Dwight Hobbes, Minnesota's most widely published essayist, has written for Essence, Reader's Digest and Washington Post. He currently contributes to Mpls/St. Paul Magazine, MN Spokesman-Recorder and Twin Cities Daily Planet. Hobbes has written for San Diego-Union Tribune, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, St. Paul Pioneer Press, City Pages, Twin Cities Reader, Insight News, The Circle, Asian American Press, Asian Pages, Colors: a Journal of Opinion by Writers of Color, St. Paul Almanac, Employment Weekly and more. Hobbes' collection of controversial essays, Something I Said is published by Papyrus Press, Inc. He's made guest appearances on National Public Radio, Minnesota Public Radio and Twin Cities Public Television. Hobbes' produced plays are Shelter (Pangea World Theater), Dues (Mixed Blood Theatre), You Can't Always Sometimes Never Tell (Long Island University) and In The Midst (Long Island University). Robinson, a one-act drama based on the life and career of Jackie Robinson was commissioned by the African American Museum and Cultural Center. You Can't Always Sometimes Never Tell is published in Center Stage (Illini Press, 3rd Edition). Dues is published in Point of Revue (Playscripts, Inc.) As a singer-songwriter, he's performed in the New York City area at Kenny's Castaways, The Other End, My Father's Place, New Moon Cafe and campus coffee houses at SUNY @ Stony Brook and Long Island University/C.W. With snappy dialogue, plenty of humor, and characters that jump off the page, Dwight Hobbes deftly paints a realistic portrait of a modern romance and all the joy and heartache that goes along with it. When New York based musician Keith meets librarian Lesli at a party in LA, sparks fly. Soon the two are involved in a long distance relationship. Though their attraction is intense, and Keith quickly realizes Lesli is like no other woman he’s ever known, their relationship is not a smooth one, even after Lesli moves across the country to take a job in New York. Hobbes does a great job of creating two flawed individuals who despite their passion and love for each other can’t quite make it work. Between quirky Lesli’s volatile temper, and laidback Keith’s reluctance to take things to the next level after almost two years of dating, the relationship inevitably comes to an end. Lesli is heartbroken while Keith is left wondering how it all went wrong. Unlike most romances that are told from a strictly female perspective, Black & Singles Blues is told through Keith’s uniquely male perspective, which makes for a refreshing change. As a result, readers will be anxiously flipping the pages to see if Keith and Lesli can overcome their issues and find a way back to each other. Hobbes is a hell of a writer and a talent to watch.

Black & Single Blues is the story of world class musician Keith Jackson and his tumultuous relationship with a woman named Lesli. Mr. Hobbes is a wonderfully talented author and fills the page with his charm and wit as he tells Keith and Lesli's story. The novel is from Keith's point of view and it's definitely interesting to see things through his eyes. One of my favorite scenes was in the very beginning where he first meets Lesli at a party and he tries to help her stand up. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Hobbes' work.
