collectors and fans). Sure, there are a couple of imperfections due to the printing process of the time (the mid-thirties), but I've compared this book with the volumes Kitchen Sink put out in the late eighties and/or early nineties (which by the way, many fans believe to be the definitive version, quality-wise), and this version by IDW is far superior. I don't know what Sunday newspapers they used, but they certainly got hold of the best. You can really see Raymond's bold brush strokes come through very clearly and uncluttered, and the color is constantly subdued, clear and not garish or murky at all, as opposed to that of the Kitchen Sink book again (which at the time, I never thought could be topped). Also, for those of you who might believe the artwork isn't big enough, it's actually larger than those of the previous other books published in America or elsewhere. Though I must say that I never got the version published by Checker, as they had apparently used the same source as Kitchen Sink. Anyone out there who has those books might want to compare them with this one by IDW also.

This book is printed on heavy stock mat paper, to avoid the glare you get from reading on a more glossy and shiny paper. Plus, as I said before, you get the Jungle Jim topper, which has rarely been reprinted and/or collected in book-form before.

By the way, Titan is planning on reprinting the Flash Gordon strip as well. Well, they've got a tough book to beat. This certainly will remain the definitive version of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon. I can hardly wonder how it can be topped or surpassed, this side of getting hold of the original artwork, which is an impossibility. And since this version already surpasses by far the one by Kitchen Sink, I believe it will remain the definitive one.

If you're a fan of Alex Raymond and Flash Gordon, this is the book to BUY!!! And remember, you're getting Jungle Jim as well for the same price. If that isn't the comic strip deal of the century, I don't know what is.

Now, IDW, about that other strip Alex Raymond drew... you know, the one Dashiell Hammett wrote, what was it? Secret agent something or another? How about publishing it in the near future as well. I missed the version Kitchen Sink put out way back, and only have a French edition...

Look at the size of that thing!!!
By Tim Hewitt
Just received my copy of "Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim" Vol. 1. Wow. Now this is a book that makes an impression. It is without question the largest comic strip reprint volume I've ever seen (considerably larger than Fantagraphic's current generously sized - and lovely - "Prince Valiant" series and their even larger than those "Captain Easy" volumes). There's not a lot I can really say about Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon that you don't already know. If you're looking at this item or reading this review, I'm sure you don't have to be sold on Flash. You already want it. At approximately 16 x 12, these Flash Gordon pages are printed at or near the size readers would have seen them on first publication. AND you get the pages as they've never been reprinted with the "Jungle Jim" strips at the top of the page. Size aside, the entire book is what you would expect of a quality IDW/LAC production (although I can already hear some getting ready to complain that the strips are printed too small!). Quality paper, sharp reproduction and vivid colors, this probably as good as Flash Gordon (and Jungle Jim) ever looked. And these Sunday pages from 1934 - 1936 are still early Alex Raymond before his art really begins to soar. The best is yet to come. I can't wait for the remaining three volumes in the series, but I may have to build and extra room onto the house just to have some place to put them!

Definitive edition? Yes, but.
By V. Orselli
Reviewers have been calling the IDW edition of Flash Gordon the "definitive edition." They may be right, but this is not a black and white proposition. Kitchen Sink can still be considered for that claim.

First as far as strip sizes, prior to the strip going to the full page format, the IDW reprint strips are slightly bigger (less than 1/4 inch) than the Kitchen Sink Edition. Almost unnoticeable. Both editions still reprint those early Sunday strips in too small a size. However, when they go to the full page format, the Kitchen Sink edition is significantly bigger than the IDW -like 1/3 bigger. However, Kitchen Sink splits each page into 2 landscape pages. I prefer the original full newspaper page format. In the later strips, non full-page format. IDW comes out ahead.

Sharpness of reproduction. Kitchen Sink's reproductions are arguably better than IDW, quite sharp and brightly colored, and the effect is enhanced by their using glossy paper, similar to printing a photo on photographic paper rather than on matte paper. However, I think the matte effect is closer to the original newspaper version.

Other IDW plusses: IDW's reprinting of Jungle Jim at the top of each page. Jungle Jim previously was only available in a Pacific Comics edition- some 12-16 large landscape pages- $15.00 each volume and some 35-40 volumes. Quite costly. IDW's inclusion restores the original Sunday page format and gives the readers an excellent bonus. Also the miscellaneous features at the top of some Sunday pages (Flash Gordon, Dale Arden in various space fashions, etc ) are a nice touch.

Overall then, IDW comes out ahead. And the book truly is a work of art. But the Kitchen Sink series is still quite good.

