The human mind is afflicted with a disease called fear--a chronic vigilance about being hurt that causes negative behaviors. The author says that awareness, freedom, and love are the essence of who we really are, and are central to the Toltec tradition, which was practiced in southern Mexico by ancient artists and scientists. There are both mental health and spiritual aspects to these teachings, which emphasize the ways we distort life's potentials and diminish our own power. Though Ruiz is an excellent and compact writer, his message of opportunity falls short of inspiring in this recording by two otherwise talented actors. If I could give this book a thousand stars . . I would. Read The Four Agreements by the same author first. You won't regret it. then delve into this one. I was surprised because I learned so much more about my SELF than I thought I would reading this book, I thought it was mostly about relationships. However silly me. I didn't realize going into it that I am one half of any relationship . . and the only half I can control! so of course this book would focus on practical steps that you, the reader can take yourself while teaching more about relationships in general. Everyone on the planet deserves to read this book.

This book is just amazing! Very easy reading even for me whos first language is not English. I would recomend this book for everybody. I think what the author is talking about in this book are just basic knowledge of life!

THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIREMENT TO READ.

I absolutely love this book and the metaphors or parables the author uses to explain his point. He is very down to earth and speaks in plain english, easy to comprehend and makes you rethink how we humans perceive ourselves and the world around us. I would recommend this book to everyone I know, but I definitely recommend this book to ANYONE who has gone thru a breakup or struggling with any type of relationship; be it signifant other, platonic friend, family, mom, dad, brother, sister, children, bosses. I could read this book over and over and over again. No problems!
