Great way to learn Santana tunes and licks

This is a great way to learn those Santana licks and to attempt to play as he plays. The backing tracks on the CD are very well made, using good musicians who all obviously have done their homework listening to the original Santana recordings. Having picked up a Mesa Flux Drive sustain pedal (since I can't afford a Mesa amplifier like Santana himself plays through) I bought this book to try to get closer to playing like he does (which of course I never will).

About the Author

Jeff Doyle, CCIE No. 1919, is vice president of research at Fishtech Labs. Specializing in IP routing protocols, SDN/NFV, data center fabrics, MPLS, and IPv6, Jeff has designed or assisted in the design of large-scale IP service provider and enterprise networks in 26 countries over 6 continents. He worked with early IPv6 adopters in Japan, China, and South Korea, and has advised service providers, government agencies, military contractors, equipment manufacturers, and large enterprises on best-practice IPv6 deployment. He now advises large enterprises on evolving data center infrastructures, SDN, and SD-WAN.

Jeff is the author of CCIE Professional Development: Routing TCP/IP, Volumes I and II and OSPF and IS-IS: Choosing an IGP for Large-Scale Networks; a co-author of Software Defined Networking: Anatomy of OpenFlow; and an editor and contributing author of Juniper Networks Routers: The Complete Reference. About the Author
Arnold J. Goldman is an attorney with the firm of Goldman and Goldman, in Rochester, New York. In addition to practicing law, he has taught courses in constitutional law at the University of Rochester and has been a guest lecturer in several schools in the Rochester area.

William D. Sigismond is Director of Experiential and Adult Learning and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Business Administration at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York. He has taught business law at both the high school and college levels for over 35 years and is a member and past president of the New York State Business Educator's Association, as well as a member of many other professional organizations. A certified arbitrator, he has handled a range of cases for the American Arbitration Association and the Better Business Bureau.

Business law book not good shape

Not in a good shape. Looks like some water damage. Writing in book makes hard to read the sentence it covers. Food pieces on some pages. It will do but could have been in better shape

If you have to buy this for a class, I hope your teacher is really good

I can't believe I had to buy this new edition for the second half of my business law class. Not only were there typos and errors everywhere, some of the actual material was wrong. It is poorly organized, poorly edited and too dumbed down. If this is your assigned book, petition to have a different text selected for your class. Thank goodness I had an excellent professor.

Questions at the end of chapter is a bit stupid since I ran into questions that are not covered that particular chapter, good thing those are "opinion" questions, and there's always google to get you out of a jam. Soft cover... books are so floppy..... All key terms are defined for you on the side. Makes studying a lot easier.

She explores how first-person or third-person narration really affects a film, in terms of genre conventions, viewer identification, time and nostalgia, subjectivity, and reliability. In conclusion she argues that voice-over increases film's potential for intimacy and sophisticated irony.

Beyond Sexuality points contemporary sexual politics in a radically new direction. Combining a psychoanalytic emphasis on the unconscious with a deep respect for the historical variability of sexual identities, this original work of queer theory makes the case for viewing erotic desire as fundamentally impersonal. Tim Dean develops a reading of Jacques Lacan that—rather than straightening out this notoriously difficult French psychoanalyst—brings out the queer tensions and productive incoherencies in his account of desire.

Dean shows how the Lacanian unconscious "deheterosexualizes" desire, and along the way he reveals how psychoanalytic thinkers as well as queer theorists have failed to exploit the full potential of this conception of desire. The book elaborates this by investigating social fantasies about homosexuality and AIDS, including gay men's own fantasies about sex and promiscuity, in an attempt to illuminate the challenges facing safe-sex education. Taking on many shibboleths in contemporary psychoanalysis and queer theory—and taking no prisoners—Beyond Sexuality offers an antidote to hagiographical strains in recent work on psychoanalysis, Foucault, and sexuality.

Tim Dean teaches in the Department of English and the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is author of Gary Snyder and the American Unconscious: Inhabiting the Ground.