Review
"With Bill Gates: A Biography Becraft has provided a concise, fairly thorough, and well-written biography of one of the most influential business leaders of the past 20 years. . . . The book is well written, with little or no obvious bias. . . . The introduction to the series included with this book states that it (and the rest of the series) is intended for public and school libraries. It would be well suited for these libraries, and could be useful in academic libraries serving community and junior colleges, as well as those supporting lower-level baccalaureate students." - ARBA

Very engaging and well-written!!
By Rose-Marie Speck
Very informative and well-written book. As an educator, I would highly recommend this book to other educators to use as quality reading material for high school students and above. The Microsoft Trial chapter was especially well-written. Dr. Becraft breaks down complex legal terms in a way that students can understand and he provides a historical context for the court cases. Very engaging reading for both high school students and adults alike.

Working Hard and Fighting Hard

It surprises me that the Charity will end when Bill and Melinda go, According to Bill Microsoft will be gone or not that important any more. His treatment by the government is similar to what Rockerfellow went through. So history just repeats itself and are just a bug.

In the tradition of John le Carré, the bestselling, impossible-to-put-down, espionage thriller that is “a primer in twenty-first century spying” (The New York Times Book Review), written with the insider detail that only a veteran CIA operative could know—and shortlisted for an Edgar Award.

State intelligence officer Dominika Egorova struggles to survive in the cast-iron bureaucracy of post-Soviet intelligence. Drafted against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress in the service, Dominika is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a first-tour CIA officer who handles the CIA’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers, trained in their respective spy schools, collide in a charged atmosphere of tradecraft, deception, and, inevitably, a forbidden spiral of carnal attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America’s most valuable mole in Moscow. Seeking revenge against her soulless masters, Dominika begins a fateful double life, recruited by the CIA to ferret out a high-level traitor in Washington; hunt down a Russian illegal buried deep in the US military and, against all odds, to return to Moscow as the new-generation penetration of Putin’s intelligence service. Dominika and Nathaniel’s impossible love affair and twisted spy game come to a deadly conclusion in the shocking climax of this electrifying, up-to-the minute spy thriller.

Taking place in today’s Russia, still ruled with an iron fist by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Red Sparrow displays author Jason Matthews’s insider knowledge of espionage, counter-espionage, surveillance tradecraft, recruiting spies, interrogation, and intelligence gathering. As The Washington Post hails, this is a “sublime and sophisticated debut…a first-rate novel as noteworthy for its superior style as for its gripping depiction of a secretive world.”

The spy-thriller is back in full force thanks to newcomer and CIA insider Jason Matthews.

Set in unnervingly accurate present-day Russia, where Putin’s influence is omnipresent, Red Sparrow follows two intelligence officers who are targeted against each other: Nate Nash, a young, ambitious, sometimes naive CIA officer, and Dominika Egorova, a willful, beautiful Russian ballerina turned spy due to unfortunate circumstances. When we first meet Nate he is beginning the most important job of his fledgling career—handling MARBLE, a high-ranking Russian intelligence officer who is giving information to the Americans, largely considered to be the CIA’s most valuable asset—while Dominika’s first foray in the field is off to a more tenuous start. After being injured and thus forced to leave her beloved ballet, her uncle, a high ranking state intelligence official lures her in, eventually forcing her to attend “Sparrow School” to train as an espionage courtesan. After successfully finishing her training, Dominika is sent to Helsinki where the young Nate has taken up residence after a near disaster in Moscow. The Russians had discovered that he was gaining inside information, tipping them off to the existence of a high-level mole. Dominika is charged with the task of discovering the mole’s identity by getting close to Nash—a delectable honey trap for the brash American. What begins as a relatively simple assignment leads to a development of fatal double lives, dangerous spy games, and treacherous secrets. As the two face-off, tentatively making moves, Dominika begins to learn the true nature of those who control her, and suddenly Nate and the people he works for begin to look more and more attractive. Disappointed and humiliated by her handlers, and with nowhere to turn, Dominika is recruited by Nate (or is she?). Against the rules, the two fall in and out of bed in various cities, and come close to falling dangerously in love. They struggle mightily to trust each other, and to trust themselves.

