A long time ago, I picked up a first edition copy in an estate sale in New York City. Was so bummed when I realized I'd lent it but didn't know who. I just had to pick up another copy. No matter one's walk in life, this is a book every family should have.

The Etiquette Standard

Amy Vanderbilt remains by far one of the true leaders of her field. I have read and learned from her since I was a teenager. Today, as the owner of North America's only registered Butler & Household Management School, I can assure you that this is one of three books that we consult for any and all etiquette questions. A must-have in any professional reference library! I have three copies, one in each of my residences and on the bookshelf beside my office! Why is this such a staple in my library? Because of the gracious tone that Mrs. Vanderbilt uses in her writing and the accuracy of her material Mrs. Vanderbilt's a pleasure to read.

What's not to like? An historical classic

Of course times have changes but this book still has some great fundamentals. I can't imagine a better source for learning how to address and introduce minor royalty, government officials etc.
I loved some of the talk on bedding and personal versus business stationary but I had a great chuckle over luncheon table settings. Apparently I've been remiss at not having cigarettes and matches at each place setting! My how SOME things have changed. But being a good host never goes out of style.
