Review

"Minor Emergencies follows a simple format in the form of a brief introduction to a topic, bulleted points on things the physician should do (and things the physician should not do), and a concluding evidence-based discussion. Most chapters are brief and heavily illustrated with helpful figures. One of the best features of this book is the associated videos that can be accessed using a Quick Response scanner from a mobile device. A list at the beginning of the book contains all the video Quick Response codes in order, and a quick mobile device scan brings up a 2-3 minute video of specific techniques or procedures. These can be easily accessed on a clinical shift just before starting a procedure.

There are multiple techniques, photographs, and videos in each chapter to ensure that the practitioner will find something that works. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on removal of fishhooks because it contains several videos to illustrate the appropriate techniques.

Overall, Minor Emergencies makes a fantastic companion for any emergency department shift. It will offer something for even the most experienced physician and is a great resource for medical students or residents just starting their career in emergency medicine."

-Peter Moffett, MD, Annals of Emergency Medicine, July 2013

"Distills literally decades of experience by the author into concisely written guides to almost two hundred minor complaints." ― Journal of Emergency Medicine, review of the first edition

"This is an excellent resource to have in an office, urgent care setting, or emergency department. There are few other books that simplify the approach to these minor emergencies and provide short, to-the-point instructional guidance. Shortening the title to Minor Emergencies also conveys better what the book covers. Overall, it will help readers remember the steps to take with the plethora of minor emergencies they see on a regular basis and refresh their memory about treatment of minor emergencies they don't often see."- Russell Stroud, MSN, BSN, ACNP-BC (University of Arkansas) 3 star Doody rating!

One of a Kind
By Harry Hoodwink
I originally purchased the 2nd edition of this when I started residency. As soon as I saw the 3rd edition was out, I immediately preordered it.

The biggest obstacle of the 2nd edition, lack of mobile access, has been resolved with the expert consult online access. Now, you can login to the website anywhere you are (Urgent Care Clinic, ER, Denny's at 3am), and look up how to treat a dislocated contact lens or bleeding after dental surgery.

This book has many pearls for topics that you will not find in any other major emergency textbook. It is well worth the investment for any primary care or emergency medicine library, ESPECIALLY since you can now access it online and not have to lug it three miles uphill in your backpack on your fixie (or is that just me).

I have not done a thorough search, but so far it seems that some of the out-of-date references and advice have been updated with new literature support and I have not found one glaring error yet. Lastly, the cover picture is priceless, and has not changed throughout the editions. I have had the patient who had a bug fly in their ear, came into the ED, and the only treatment that was necessary was to tell them to take their hand off their ear so the bug could fly out.

Thanks, Dr. Buttaravoli!!!

A MUST HAVE FOR NEW GRADS
By nikkyani
I am a new grad that recently started working as a PA in the emergency department fast track/ambulatory section. I found this resource as an extremely valuable tool when helping me with the additional details and key points I should not and better not miss. Each illness/injury starts with the presentation of that specific condition followed by a "what to do" section (items to rule out/symptoms to look for/keep points of the exam not to miss). Each item also has a "what not to do" list of procedures/medications/etc that should not be done with that pertaining illness/injury. It even describes how to perform minor procedures if you've never done them. It is a large, thick book but definitely a handy reference that sits by me on the desk. I highly recommend this resource as an additional tool to help you on your way, especially as a new grad!!! You won't regret it!! Definitely worth the money!!!

Best Tool for the Job
By Drew
I work as an Urgent Care PA and this is the best resource I have seen. It is definitely recommended.

It is not perfect. There is a lot I wish this covered. They don't cover pneumonia, for one thing. They could spend a LOT more space on radiology as many of the injuries I see are possible fractures. I think foot, ankle, knee, hand/wrist and chest xray should each have a little writeup and guide. They could include ICD 9 and 10 codes to help us document. If they are serious about tailoring it to Urgent Care, they could put in chapters on the requirements of Occ Med and various physical exams (sports, drivers license, CDL, firefighters). We also get our share of lacerations, and there should be a serious chapter on those. Procedures in general could be expanded and really help make this book even better.

But I've seen a couple other books like this and none stacked up. This is the best one resource out there.