I read till 11 and woke up at 5 a.m. three days in a row to finish this book as fast as I possibly could. If it doesn't supplant The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as the next mammoth read, and if it doesn't take its place alongside le Carre's The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, the love of literature and jaw-dropping thrills really is dead. When I finished the book the day was just dawning, as it always is in this novel, only in the novel the fated characters, filled with melancholy, romance, venom, and belly-aching humor (this book can be laugh out loud funny), are usually eating well and wondering when it'll be lights out for them. Jason Matthews has "reported" this book for 30 years, working it all out in the "real world," and one wonders who he is, mostly: the young, "naive" Nate Nash; the knock-out, petulant heroine Dominika, whom Quentin Tarantino and Doctor Zhivago both might've loved; or the Gus Grissom-like Gable, a CIA chief who dispenses life-lessons to the young Nate—a muscled hen clucking and stirring a bubbling sauce over a stove. There is not a false note in the amazing ventriloquisms that are the conjurer's art we call literature. There are sentences as exciting to read as Eliot's "The Wasteland" (cf. the description of a moist, pale toadie scuttling along a hall; downright spooky, an image I cannot get rid of); or the majestic, floor-board creaking opening of Cormac McCarthy's All The Pretty Horses. The granular sweep of the authorial vision is a telescope still warm from Tolstoy's hands. There's a scene in here better by ten than Bogart looking down at Ingrid. I learned as much about the former Soviets and the new Russians, and our U.S. of A., as I have ever gleaned from the hardest working journalists writing today. Halfway through, I was afraid Vladimir Putin would find out I was reading Red Sparrow and have me arrested. With its ripped-from-the headlines appeal, real life spy craft details, and thrilling international action that takes us to Helsinki, Moscow, Athens, Rome, and Washington, D.C., I have to say that I have not read a more exciting, gripping novel in a long time. And the best part is this: the ending of this novel makes it clear that this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing from Jason Matthews.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Many spy novelists, including Ian Fleming and John le Carré, actually worked as intelligence agents. Add to that list Jason Matthews, whose 33 years as a CIA field operative enriches his first novel with startling verisimilitude, from griping about meddling, deskbound bureaucrats at Langley to the flat statement that Russia’s SVR, successor to the KGB, sees the Cold War as alive and well, and that in Putin’s Russia, “nothing has changed since Stalin.” Perhaps this is novelistic license, but it feels genuine. That sense of authenticity, along with vividly drawn characters, much detail about tradecraft, and an appropriately convoluted plot that centers on moles in both the SVR and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence make this a compelling and propulsive tale of spy-versus-spy. Matthews’ characters are variously fascinating, eccentric, and truly odious, including a beautiful Russian woman with the gift of synesthesia, forced into “sparrow school” to learn espionage through seduction; a brilliant and flamboyantly odd head of CIA counterintelligence; a “poisonous” dwarf whose reveries always return to torture and murder during Russia’s Afghanistan debacle; and many more. Locales including Moscow, Helsinki, Rome, and Athens seem knowingly evoked, and each brief chapter concludes with a recipe for some food a character has just eaten. Red Sparrow is greater than the sum of its fine parts. Espionage aficionados will love this one. --Thomas Gaughan

Review
"Jason Matthews, who became an authority on the Kremlin during his 33 years as a CIA operations officer, has written an espionage novel, Red Sparrow, in which Putin makes a cameo -- read it and you too may conclude that no one on the planet knows the Russian president better. You too may also conclude that Red Sparrow is the best espionage novel you've ever read." (Keith Thomson Huffington Post)

“Veteran CIA operative-turned-novelist Matthews keeps the trouble popping in Red Sparrow, but relentless drama is just one of the high points of this sublime and sophisticated debut… Red Sparrow isn’t just a fast-paced thriller — it’s a first-rate novel as noteworthy for its superior style as for its gripping depiction of a secretive world. While many former CIA agents and MI6 operatives have turned to writing fiction in retirement, Matthews joins a select few who seem as strong at their second careers as at their first.” (Art Taylor The Washington Post)

"A primer in 21st-century spying. Matthews' former foes in Moscow will be choking on their blinis when they read how much has been revealed about their tradecraft...terrifically good." (The New York Times Book Review)

"A smart, intriguing tale rooted in his own experience...Fans of the genre's masters including John Le Carre and Ian Fleming will happily embrace Matthews' central spy." (USA Today)

"This debut novel from a 33-year CIA veteran delivers action as pulse-pounding as it is authentic." (New York Post)

“Matthews’s exceptional first novel will please fans of classic spy fiction…The author’s 33-year career in the CIA allows him to showcase all the tradecraft and authenticity that readers in this genre demand…[a] complex, high-stakes plot.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“The author, a veteran CIA field agent, liberally salts his thriller with realistic tradecraft, horrific villainy, and stunning plot twists as the opponents vie for control…An intense descent into a vortex of carnal passion, career brutality, and smart tradecraft, this thriller evokes the great Cold War era of espionage…Readers of bloodthirsty spy and suspense will welcome this debut from a writer who supersizes his spies.” (Library Journal, starred review)