Psychoanalysis and Queer Theory

This is perhaps my favorite work in the growing corpus of queer theory. While much of the discipline has become sedimentations of regurgitated contentions about 'culturally constructed subjectivities,' Dean argues clearly and convincingly for a social theory which does not reduce desire to historical variability. Desire, he reminds us, is the failure of discourse, not its unequivocal success. With this as his starting place, Dean suggests that what we locate in psychoanalysis is neither some return to an isolated self independent from a social or linguistic context nor a culturally-formed subjectivity reducible to that context. Reading desire as fundamentally recalcitrant to social discourses that are always trying to grasp it, it emerges in his work as inherently disruptive or transgressive, as necessarily queer. Whether he is working with Freud's concept of the death drive as an explication of contemporary social responses to AIDS, elucidating Lacan's 'object a' as the inevitable interlinking of the desirable with the abject, or demonstrating why a model of the unconscious is necessary for grasping the fantasies that undergird our culture's ideas about gay men, Dean cogently argues for the rich potential that psychoanalysis contributes to our understanding of sexuality and society.

Enjoyable and moderately accessible, the book opens a lot of possibilities for those interested in loving literature "in exactly the same way that others love sex." Some background in psychoanalysis is probably helpful.

The Monocle life and those who aspire to it

Monocle magazine and its founding editor Tyler Brûlé receive their fair, or more than their fair, share of criticism and parody. But Monocle has also been described as feeling like a club -- a self-selected fraternity of readers who share the editors' essential view across a range of topics, including urbanism, craftsmanship, customer service, printed media, Scandinavian electro-pop, and the value of a good flat white. For members of the club, "The Monocle Guide to Better Living" will be familiar but still very-nearly-essential, reading.

I say "familiar" because parts of this book are indeed adapted from the magazine. The initial section, "Ten Cities to Call Home," for instance, obviously draws from the annual Most Livable Cities list, while the last major section, "Going Places: Travel Top 50," also relies heavily on another annual list. Other articles and photos are recognizable too.

With reference to a previous reviewer, though, this book is definitely not a "greatest hits" collection with nothing new for the long-time reader. I applied the scientific method, opening the book at random and searching for the article and subject revealed on the Monocle website (disclosure: I'm a subscriber, and so have access to the magazine's full online archive). Of the twenty articles thus chosen, fifteen were clearly new material or, at any rate, new reporting on subjects the magazine had covered before. Four were obviously recycled (not that there's anything wrong with that), and one I classified as "kinda new," since it was a print adaptation of a Monocle Films video. Whether that ratio is worth the money is for the individual customer to decide.

As a dues-paying member of the club, one of the parts of the "Monocle Guide" I found most interesting was the photo essay at the end about the Monocle shops, café, and inside the St. Peter's -- or maybe Skull and Bones Hall -- of Monocledom, Midori House itself. Many Monocle staffers are also pictured, almost uniformly young and stylish. I also noticed that very few of them are wearing glasses or otherwise suggesting presbyopia may be a problem, which brings me to my major criticism of the "Monocle Guide." Despite the magazine's philosophical devotion to print, the Monocle and/or gestalten designers' treatment of it isn't very friendly. Captions and other material are in tiny, tiny type, while in certain essays, the closing list of key points or suggestions are printed in minuscule red type on a pink page! For a book hefty enough that it should come with its own dictionary stand (no doubt produced by Monocle in collaboration with Akiyama Mokkou [pp 172-173] or Young & Norgate [pp 138-139] and available for purchase in a Monocle Shop nowhere near you), holding the page to the light trying to find an angle where it's legible becomes a strain. Apart from that, though, anyone who understands and appreciates Monocle will find a cozy welcome here, too.

Pretty pictures, but not much more.

I bought this hoping for a pretty book with some good advice. I got a pretty book. 90% of this book is pictures. Some are lovely, some are boring. But this is really a book about design. For example, the the section on "Wardrobe Essentials" is nine, full-page pictures of clothing that is interesting from a design perspective, yet anything but essential. Contrary to the title, there's not much advice on how to live better.

Good but not great

Its a good entertaining read but clearly repackaging magazine articles in a book format. While it comes across as very international in scope, it is still rather provincial, focusing more on Japan than the rest of Asia and oddly has a strong fondness of Mallorca.