“Matthews’ first novel, a globe-trotting spy thriller, features enough action to satisfy even the most demanding of adrenaline junkies…The author’s CIA background and the smart dialogue make this an entertaining tale for spy-novel enthusiasts.” (Kirkus)

"Not since the good old days of the Cold War has a classic spy thriller like Red Sparrow come along. Jason Matthews is not making it up; he has lived this life and this story, and it shows on every page. High-level espionage, pulse-pounding danger, sex, double agents and double crosses. What more can any reader want?" (Nelson DeMille)

“A great and dangerous spy-game is being played today between Russian intelligence and the CIA. Very few people know about it, including many of our politicians in Washington. But Jason Matthews does, and his thrilling Red Sparrow takes us deep inside this treacherous world. He’s an insider’s insider. He knows the secrets. And he is also a masterful story-teller. I loved this book and could not put it down. Neither will you.” (Vince Flynn)

4 1/2 Stars -- Definitely Worth Reading But You'll Need To Be Patient With It!
By bobbewig
I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and the publisher in return for an honest review, which follows.

I am an avid reader of thrillers and am particularly a fan of espionage thrillers. So, I figured that Red Sparrow would be "right up my alley." However, the book's slow pace during the first hundred pages kept me undecided as to whether I was liking it or not. This is because it took me awhile to get used to the fact that Red Sparrow wasn't going to be a book filled with lots of physical action -- e.g., fist fights, gun fights, killings, dramatic car chases, etc.-- that I've come to expect from books of this type.

Soon after, however, I realized that Red Sparrow is an espionage thriller that is several notches above the typical book in this genre. It is filled with many fully dimensional, credible characters and location descriptions that make you feel that you are there experiencing all of the deceptions, schemes, and double crosses involving the various CIA and Russian intelligence agents and politicians --some of whom are moles for both sides. Further, it becomes quickly obvious that first-time author and former CIA operative, Jason Matthews, really knows his subject matter, as Red Sparrow is filled with an abundance of information about the inner workings within both the U.S. and Russian intelligence organizations that is not only interesting, it serves to create an atmosphere that keeps the reader shaking his/her head in wonder.

As if this isn't enough to entice you to read Red Sparrow, perhaps the following facts will convince you to do so: (1) two of its main characters, CIA agent Nathaniel Nash and Russian agent Dominika Egorova, will stay in your mind long after finishing the book, and will have you looking forward to the author writing at least one more book featuring them to find out what the future holds for them; and (2) its plot is filled with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing as to what happens next, and an ending by which you will most likely be very surprised.

Highly recommended to those thriller readers willing to be patient enough to finish a book that will ultimately make them consider Red Sparrow to be among the better thrillers they are likely to read this year.

top-shelf emotional rollercoaster
By Daniel Stuelpnagel
This book will hold you in its grip. Jason Matthews rivals the masters of the genre, I cannot remember ever being so riveted by the characters in a spy story as they get pulled deeper into a terrifying series of concentric events.

The twists leading up to the most magnificent turn, which is a pivotal yet deceptively simple idea that unfolds throughout the third act, are elegantly choreographed, yet while reading I wasn't thinking about technical or structural expertise, just totally immersed in the story, which deftly shifts back and forth between the humanity of the characters, the incessant tradecraft and counterespionage, and the intense and shocking violence inherent in the most crucial of conspiracies, with huge stakes and an ever-expanding web of motivated operatives.

It's all there, travel to dozens of exotic locations around the world, taste the food, see the sights, witness the exchange of violence and deception between intelligence services, and get completely wrapped up in the astounding love story embedded in the midst of ruthless treachery and radical choices that leave the participants in the spy game a dwindling set of unpalatable options.

Hero and heroine are put to the test time and again, it was all I could do not to read the whole book in one sitting, I finished the final eighty pages at eight in the morning and can't wait for time to pass so I can read it again.

The women in this story erupt from the pages in fully-realized passionate motivation to take charge of engineering intricate plots, there is often a freakish, scary, next-level psychopathic killer waiting around the corner, unpredictable and plausible in the extreme.

Beautifully written, yet the author lets his expertise yield to the control of the characters, the book takes on its own life, the artistry and humility of a lifetime career in the service of national security enable him to deliver the goods without making himself visible.

An organic and seductive story with relentless intrigue, immensely compelling characters and a multi-faceted heroine that will break your heart as you yearn for more.

A must-read--even if you're not an avid reader of spy thrillers
By Greg M.
Red Sparrow is a phenomenal read. Before this novel, I'd never read a proper spy thriller in the vein of John LeCarre, but I know now what I've been missing. The plot is intricate--but not too intricate that you ever feel lost, and its turns and fully-developed characters inevitably plant movie-quality images in your head as you read. (After a heated auction, the eventual film will be in the hands of the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Schindler's List, Moneyball, and Gangs of New York.) There's plenty of spycraft, thanks to Matthews' 33 years in the CIA, and not a single double-cross, brush pass, or canary trap feels inauthentic. Highly, highly recommended.

From Publishers Weekly
In this new book by Van Allsburg, twice a winner of the Caldecott Medal, the theme of an outsider's point-of-view (touched upon most recently in his The Stranger ) is expanded. Accustomed to the orderly and uneventful life in the ant hole, all the ants enter the bizarre world of a kitchen in the search for sugar crystals for the queen. Two greedy ants stay behind in the sugar bowl, eating their fill and then falling asleep. Their slumbers end when a giant scoop drops them into a sea of boiling brown coffee. Further mishaps include a heated stay in the toaster, a hazardous swirl in the garbage disposal and a zap in an electrical outlet. When the ant troops return, the two bad ants gladly rejoin their friends and head for the safety of home. In this work, the hazards of nonconformity are clear. The narration has the feel of early newsreels where the broadcaster described unknown phenomena in clipped, clinical language: "A strange force passed through the wet ants. They were stunned senseless and blown out of the holes like bullets from a gun." The resilient ants and the eerie landscapes are portrayed in strong black-and-white images, enriched by deep brown, purple, slate, gold and steely blue colors; Van Allsburg, playing with perspective, creates marvelous contrasts and images. But although Two Bad Ants is visually different from its predecessors, it shares the same strong style, dazzling artwork and whimsy that characterizes all of the artist's work. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-5 In this brief tale of the adventures of two runaway ants, Van Allsburg once again gives children a visual puzzle to solvein this case identifying common household appliances from an ant's point of view. When a troop of ants are sent to retrieve sugar crystals from a kitchen, two ants stay behind to feast and go to sleep in the sugar bowl. When morning comes they are successively stirred into a cup of coffee, almost swallowed, toasted with an english muffin, whirled through a garbage disposal, and stunned senseless in an electrical outlet. While some children will enjoy identifying the highly magnified objects, others will wonder how the ants have managed to survive any one of these disasters. The truants return home in one piece, and the last few lines supply a pallid and oddly moralistic conclusion to the story. The book is a visual tour-de-force. The highly linear, hard-edged drawings look like fine etchings which have been magnifieda technique which enhances the sense of being reduced to ant size. The colors applied in flat fields are primarily limited to earth tones and gray, combined with touches of pure white and black in lines and fields of almost luminous intensity. The intensity of the visual experience overpowers the story, which is a flat, rather cold vehicle, an excuse for a visual game which will appeal to the intellect of children older than typical picture book readers. Perfect.
By Nola Parent
My great nephew is 7 years old and his class at school has a secret reader which is a students relative. I knew a few months ahead of time I would be the secret reader for April 11, 2013. I search on line for a great book and the title of the book caught my eye. I read the other reviews and it sounded perfect for his 1st grade class.

It was a hit the children in his class were very tentative with every word I read they loved the book from cover to cover. It was just perfect. It made my day that they were so pleased and my
great nephew just loved it. He was squarming in his seat with excitement waiting to see what was going to happen to the Two Bad Ants.

Striking artwork, captivating story
By Char
First, the organization that shipped is top-notch--timely, everything in great condition.
Second, I pull this book out whenever ants appear in our classroom, once or twice a year. It's a good reminder to clean up after ourselves carefully (not just because an adult requested!). This book also offers a lovely way to consider perspective. Children spontaneously suggested what they thought the moral of the story might be, even though a moral is not emphasized in the book. It's a favorite... children love to hear it more than once.

Life in the body of an ant.......
By Jersey teacher
This is a hilarious book about size and the BIG WORLD, and also about the reason for following rules.

Two ants start out on a journey to retrieve a blissfully, wonderful substance to feed the queen, and end up "playing hookie." Their funny antics, discovering the world of humans, lands them into one catastrophe after another.

As a read-aloud, you will have instant attention, and good for guessing what item is causing the ants to flounder.
As a reading level book, it's a sure thing for grade 2, or higher grade 1. Kids will love and identify with the characters, in size and antics.
